An isoelectronic and isostructural series of cyclometalated azido complexes [M(N)(dpb)] with M = Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II), and Au(III) based on the N^C^N pincer ligand 1,3-di(2-pyridyl)phenide (dpb) was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and investigated for reactivity in the iClick reaction with a wide range of internal and terminal alkynes by using H and F NMR spectroscopy. Reaction rate constants were found to increase with greater charge density in the order Ni(II) > Pd(II) > Pt(II) > Au(III). Terminal alkynes R-C≡C-R' with strongly electron-withdrawing groups R and R' exhibited faster kinetics than those with electron-donating substituents in the order CF > ketone > ester > H > phenyl ≫ amide, while R = CH resulted in complete loss of reactivity.

Sensory photoreceptors abound in nature and enable organisms to adapt behavior, development, and physiology to environmental light. In optogenetics, photoreceptors allow spatiotemporally precise, reversible, and non-invasive control by light of cellular processes. Notwithstanding the development of numerous optogenetic circuits, an unmet demand exists for efficient systems sensitive to red light, given its superior penetration of biological tissue.

Chater & Loewenstein argue that i-frame research has been coopted by private interests opposed to system-level reform, leading to ineffective interventions. They recommend that behavioural scientists refocus on system-level interventions. We suggest that the influence of private interests on research is problematic for wider normative and epistemic reasons.

This article understands the reception of Soviet psychology in the Federal Republic of Germany as a contribution to a transnational Soviet psychology that is closely linked to a "Western Communist culture," broadly understood, and further elaborates on this term, which is borrowed from Luciano Nicolás García. Critical Psychology () was developed at the Free University of Berlin starting in the late 1960s by the Marxist psychologist Klaus Holzkamp and others and represents a central focus of this form of appropriating the writings of Soviet psychologists. However, there has also been intense interest in Soviet psychology in West Germany beyond this Communist culture.

Background: The main framework conditions for palliative care are set at the regional level. The scope of the forms of care used (outpatient, inpatient, general, specialized) varies widely. What is the quality of outcomes achieved by the palliative care provided on a federal states level? What are the associated costs of care?
Method: Retrospective observational study using BARMER claims data from 145,372 individuals who died between 2016 and 2019 and had palliative care in the last year of life.

A promising strategy for developing novel therapies against tropical diseases, including malaria, leishmaniasis, and trypanosomiasis, is to detect biological targets such as trypanothione reductase, a vital parasite enzyme that regulates oxidative stress. This enzyme is highly selective and conserved in the Trypanosotidae family and has an ortholog in the Plasmodium genus. Previous studies have established that an isosteric replacement of naphthoquinone's carbonyl group with a sulfone group leads to compounds with high bioactivity and selectivity (half-maximal inhibitory concentration = 3 μM against intracellular amastigotes of , selectivity index = 153 over monocytes U-937).

Liquid structure carries deep imprints of an inherent thermal invariance against a spatial transformation of the underlying classical many-body Hamiltonian. At first order in the transformation field Noether's theorem yields the local force balance. Three distinct two-body correlation functions emerge at second order, namely the standard two-body density, the localized force-force correlation function, and the localized force gradient.

Preliminary analyses of asteroid Ryugu samples show kinship to aqueously altered CI (Ivuna-type) chondrites, suggesting similar origins. We report identification of C-rich, particularly primitive clasts in Ryugu samples that contain preserved presolar silicate grains and exceptional abundances of presolar SiC and isotopically anomalous organic matter. The high presolar silicate abundance (104 ppm) indicates that the clast escaped extensive alteration.

We show in detail how three one-body fluctuation profiles, namely the local compressibility, the local thermal susceptibility, and the reduced density, can be obtained from a statistical mechanical many-body description of classical particle-based systems. We present several different and equivalent routes to the definition of each fluctuation profile, facilitating their explicit numerical calculation in inhomogeneous equilibrium systems. This underlying framework is used for the derivation of further properties such as hard wall contact theorems and novel types of inhomogeneous one-body Ornstein-Zernike equations.

A viscosity jump of one to two orders of magnitude in the lower mantle of Earth at 800-1,200-km depth is inferred from geoid inversions and slab-subducting speeds. This jump is known as the mid-mantle viscosity jump. The mid-mantle viscosity jump is a key component of lower-mantle dynamics and evolution because it decelerates slab subduction, accelerates plume ascent and inhibits chemical mixing.

A series of 1H-indeno[2',1':5,6]dihydropyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine and 1H-indeno[2',1':5,6]pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives was prepared and screened for antiparasitic and viral RNase H inhibitory activity. Several compounds showed considerable activity against Toxoplasma gondii parasites and Leishmania major amastigotes, which warrants further investigation. Based on the structural similarities of certain derivatives with common viral RNase H inhibitors, a HIV-1 RNase H assay was used to study the RNase H inhibition by selected test compounds.

To ameliorate these effects, nitrogen-fixing (N-fixing) trees are frequently used in the reforestation of degraded landscapes, especially in the tropics; however, their influence on ecosystem properties such as nitrogen (N) availability and carbon (C) stocks are understudied. Here, we use a 30-y old reforestation site of outplanted native N-fixing trees () dominated by exotic grass understory, and a neighboring remnant forest dominated by canopy trees and native understory, to assess whether restoration is leading to similar N and C biogeochemical landscapes and soil and plant properties as a target remnant forest ecosystem.

Layered nanoparticles with surface charge are explored as rheological modifiers for extrudable materials, utilizing their ability to induce electrostatic repulsion and create a house-of-cards structure. These nanoparticles provide mechanical support to the polymer matrix, resulting in increased viscosity and storage modulus. Moreover, their advantageous aspect ratio allows for shear-induced orientation and decreased viscosity during flow.

Cyclic di-GMP signaling regulates sessile-to-motile lifestyle transition and associated physiological and metabolic features in bacteria. The presence of potential cyclic di-GMP turnover proteins in deepest branching bacteria indicates that cyclic di-GMP is an ancient signaling molecule. In this issue of The EMBO Journal, Cai et al (2023) describe light-induced activation of a thiosulfate oxidation pathway in the deep-sea cold-seep bacterium Qipengyuania flava, thus coupling cyclic di-GMP with the regulation of the global abiotic sulfur cycle.
