To drive health innovation that meets the needs of all and democratize healthcare, there is a need to assess the generalization performance of deep learning (DL) algorithms across various distribution shifts to ensure that these algorithms are robust. This retrospective study is, to the best of our knowledge, an original attempt to develop and assess the generalization performance of a DL model for AF events detection from long term beat-to-beat intervals across geography, ages and sexes. The new recurrent DL model, denoted ArNet2, is developed on a large retrospective dataset of 2,147 patients totaling 51,386 h obtained from continuous electrocardiogram (ECG).

Multiomic analysis of malignant pleural mesothelioma identifies molecular axes and specialized tumor profiles driving intertumor heterogeneity.

Nat Genet

April 2023

Rare Cancers Genomics Team, Genomic Epidemiology Branch, International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization, Lyon, France.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive cancer with rising incidence and challenging clinical management. Through a large series of whole-genome sequencing data, integrated with transcriptomic and epigenomic data using multiomics factor analysis, we demonstrate that the current World Health Organization classification only accounts for up to 10% of interpatient molecular differences. Instead, the MESOMICS project paves the way for a morphomolecular classification of MPM based on four dimensions: ploidy, tumor cell morphology, adaptive immune response and CpG island methylator profile.

We investigated the shape of the relationship between longitudinal uric acid (UA) and the hazard of kidney failure and death in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, and attempted to identify thresholds associated with increased hazards. We included CKD stage 3-5 patients from the CKD-REIN cohort with one serum UA measurement at cohort entry. We used cause-specific multivariate Cox models including a spline function of current values of UA (cUA), estimated from a separate linear mixed model.

Introduction: Congenital hypothyroidism with gland-in-situ (CH-GIS) is usually attributed to mutations in the genes involved in thyroid hormone production. The diagnostic yield of targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) varied widely between studies. We hypothesized that the molecular yield of targeted NGS would depend on the severity of CH.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the role of platelet activation in influencing mortality rates in COVID-19 patients by analyzing two patient cohorts for blood biomarkers related to platelet activity.
  • In cohort A of 208 patients, higher levels of soluble platelet biomarkers were noted in critical patients, linking them to increased in-hospital mortality; however, this association was not significant when adjusting for coagulopathy indicators.
  • Results from cohort B, which included nearly 2900 patients, indicated that prior use of antiplatelet medications did not significantly affect mortality outcomes, suggesting that coagulopathy may be a more critical factor in the progression of COVID-19.

March 2023

Department of Medicine, McMaster University, 20 Copeland Avenue, David Braley Research Building, Suite C3-117, Hamilton, ON L8L 0A3, Canada.

Participants enrolled in cardiovascular disease (CVD) randomized controlled trials are not often representative of the population living with the disease. Older adults, children, women, Black, Indigenous and People of Color, and people living in low- and middle-income countries are typically under-enrolled in trials relative to disease distribution. Treatment effect estimates of CVD therapies have been largely derived from trial evidence generated in White men without complex comorbidities, limiting the generalizability of evidence.
