This study investigates the diagnostic practices for mucormycosis among 30 French University Hospital mycology laboratories, in 2024. All laboratories perform both direct examination and culture, with fluorescent brighteners being the most commonly used method for direct examination. While 77 % of the participating laboratories routinely identify Mucorales to the species level, with 70 % having adopted Mucorales-specific quantitative PCR, primarily for the diagnosis of invasive fungal infections.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the effectiveness of serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) as an early biomarker for predicting acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with rhabdomyolysis who visited emergency departments in France.
  • Conducted across five adult EDs, the research included 197 patients with high creatine phosphokinase levels, assessing NGAL levels upon admission and evaluating its correlation with AKI development within 48 hours.
  • Out of those studied, 29% developed AKI by day two, with NGAL showing moderate predictive ability, indicated by an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) of 0.60, meaning further refinement and research are needed

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD is commonly treated with medication, such as methylphenidate, but some families and practitioners prefer psychosocial interventions as first line treatments. Many studies have investigated neurofeedback as a potential non-pharmacological treatment for ADHD yielding contradictory findings regarding its efficiency.

In medicine, virological diagnosis is mainly based on the detection of the viral genome and antigens, or on the identification of specific antibodies produced in response to infection. These strategies are suitable for characterizing an active infection or past contact with an already known virus. The recent development of tests for evaluating the host's cellular immune response opens new perspectives for personalized patient care based on immunomonitoring.

Article Synopsis
  • - Microtubule affinity-regulating kinase 2 (MARK2) is crucial for neurons to develop properly, and variants in MARK2 have been linked to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental issues, with most being loss-of-function mutations.
  • - A study analyzed 31 individuals with MARK2 variants showing ASD along with unique facial features, finding that the loss of MARK2 disrupts early neuron development and leads to abnormal growth patterns in neural cells.
  • - Research using iPSC models and MARK2-deficient mice highlighted the link between MARK2 loss and issues in neuronal function, connecting it to the reduction of the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway, while suggesting lithium as a potential treatment

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common inherited disorder and is characterized by an inflammatory phenotype. Here, we found that in bronchial epithelium reconstituted form lung tissue biopsies from patients with CF, the RNA-binding protein tristetraprolin (TTP), a key regulator of inflammation, is dysregulated in cells that strongly express cytokines and interleukins. TTP activity is regulated by extensive post-translational modifications, particularly phosphorylation.

Background: In surgical simulation, evaluation tools are necessary to allow the overall and specific level of each gesture to be assessed for learners, to allow active feedback and follow-up. The aim of this study was to create and validate a scale for the assessment of competences for neck dissection (ND) and total laryngectomy (TL) in head and neck surgical oncology simulation specific for revascularized cadavers' models.

Methods: Two independent scales were created for ND and TL based on a two-round Delphi method.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Bipolar disorder (BD) is a complex mental health condition, and researchers aimed to identify a neurodevelopmental phenotype (NDP) that contributes to its development and impacts clinical outcomes.
  • By analyzing data from over 4,400 BD patients, they established nine specific clinical features that characterize this NDP, which are linked to poorer prognosis and treatment responses.
  • The findings suggest that patients with a higher NDP load may have overlapping genetic factors with ADHD, indicating a potential shared biological basis for these disorders.

Treatment of relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) is challenging as patients exhaust all available therapies and the disease becomes refractory to standard drug classes. Here we report the final results of LocoMMotion, the first prospective study of real-world clinical practice (RWCP) in triple-class exposed (TCE) patients with RRMM, with a median follow-up of 26.4 months (range, 0.

  • The study investigated the use of avdoralimab, an anti-C5aR1 monoclonal antibody, as a treatment for bullous pemphigoid, a skin condition associated with C5a-C5aR1 activation.
  • A phase 2 trial was conducted where patients were randomly assigned to receive either topical steroids alone or with avdoralimab, observing their disease control and remission after treatment.
  • Results showed no significant benefit from avdoralimab compared to steroids alone, as similar rates of disease control and remission were observed in both groups, with no reported adverse effects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how ultrasonography-detected synovitis progresses in rheumatoid arthritis patients in remission over a year and its ability to predict future relapses or radiographic progression.
  • An independent investigator conducted ultrasonography every three months, finding that a significant number of patients exhibited persistent synovitis, indicating ongoing inflammation.
  • Key predictors of relapse or progression included persistent synovitis observed through ultrasonography and an increase in disease activity scores right before a relapse occurred.

: Most data on radiofrequency (RF) effects come from ex vivo or in vitro studies that quantify lesions using width and/or depth, while electrophysiologists use manufacturers' indirect indices. The objective of this study was to evaluate RF lesion volume by high-resolution MRI of excised lesions in an in vivo porcine model, comparing a low-energy long-duration (LE) (20 W, 50 s) RF application strategy with a high-energy short-duration (HE) (50 W, 20 s) one. : Eighteen piglets were divided into LE (n = 9) and HE groups (n = 9).

Univ Montpellier, Montpellier, France; CNRS, Institut de Recherche en Infectiologie de Montpellier (IRIM), 1919 Route de Mende, Montpellier, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Adult brain explants (OPABs) can be cultured to study synaptic plasticity, which is important for understanding brain functions.
  • The research involved stimulating these explants on a 3D microelectrode array to examine changes in neuronal connections over several days.
  • Results showed that while immediate synaptic changes didn't occur, after a few days, significant responses were noted, indicating that these brain tissues retain the ability for synaptic modulation, especially influenced by dopamine.

Most secreted proteins are transported through the "conventional" endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi apparatus exocytic route for their delivery to the cell surface and release into the extracellular space. Nonetheless, formative discoveries have underscored the existence of alternative or "unconventional" secretory routes, which play a crucial role in exporting a diverse array of cytosolic proteins outside the cell in response to intrinsic demands, external cues, and environmental changes. In this context, lysosomes emerge as dynamic organelles positioned at the crossroads of multiple intracellular trafficking pathways, endowed with the capacity to fuse with the plasma membrane and recognized for their key role in both conventional and unconventional protein secretion.
