An ascending aortic aneurysm is an often asymptomatic localized dilatation of the aorta. Aortic rupture is a life-threatening event that occurs when the stress on the aortic wall exceeds its mechanical strength. Therefore, patient-specific finite element models could play an important role in estimating the risk of rupture.

Background: Following acute and sub-acute rehabilitation from severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), minimal to no efficacious interventions to treat ongoing cognitive deficits are available. Aerobic exercise is a non-invasive behavioral intervention with promise to treat cognitive deficits in TBI populations.
Methods: Six individuals, aged 24-62 years, with chronic (> 8 months since injury) severe (Glasgow Coma Scale of 3-8) TBI were recruited from two outpatient rehabilitation centers.

Bridging therapy (BT) after leukapheresis is required in most relapsed/refractory (R/R) large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) patients receiving chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells. Bendamustine-containing regimens are a potential BT option. We aimed to assess if this agent had a negative impact on CAR-T outcomes when it was administered as BT.

Yet, the facilitative interactions among symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, rhizobia, and heterotrophic bacteria, which underpin multiple functions in eroded ecosystems, remain unclear. Here, we utilized quantitative microbiota profiling and ecological network analyses to explore the interplay between the diversity and biotic associations of root-associated microbiota and multifunctionality across an eroded slope of a plantation on the Loess Plateau.

Safe and effective severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines are crucial to fight against the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Most vaccines are based on a mutated version of the Spike glycoprotein [K986P/V987P (S-2P)] with improved stability, yield and immunogenicity. However, S-2P is still produced at low levels.

Context: It is hypothesized that gut dysbiosis, a typical feature of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), could be involved in the origin of this neurodevelopmental disorder. Therefore, the use of probiotics to restore gastrointestinal (GI) equilibrium might be a promising therapeutic strategy due to its capacity to balance the gut-brain axis and behavioral responses.
Objective: To summarize current knowledge on the use of probiotics to treat core clinical ASD symptoms and concomitant GI signs, compare the design of published studies with those of ongoing trials, assess the near future of this field, and provide recommendations for improving novel studies.

Background: The impact of vitamin D supplementation on cardiovascular outcomes and mortality risk reduction remains unclear due to conflicting study findings.
Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), published between 1983 and 2022, that reported the effect of vitamin D supplementation in adults versus placebo or no treatment on all-cause mortality (ACM), cardiovascular mortality (CVM), non-cardiovascular mortality (non-CVM), and cardiovascular morbidities. Only studies with a follow-up period longer than one year were included.

Introduction: Mass burn casualty disasters present with a big challenge due to the complex multidisciplinary management of severely burned patients and the limited capacity of the specialized centers. Literature is scarce, and so is the management of these disasters with enzymatic debridement (ED).
Methods: Retrospective observational analysis of nine patients admitted to the Vall d'Hebron University Hospital Burn Center (Barcelona, Spain), as a consequence of a bell tower explosion on December 30, 2019.

Primary productivity in the ocean plays a major role in the global carbon cycle. To estimate its changes through geological time, different sedimentary proxies are used. However, the relative weights of the various processes driving the sedimentary accumulation of organic matter are not fully constrained or represent the flux of specific algal classes.

In particular, we show that such mappings are homeomorphisms when or when the branch set is empty. This gives a positive answer to the corresponding cases of a question of Vuorinen.

It has been a cluster of factors that have been crossed by biological, socioeconomic and cultural phenomena, interconnected with each other, and that have become structural. Despite the broad contribution of the scientific field to the study of this phenomenon, the different disciplines in general, and those from the Social Sciences in particular, have had little participation and opportunities for communication and research.

Precise patterning of 2D materials into micro- and nanostructures presents a considerable challenge and many efforts are dedicated to the development of processes alternative to the standard lithography. In this work we show a fabrication technique based on direct electron beam lithography (EBL) on MoS on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates. This easy and fast method takes advantage of the interaction of the electron beam with the PDMS, which at high enough doses leads to cross-linking and shrinking of the polymer.

However, given that changes in the brain that lead to cognitive decline begin decades before the onset of symptoms, understanding the mechanisms by which modifiable cardiovascular factors are associated with brain health in midlife is critical and can lead to the development of strategies to promote and maintain brain health as we age. Methods and Results In 501 middle-aged (aged 40-65 years) adult participants of the BBHI (Barcelona Brain Health Initiative), we found differential associations among cardiorespiratory fitness, cardiovascular risk, and cognition and cortical thickness.

The tensor fascia lata is a muscular structure that forms part of the lateral portion of the pelvis and proximal thigh. Because conditions affecting this muscle have not been widely reported and are relatively unknown, hypertrophy and pseudo-hypertrophy of the tensor fascia lata, although relatively common imaging findings, often go undiagnosed; instead, radiologists perform the differential diagnosis with more complex and more dangerous conditions. This article aims to review the anatomic and functional characteristics of the tensor fascia lata, going into detail about the radiological description of this muscle and pathological conditions that can affect it, as well as reviewing the relevant literature.

Delivery of adequate nutrition after liver transplantation (LT) surgery is an important goal of postoperative care. Existing guidelines recommend early enteral nutrition after abdominal surgery and in the child who is critically ill but data on nutritional interventions after LT in children are sparse. We evaluated the impact of a standardized postoperative feeding protocol on enteral nutrition delivery in children after LT.

Natural Killer T (NKT) cells play an important role in the immune response and can be activated by glycolipids presented by CD1d protein. We present MCS-0208, an unprecedented arylthioether-phytoceramide able to induce potent invariant NKT (iNKT) cell activation, notably when tested in human iNKT cells. This arylsphingolipid analog has a simple phenyl group containing a single hydroxyl substituent as a surrogate of the sugar ring.

Low-frequency noise (LFN) variability in graphene transistors (GFETs) is for the first time researched in this work under both experimental and theoretical aspects. LFN from an adequate statistical sample of long-channel solution-gated single-layer GFETs is measured in a wide range of operating conditions while a physics-based analytical model is derived that accounts for the bias dependence of LFN variance with remarkable performance. LFN deviations in GFETs stem from the variations of the parameters of the physical mechanisms that generate LFN, which are the number of traps ( ) for the carrier number fluctuation effect (Δ) due to trapping/detrapping process and the Hooge parameter ( ) for the mobility fluctuations effect (Δ).

The experience gained as a center attached to the Catalan Network of Smokeless Hospitals since 2002 shows that preventing and controlling smoking requires a specific agenda developed by a competent committee comprising workers from all hospital areas. Likewise, coordination with other centers in the network is essential as it permits the sharing of experiences.
