Despite the emergence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARBs), how biological inter-trophic interactions, modulated by watershed urbanization, shape the resistome remains unexplored. We collected water samples from the highly urbanized (western: 65 % built land, sewage-affected) and lesser-urbanized (northern: 25 % built land, drinking water source) downstream tributaries of the Jiulong River in southeast China over dry and wet seasons. We utilized metagenomic and amplicon (16S and 18S rDNA) sequencing to investigate the relationships among microeukaryotic algae, consumer protists, bacterial communities, and the resistome.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are emerging contaminants of significant concern due to their role in facilitating the spread of antibiotic resistance, especially high-risk ARGs, which are characterized by high human accessibility, gene mobility, pathogenicity, and clinical availability. Studies have shown that cross-domain interactions, such as those between consumer protists (consumers) and bacteria, can influence bacterial diversity, distribution, and function through top-down control. The consumers-bacteria interactions may also affect the occurrence and distribution of ARGs, yet this has been scarcely explored in field investigations.

This research delves into the complex factors that affect how ready a community is to embrace new environmental development strategies, which could significantly change the region's social and economic fabric. Using a structured questionnaire, exploratory factor analysis and logistic regression analysis, the study assesses how corporate practices in resource management, environmental governance, efforts to enhance community capabilities, and various demographic factors influence the community's willingness to adapt to change. Despite its intentions to benefit both the mining operations and the community, corporate resource management appears to have a paradoxical impact on the community's willingness to pursue new environmental paths.

Parallel cascade selection molecular dynamics (PaCS-MD) is an enhanced conformational sampling method conducted as a "repetition of time leaps in parallel worlds", comprising cycles of multiple molecular dynamics (MD) simulations performed in parallel and selection of the initial structures of MDs for the next cycle. We developed PaCS-Toolkit, an optimized software utility enabling the use of different MD software and trajectory analysis tools to facilitate the execution of the PaCS-MD simulation and analyze the obtained trajectories, including the preparation for the subsequent construction of the Markov state model. PaCS-Toolkit is coded with Python, is compatible with various computing environments, and allows for easy customization by editing the configuration file and specifying the MD software and analysis tools to be used.

This work reports on the design and synthesis of an angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) functionalized magnetic fluorescent silica nanoparticles (Fe-FSNP) as a biosensing platform to detect severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antigen. Iron oxide (FeO) nanoparticles were synthesized via ultrasonic-assisted coprecipitation and then coated with fluorescent silica nanoparticles (FSNP) through themethod forming the Fe-FSNP samples. Silica obtained from local geothermal powerplant was used in this work and Rhodamine B was chosen as the incorporated fluorescent dye, hence this reports for the first time ACE-2 was immobilized on the natural silica surface.

The conformational dynamics of lipase B (CALB) was investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, parallel cascade selection MD (PaCS-MD), and the Markov state model (MSM) and mainly focused on the lid-opening motion closely related to substrate binding. All-atom MD simulation of CALB was conducted in water and on the interface of water and tricaprylin. Increased urbanization and anthropogenic activities can alter dissolved organic matter (DOM) and complicate its interaction with bacteria in rivers' ecosystems, however, there is limited information about how bacterial communities respond to DOM components in rivers with different urbanization levels. Here, we combined spectroscopy-based DOM analysis and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to investigate the associations of bacterial taxa and DOM properties as well as the impacts of DOM on bacterial niche breadth in North River (NR) and West River (WR) of Jiulong River watershed, southern China, which had low and high urbanization levels, respectively. Spectroscopy analysis showed that hydrophilic DOM was predominant in both rivers whereas chromophoric DOM was higher in WR.
