Microcystins are generated by diverse cyanobacteria in shrimp ponds marked by high nutrient levels. The study examined microcystin-leucine arginine (MC-LR) in the pond water, gills, hepatopancreas, and muscle of shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) from shrimp ponds on the northern coast of East Java and its effects on their histological structures. In shrimp ponds dominated by cyanobacteria particularly Microcystis and Oscillatoria, MC-LR levels were high.

This study investigates the factors associated with stunting prevalence in Indonesia, utilizing a generalized lasso framework with modified penalty matrices to accommodate spatio-temporal data structures. Novel approaches are introduced to construct the penalty matrices, with particular focus on defining neighborhood structures. The proposed method is applied to data from 34 Indonesian provinces, covering the years 2019 to 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • Aluminum is a common metal that is generally safe but can become toxic in high levels, harming organs like the kidneys and liver.
  • A study tested the protective effects of resveratrol-tempeh on aluminum-induced toxicity in mice, analyzing damage to the liver and kidneys after exposure.
  • Results indicated that aluminum caused significant organ damage, while resveratrol showed potential in reducing oxidative stress, suggesting it could help repair aluminum-induced liver and kidney damage.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study analyzed 750 models, finding that the Bayesian localised CAR model with three covariates was the most effective, linking poverty and low birth weight to higher stunting risks, while diverse child diets reduce these risks.
  • * Sulawesi Barat Province was identified as having the highest stunting risk, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions in high-stunting areas to address poverty, low birth weight, and improve child diet diversity.

Nicotine acts as an angiogenic factor by stimulating endogenous cholinergic pathways. Several subtypes of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) have been demonstrated to be closely correlated to the formation and progression of different types of cancers. Recently, several studies have found that nicotinic acetylcholine receptors α9 (α9-nAChRs) are highly expressed in breast tumors, especially in tumors derived from patients diagnosed at advanced stages.

Natural occurring peroxides are interesting bioprospecting targets due to their molecular structural diversity and the wide range of pharmacological activities. In this systematic review, a total of 123 peroxide compounds were analysed from 99 published papers with the compounds distributed in 31 plants, 18 animals and 41 microorganisms living in land and water ecosystems. The peroxide moiety exists as both cyclic and acyclic entities and can include 1,2-dioxolanes, 1,2-dioxane rings and common secondary metabolites with a peroxo group.

A comprehensive study was undertaken to examine the contamination of spotted scat fish (Scatophagus argus) with microplastics (MP) in various locations along the East Java coast of Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to collect detailed information regarding the abundance, color, shape, size, type of polymer, and chemical components of the MP. The findings of this study indicated that MP exhibiting distinct attributes-including a specific fiber type, black coloration, and a size range of 1000- <5000 μm-was most abundant in the gill, stomach, and intestines of spotted scat fish of varying lengths.

The eastern coastline of Gresik, located in East Java, Indonesia, experienced significant industrialization, leading to the development of numerous diverse sectors. These diverse industrial activities, in addition to other human activities, result in the contamination of sediment across the eastern coast of Gresik with a variety of metals. Metals like arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) have exceeded the international standards for sediment quality, potentially causing significant harm to the aquatic ecosystem in this coastal region.

The massive industrial growth in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia has the potential to result in metal contamination in the nearby coastal waters. The purpose of this study was to analyze the metal concentrations in edible species from the Gresik coastal waters and evaluate the potential health risks linked to this metal contamination. Metal concentrations (Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, As, Cd, Ni, Hg, and Cr) in fish and shrimp samples mostly met the maximum limits established by national and international regulatory organizations.

Iron oxide/carbon-based nanocomposites are known as an ideal combination of magnetic-conductive materials that were recently developed in radar absorption application; one example is the FeO/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). In this study, we try to boost their radar absorption ability by Mn-ion doping. Mn is an appropriate Fe substitute that is predicted to alter the magnetic properties and enhance the conductivity, which are crucial to developing their radar absorption properties.
