On the Role of a Polymer Matrix in Enhancing Energy Transfer Efficiency Using Coumarin 6 and Rhodamine B as Donor and Acceptor Pairs.

Chem Asian J

January 2025

Instituto de Ciencias Químicas, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Austral de Chile, Av. Rector Eduardo Morales 33, Valdivia, Chile.

This study investigates the critical role of polymer matrices in optimizing luminescence and energy transfer, utilizing the commercial dyes Coumarin 6 (C6) and Rhodamine B (RhB) as a donor-acceptor pair. Solution-phase experiments revealed a dependence of energy transfer efficiency on solvent dielectric constant. Furthermore, embedding the dyes within Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or Poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) matrices significantly enhance energy transfer due to increased molecular proximity.

Fungi associated with orange juice production and assessment of adhesion ability and resistance to sanitizers.

Int J Food Microbiol

December 2024

Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Faculty of Food Engineering, University of Campinas, Rua Monteiro Lobato, 80, Cidade Universitária Zeferino Vaz, 13083-862 Campinas, SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Orange juice is widely consumed worldwide due to its sensory and nutritional characteristics. This beverage is susceptible to contamination by acidic-tolerant microorganisms due to its low pH, especially filamentous fungi and yeasts. To minimize fungal spoilage, companies usually submit juice to thermal treatments; sanitizers are also applied on surfaces to maintain the microbiological quality.

The venom of Colombian specimens of the rear-fanged snake Pseudoboa neuwiedii contains proteolytic and phospholipase A (PLA) activities, but is devoid of esterases. Mass spectrometric analysis of electrophoretic bands indicated that this venom contains C-type lectins (CTL), cysteine-rich secretory proteins (CRiSP), PLA, snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMP), and snake venom matrix metalloproteinases (svMMP). In this investigation, we extended our characterization of P.

Department of Neurology, School of Medical Sciences, University of Campinas - UNICAMP, Rua Tessália Vieira de Camargo, 126. Cidade Universitária "Zeferino Vaz" Campinas, Campinas, SP, 13083-887, Brazil.

Friedreich's Ataxia (FRDA) is the most common autosomal recessive ataxia worldwide and is caused by biallelic unstable intronic GAA expansions at FXN. With its limited therapy and the recent approval of the first disease-modifying agent for FRDA, the search for biological markers is urgently needed to assist and ease the development of therapies. MiRNAs have emerged as promising biomarkers in various medical fields such as oncology, cardiology, epilepsy and neurology as well.

Parasite-Driven host manipulation: The case of trematodes in Neotropical tadpoles.

Int J Parasitol Parasites Wildl

December 2024

Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita, Filho", Instituto de Biociências, Letras e Ciências Exatas, Campus de São José do Rio Preto, Brazil.

Parasites can impact tadpole survival in both lethal and sublethal ways. Sublethal effects include alterations in morphology and behavior, reduced competitive ability, and increased vulnerability to predation, while lethal effects result in direct mortality. These impacts can have significant consequences at both individual and population levels, especially given that amphibians host various parasites and pathogens, which may contribute to population declines.

The continuous increase of water distribution networks (WDNs) in size and complexity poses significant management challenges, including a high risk of failures. Due to the intrinsic interconnected feature of water flow, including losses, this study proposes a methodology based on graph correlation and multilayer network analysis for leak detection and localization in WDNs with multiple components (infrastructure, control devices, hydraulic sensors). The detection process involves correlating monitored data to create a temporal graph and classify vertices.

Department of Neurology, Rua Tessalia Vieira de Camargo, Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), 126, Cidade Universitária Zeferino Vaz, Campinas 13083-970, Brazil.

Background: It is still unclear whether patients with progressive MS (PMS) present a distinct pattern of cognitive impairment (CI) and different trajectories of cognitive and clinical decline compared to patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) with similar age. In addition, the role of reserve (cognitive and cerebral) in cognitive decline in the different forms of MS is not fully understood, and some studies suggest that its effects reduce in the progressive forms.

Objective: To assess the trajectories of cognitive decline in RRMS and PMS patients with similar age, also evaluating the predictive power of baseline clinical and MRI features on cognitive outcomes at follow-up.

Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute, Centre for Metabolism, Obesity and Diabetes Research, McMaster University, 1200 Main Street West, Hamilton, ON L8N 3Z5, Canada.

Obesity is associated with compartmentalized changes in immune responses that can be protective or pathogenic. It has been proposed that obesity-related changes in the microbiota influence allergic lung inflammation. We hypothesized that sensors of the bacterial cell wall influenced allergenic lung inflammation during obesity.

We investigated the in vitro antibacterial activity of the combination rifampicin (RIF) + polymyxin B (PB) against extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates. We evaluated clinical isolates co-resistant to PB (non-mcr carriers; eptB, mgrB, pmr operon, and ramA mutations) and to carbapenems (KPC, CTX-M, and SHV producers; including KPC + NDM co-producer), belonging to sequence types (ST) ST16, ST11, ST258, ST340, and ST437. We used the standard broth microdilution method to determine RIF and PB minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the checkerboard assay to evaluate the fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) of RIF + PB as well as to investigate the lowest concentrations of RIF and PB that combined (RIF + PB) had antibacterial activity.
