Short metacarpals and/or metatarsals are typically observed in pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) type Ia (PHP1A) or pseudo-PHP (PPHP), disorders caused by inactivating GNAS mutations involving exons encoding the alpha-subunit of the stimulatory G protein (Gsα). Skeletal abnormalities similar to those in PHP1A/PPHP were present in several members of an extended Belgian family without evidence for abnormal calcium and phosphate regulation. Direct nucleotide sequencing of genomic DNA from an affected individual (190/III-1) excluded GNAS mutations.

Contemporary techniques in percutaneous coronary intervention for bifurcation lesions.

Expert Rev Cardiovasc Ther

October 2018

a Amsterdam Heart Center, Department of Cardiology , Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam , The Netherlands.

Treatment of coronary bifurcation lesions with contemporary state-of-the-art percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is still associated with higher rate of adverse cardiovascular events compared to non-bifurcation lesions. Bench testing and virtual computer modeling have increased our understanding of bifurcation PCI guiding refinement in bifurcation techniques. New insights on bifurcation PCI have the potential to further improve clinical outcomes in patients presenting with bifurcation lesions.

Second-generation cryoballoon ablation for recurrent atrial fibrillation after an index cryoballoon procedure: a staged strategy with variable balloon size.

J Interv Card Electrophysiol

January 2019

Heart Rhythm Management Center, Postgraduate Course in Cardiac EP and pacing, Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussels, Laarbeeklaan 101, 1090 Jette, Brussels, Belgium.

Purpose: Currently, information on the optimal approach of redo procedures for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) is limited. Radiofrequency ablation is the preferred technique, with reported success rates of 50-70% at 1-2 years, whereas only few reports exist on redo cryoballoon (CB) ablations. We describe outcomes on a systematic approach of repeat procedures with a second-generation cryoballoon (CB-2) after a successful index CB ablation.

The aim of this case report is to draw attention on possible false human leucocyte antigen (HLA) genotyping in acquired aplastic anaemia prior to allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In acquired aplastic anaemia loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of chromosome 6p is known to occur in around 12%. We report false HLA genotyping results due to LOH and a coinciding steep rise in neutrophils following filgrastim stimulation in a patient with very severe aplastic anaemia.

Article Synopsis
  • Deadenylases are enzymes that help break down a part of mRNA called the poly(A) tail, which is important for how genes work.
  • Researchers found that a specific mutation in a gene called TOE1 causes a rare disease called Pontocerebellar hypoplasia type 7 (PCH7) that affects the brain and body development.
  • They discovered that TOE1 is important for processing small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs), and if TOE1 is not working properly, these snRNAs don't get made correctly, which can lead to the symptoms of PCH7.

Background: Despite the considerable amount of evidence from randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, uncertainty remains regarding the efficacy and safety of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation as compared to conventional ventilation in the early treatment of respiratory distress syndrome in preterm infants. This results in a wide variation in the clinical use of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation for this indication throughout the world. The reasons are an unexplained heterogeneity between trial results and a number of unanswered, clinically important questions.
