Background: Patients with chronic arthritis (CA) ideally apply self-management behaviors between consultations. This enduring, tedious task of keeping track of disease-related parameters, adhering to medication schemes, and engaging in physical therapy may be supported by using a mobile health (mHealth) app. However, further research is needed to determine which self-management features are valued most by adult patients with CA patients.

Background: Hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (HEHE) is a rare vascular tumor which has an intermediate aggressive behavior. Although the value of liver transplantation (LT) is well established, its place in the management of HEHE is still unclear. The aim of this study is to confirm, based on a very large patient cohort, the value of LT in the management of HEHE and to identify risk factors for post-LT recurrence.

Five-year results of the pilot trial of a sutureless valve.

J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

July 2015

Cardio-Thoracic Department, Transplantation & Vascular Surgery, Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany.

Objective: A prospective trial was designed to evaluate the feasibility of the Perceval sutureless aortic valve. We report the 5-year clinical and hemodynamic outcome.

Methods: A total of 30 patients (mean age: 80.

Background: Life-threatening Streptococcus pneumoniae infections often occur after hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT); vaccination is important for prevention.

Methods: In an open-label study, patients (n = 251) 3-6 months after allogeneic HSCT received 3 doses of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) at 1-month intervals, a fourth dose 6 months later, and 1 dose of 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) 1 month later. Immunogenicity at prespecified time points and vaccine safety were assessed.

Background: In animal and in vitro models, FK778 inhibits acute rejection, modifies vasculopathy, and shows anti-viral activity. We report first efficacy and safety data of FK778 in human kidney transplant recipients at two concentration-controlled ranges.

Methods: In a double-blind manner, 149 patients were randomized to a 12-week treatment with FK778 in combination with tacrolimus (Tac) and corticosteroids (S).

Unlabelled: Three omega-(18)F-fluoro-n-alkyl-beta-D-glucosides (alkyl = ethyl (5a)), n-butyl (5b), and n-octyl (5c)) were synthesized and evaluated as potential substrates for the sodium/D-glucose cotransporter SGLT1.

Methods: The ligands were prepared by (18)F-fluoride displacement of the corresponding tetraacetyl-protected tosylate alkylglucoside precursors in CH(3)CN, followed by hydrolysis of the protective acetate esters with NaOMe/MeOH. Transport of the nonradioactive analogs 5a, 5b, and 5c by the human sodium-D-glucose cotransporter hSGLT1 was characterized in vitro in oocytes of Xenopus laevis that expressed hSGLT1.

Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) whole body positron emission tomography (PET) scan is increasingly used in the diagnostic work-up or follow-up of patients. In these conditions, positive PET scans with unexpected hot spots within the thyroid region could be defined as thyroid FDG-PET incidentaloma (in analogy with unexpected sonographic thyroid nodules). We describe eight consecutive patients referred to the endocrine department because of thyroid "hot spots," incidentally detected by whole body FDG-PET scan (September 1999 to March 2001).

A case is presented of a primary extragonadal retroperitoneal germ cell tumor (seminoma) in a 51-year-old male. The ultimate diagnosis was only achieved after curative surgical resection of the tumor. There was no demonstrable testicular neoplasm.

We report on a woman with clinical Cushing's syndrome confirmed by biochemical data. The Cushing's syndrome was shown to be ACTH dependent and inferior petrosal sinus sampling pointed to an ectopic source. After resection of a lung carcinoid a well documented remission of Cushing's syndrome was obtained.

Hepatitis C: seven years after the discovery of the causative agent.

Acta Clin Belg

June 1997

Afdeling Lever- en pancreasziekten, Dienst Inwendige Geneeskunde, Universitaire Ziekenhuizen Gasthuisberg, Leuven.

Following the discovery in 1989 of the hepatitis C virus (HCV), sensitive and specific diagnostic assays have shown the involvement of this RNA virus in a myriad of liver disease and extrahepatic pathology. The genetic heterogeneity of HCV is an exciting challenge in the field of epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and vaccine development. Although viral eradication has not been achieved in the majority of patients by using interferon as single agent, the combination with ribavirin seems to have a better outlook.

To increase our understanding of the nature and source of immunoreactive inhibin-related material during pregnancy, we studied inhibin secretion in women pregnant after spontaneous conception and after in vitro fertilization (IVF). Two solid phase enzyme-amplified immunoassays (EASIAs) were used to measure the inhibin A dimer and inhibin alpha-subunit immunoreactivities (alpha-inhibin). In spontaneous pregnancies, levels of both inhibin A and alpha-inhibin were low during the first two trimesters of pregnancy, but a significant increase was observed toward the end of gestation.

Ischemic event characteristics determine the extent of myocardial stunning in conscious dogs.

Basic Res Cardiol

September 1996

Department of Anesthesiology, Universitaire Ziekenhuizen Gasthuisberg, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.

Both the severity and duration of postischemic myocardial dysfunction ("stunned" myocardium) are unpredictable and may vary considerably between subjects that underwent apparently similar ischemic insults. To explain this heterogeneous response of the heart to ischemia and reperfusion, we investigated the determinants of stunning in conscious dogs. Twenty-five dogs were chronically instrumented for measurement of global and regional myocardial performance (wall thickening) and myocardial perfusion (coloured microspheres).

The haemodynamic effects of urapidil, an alpha 1-antagonist with central serotoninergic properties, were studied in an experimental canine model of chronic ischaemic heart disease. Global and regional haemodynamic recordings were made in conscious dogs with ameroid-induced single vessel coronary artery occlusion. Three intravenous bolus-infusion doses of urapidil (0.

Two siblings with esophageal atresia are reported, and literature data as to familial occurrence and heredity have been reviewed. Until now, only statistical data can be given: the recurrence risk for sibs after one affected child is around 0.5-2% and after two affected children around 20%.

It is generally accepted that biliary secretion is rate-limiting for the plasma-to-bile transport of a saturating load of bilirubin. Previous studies from this laboratory have suggested a relationship between the hepatic bilirubin uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase activity and the apparent maximal rate of bilirubin secretion (excretory transport maximum). The present study was undertaken to further investigate this relationship in rats with a wide range of transferase levels and to analyze the effects of transferase activity on the formation of bilirubin monoglucuronides and diglucuronides in vivo and in vitro.

Because of the contradictory statements published about the influence of the shunt properties of the upper airway on the measurements of the respiratory impedence by means of the forced oscillation technique, this influence has been reevaluated. In healthy adults and children and in patients with obstructive lung disease, the total respiratory impedance was measured by applying oscillations at the mouth (conventional technique) or around the head (head generator technique), with the cheeks either supported by the hands or not. In healthy adults the two techniques (conventional cheeks supported and head generator) yield similar results for respiratory resistance (Rrs) and a more pronounced increase of respiratory reactance (Xrs) with frequency with the head generator.
