Development of an automated artificial intelligence-based system for urogenital schistosomiasis diagnosis using digital image analysis techniques and a robotized microscope.

Background: Urogenital schistosomiasis is considered a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) by the World Health Organization (WHO). It is estimated to affect 150 million people worldwide, with a high relevance in resource-poor settings of the African continent. The gold-standard diagnosis is still direct observation of Schistosoma haematobium eggs in urine samples by optical microscopy.

Multidisciplinary care in nonmalignant central airway obstruction.

Purpose Of Review: The management of histologically benign central airway obstruction (CAO) is complex. Published studies have focused on the diagnostic approaches and therapeutic options provided by specific specialties, but there has been no focus on multidisciplinary management of this disease. Our objective is to review the current diagnostic and therapeutic modalities available for managing nonmalignant CAO from a multidisciplinary perspective involving otolaryngology, thoracic surgery and interventional bronchoscopists.

Thus, research on alternatives is needed to maintain productivity, sustainability, and animal health. To gain a comprehensive understanding of probiotics' modes of action on performance, intestinal microbiota, and gut health in poultry, 3 probiotic strains (Enterococcus faecalis CV1028 [EntF], Bacteroides fragilis GP1764 [BacF], and Ligilactobacillus salivarius CTC2197 [LacS]) were tested in 2 in vivo trials.

Behaviour therapy for obesity in older adults.

Obesity presents a significant public health challenge, with a growing prevalence among older adults and addressing obesity in older adults presents unique challenges. Behaviour therapy is a cornerstone in obesity management, yet its application in older populations, is underexplored. This narrative review, based on the current literature, examines the role of behavioural change techniques (BCTs) in addressing obesity in older adults, highlighting the need for tailored interventions that consider age-related challenges.

The ageing of people living with cystic fibrosis: what to expect now?

The prognosis of people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) has improved dramatically with the introduction of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators (CFTRm). The ageing of the cystic fibrosis (CF) population is changing the disease landscape with the emergence of different needs and increasing comorbidities related to both age and long-term exposure to multiple treatments including CFTRm. Although the number of pwCF eligible for this treatment is expected to increase, major disparities in care and outcomes still exist in this population.

Introduction: Ankle fractures are increasingly common in frail patients, with hospitalization being the principal cost driver, particularly for the elderly who often need referral to nursing facilities. Effect of Moderate Beer Intake on the Lipid Composition of Human Red Blood Cell Membranes.

: Growing evidence suggests that erythrocyte membrane lipids are subject to changes during their lifespan. Factors such as the type of dietary intake and its composition contribute to the changes in red blood cell (RBC) membranes. Due to the high antioxidant content of beer, we aimed to investigate the effect of moderate beer consumption on the lipid composition of RBCs membranes from healthy overweight individuals.

Clinical and Serological Profiles in Cryoglobulinemia: Analysis of Isotypes and Etiologies.

: Cryoglobulinemia (CG) is marked by abnormal immunoglobulins (Ig) in serum, precipitating at temperatures below 37 °C. Current classification categorizes CG into three subtypes (types I, II, and III) based on Ig clonality. The features distinguishing patients with CG based on their etiology remain unidentified.

Occupational Exposures, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Tomographic Findings in the Spanish Population.

Self-reported occupational exposure was previously associated with COPD in the Spanish population. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between occupational exposure to various chemical and biological agents, COPD, emphysema, and the bronchial wall area, which was determined by lung computed tomography (CT) in 226 individuals with COPD and 300 individuals without COPD. Lifetime occupational exposures were assessed using the ALOHA(+) job exposure matrix, and CT and spirometry were also performed.

BioMOF@cellulose Glycerogel Scaffold with Multifold Bioactivity: Perspective in Bone Tissue Repair.

The development of new biomaterials for musculoskeletal tissue repair is currently an important branch in biomedicine research. The approach presented here is centered around the development of a prototypic synthetic glycerogel scaffold for bone regeneration, which simultaneously features therapeutic activity. The main novelty of this work lies in the combination of an open meso and macroporous nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC)-based glycerogel with a fully biocompatible microporous bioMOF system (CaSyr-1) composed of calcium ions and syringic acid.

Synaptic and extrasynaptic distribution of NMDA receptors in the cortex of Alzheimer's disease patients.

Background: Synaptic and extrasynaptic distribution of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) has not been addressed in the brain from Alzheimer´s disease (AD) subjects, despite their contribution to neurodegeneration.

Methods: We have developed a protocol to isolate synaptic and extrasynaptic membranes from controls and AD frontal cortex. We characterized the distribution of the NMDAR subunits GluN2B, GluN2A, GluN1, and GluN3A, as well as post-translational modifications, such as phosphorylation and glycosylation.

Interlaboratory comparison of endotoxin contamination assessment of nanomaterials.

Endotoxin contamination is a significant hurdle to the translation of nanomaterials for biomedical applications. Multiple reports now describe that more than one-third of nanomaterials fail early pre-clinical assessment due to levels of endotoxin above regulatory requirements. Additionally, most immunological studies or studies testing nanomaterials in the literature lack inclusion of this assessment, which may lead to false-positive or false-negative results if high levels of the contaminant are present.

Late spring frosts, occurring after spring phenological events, pose a dire threat to tree growth and forest productivity. With climate warming, earlier spring phenological events have become increasingly common and led to plants experiencing more frequent and severe frost damage. However, the effect of late spring frosts after leaf-out on subsequent flowering phenology in woody species remains unknown.

Environmental and Health Sustainability of the Mediterranean Diet: A Systematic Review.

The Mediterranean diet (MD) has been shown to be a healthy dietary pattern (DP), and lately it is increasingly being studied as a sustainable DP. The aim of this study is to analyze whether the MD is a sustainable and healthy DP accounting for its carbon footprint, water footprint (WF), land use (LU), and/or energy use, based on the existing scientific literature. We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022309916).

Efficacy of Food Industry By-Product β-Glucan/Chitin-Chitosan on Lipid Profile of Overweight and Obese Individuals: Sustainability and Nutraceuticals.

Fat-binding nutraceutical supplements have gained considerable attention as potential cholesterol-lowering strategies to address dyslipidemia in overweight and obese individuals. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a polysaccharide-rich compound containing β-glucan/chitin-chitosan (βGluCnCs) on lipid profiles and lipoprotein function. In a prospective, two-arm clinical trial, 58 overweight and obese individuals were randomized to receive either 3 g/day of βGluCnCs or a placebo (microcrystalline cellulose) for 12 weeks.
