Introduction: External fixators are the most common fixation method for fractures with substantial soft tissue compromise. Nonetheless, the frames used are bulky, uncomfortable, and cumbersome to patients. Using locking compression plate (LCP) as an external fixator (low profile external fixation/LPEF) owns the same properties as standard external fixators but may overcome disadvantages because of its low-profile frame.

Background: The treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) involves platinum-based chemotherapy. It is typically accompanied by chemoresistance resulting from antioxidant properties conferred by cancer stem cells (CSCs). Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) enhances CSCs and antioxidant properties in cancers, including NSCLC.

Introduction: and importance: A common gastrointestinal presentation of both COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is acute abdominal pain, which sometimes mimics appendicitis. Literature describing children with COVID-19 infection and concurrent acute appendicitis is growing, and understanding these patients' clinical picture is necessary for their proper treatment.

Case Presentation: We present a case series of six healthy children before they developed classic symptoms of appendicitis.

Predictor of Liver Biochemistry Improvement in Patients with Cytomegalovirus Cholestasis after Ganciclovir Treatment.

Pediatr Gastroenterol Hepatol Nutr

January 2022

Department of Child Health, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada/Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Purpose: Cholestasis resulting from cytomegalovirus (CMV)-induced hepatitis manifests in 40% of patients with a CMV infection. Ganciclovir treatment in children with CMV infections has proven to be highly effective. Until now, there are very few studies have identified predictive factors for liver biochemistry improvement after ganciclovir therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • * A case of a 4-year-old boy with typhoid fever presented symptoms of fever, decreased consciousness, and extensive bleeding, confirmed through diagnostic tests indicating DIC and sepsis.
  • * Although severe bleeding and DIC are uncommon in typhoid cases, this situation emphasizes the need for further research to understand the relationship between typhoid fever and these complications.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare form of chronic pyelonephritis, which is challenging to diagnose because its clinical presentation mimics other entities and is commonly associated with a history of urinary tract obstruction. We report a case of XGP in a young adult without nephrolithiasis and urinary tract obstruction. A 23-year-old woman presented with intermittent abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant persisting for the last ten months.

Background: Bacterial meningitis causes high mortality rates among children. Even with early diagnosis and prompt treatment, around 15% of patients die especially in the first and second days after diagnosis. The neutrophil lymphocyte ratio has been reported to be a predicting factor of severity and outcome for patients with pneumonia and sepsis.

Is the Infection of the SARS-CoV-2 Delta Variant Associated With the Outcomes of COVID-19 Patients?

Front Med (Lausanne)

December 2021

Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Article Synopsis
  • The Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 has caused a rise in COVID-19 infections globally, prompting a study in Yogyakarta and Central Java, Indonesia, comparing outcomes between patients infected with Delta and non-Delta variants.
  • The study analyzed 161 patients, revealing that those with the Delta variant were significantly younger on average (27.3 years) compared to those with non-Delta (43.0 years) and had lower cycle threshold (Ct) values, indicating higher viral loads.
  • While hospitalization and mortality rates were similar for both variants, factors such as age ≥65, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension were linked to higher mortality among COVID-19 patients.

Expression of mRNA vascular endothelial growth factor in hypospadias patients.

BMC Urol

November 2021

Division of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada/Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Background: Hypospadias is a relatively common genital anomaly in humans, usually followed by inelastic dartos that causes penile chordee. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is strongly linked to the viscoelasticity of tissues and their elastic phase. This study aimed to evaluate VEGF expressions in (1) fascia dartos between hypospadias and controls and (2) chordee severity.

Background: Studies to confirm the efficacy and safety of convalescent plasma (CP) as an adjunctive treatment for COVID-19 are still required especially for the countries where standard treatments are unevenly distributed.

Methods: A non-randomized comparative study was done from June - September 2020 in Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Due to the survival of preterm neonates being continually improved, the modifiable prognostic factors of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) are essential to be investigated and considered in making a suitable treatment to decrease the prevalence and effect of NEC. Many prognostic factors have been associated with the survival of neonates with NEC; however, the studies show conflicting results. Moreover, the study from developing countries regarding NEC outcomes is minimal.

The outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection is determined by multiple factors, including the viral, host genetics, age, and comorbidities. This study investigated the association between prognostic factors and disease outcomes of patients infected by SARS-CoV-2 with multiple S protein mutations. Fifty-one COVID-19 patients were recruited in this study.

Chronic wounds present a major disease burden in people with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB), an inherited blistering skin disorder caused by mutations in COL7A1 encoding type VII collagen, the major component of anchoring fibrils at the dermal-epidermal junction. Treatment of RDEB wounds is mostly symptomatic, and there is considerable unmet need in trying to improve and accelerate wound healing. In this study, we defined transcriptomic profiles and gene pathways in RDEB wounds and compared these to intact skin in RDEB and healthy control subjects.

Development of an experimental burn model is essential to studying burn wound pathophysiology and progressivity, and identifying the best therapeutic choice before treatment can be applied clinically. Pigs are preferred as animal models for burns because their skin structure and wound regeneration resemble that of humans. We made a novel model to create a deep dermal burn using prospective methods that are easy to use, safe, and consistently reproducible.

Background: ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) causes the release of soluble ST2 biomarkers at high level on acute phase. However, sST2 has never been used as adjunct biomarker in ESC/AHA guideline for STEMI. Furthermore, the specific onset that sST2 may have role in acute phase of STEMI related with infarct location has not been established.
