Growth hormone (GH) deficiency (GHD) in children and adolescents can vary in severity and origin, with GH replacement therapy proving effective in achieving genetic target height. Optimal outcomes are seen in those treated early and with higher doses. As patients approach adult height, priorities shift towards optimizing metabolic effects, maintaining body composition, and enhancing bone mass and muscle strength.

Chronic total occlusions (CTOs) are frequent in patients with previous coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is the usual revascularization strategy. Whether or not the presence of a graft on a CTO vessel and post-PCI graft patency impacts outcomes after CTO-PCI is unknown.

Objective: To explore the usefulness of the 'differential renal length index' (iDRL) before and after pyeloplasty, as the anteroposterior diameter is commonly used to quantify hydronephrosis but inaccuracies arise due to interobserver variability, hydration status and pure intra-renal dilatation.

Patients And Methods: Prospectively collected data, from two centres, of all children undergoing pyeloplasty for isolated unilateral pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction (PUJO) (2015-2021) were analysed. Subgroup analysis was undertaken: Group A - differential renal function (DRF) ≥40%, Group B - subnormal DRF (20-39%), and Group C - symptomatic.

Prevalence of Liver Steatosis in Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Patients: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

J Clin Med

May 2024

Department of Nephrology and Arterial Hypertension, Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel (UZ Brussel), Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), 1090 Brussels, Belgium.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disease caused by pathogenetic variants in either the or genes. Consequently, the mechanistic target of the rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) pathway, a regulator of cell growth, metabolism, and survival, becomes inappropriately activated, leading to the development of benign tumors in multiple organs. The role of mTORC1 in lipid metabolism and liver steatosis in TSC patients has not been well-studied, and clinical data on liver involvement in this population are scarce.

Unlabelled: In this case report, we present a 23-year-old patient with complaints of a recurrent plop sound in the left ear. Non-contrast CT and MR imaging revealed an enlargement of the tympanic segment of the facial canal due to venous congestion. A persistent stapedial artery (PSA) and absent foramen spinosum were identified as concomitant factors.

Late overlooked intraluminal right atrial metastasis in endometrial carcinoma.

Acta Cardiol

February 2024

Department of Cardiology, UZ, Antwerpen, Edegem, Belgium.

We report the case of an 83-year-old woman that presented with progressive dyspnoea due to an intraluminal right atrial metastasis of an endometrial carcinoma that had been diagnosed 4 years earlier. Treatment up to that point consisted of an hysterectomy and resection and radiation of local recurrences. Follow-up had been interpreted as negative, despite a PET-CT 8 months before presentation which had shown increased FDG uptake in the right atrium, but was unfortunately considered benign.

Hysteroscopic myomectomy: The guidelines of the International Society for Gynecologic Endoscopy (ISGE).

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

January 2022

Endoscopic Training Center Antwerp (ETCA), Stuivenberg General Hospital, Ziekenhuis Netwerk Antwerpen (ZNA), Antwerp, Belgium; Università degli Studi dell'Insubria, Varese, Italy.

Objective: With this publication, the International Society for Gynecologic Endoscopy (ISGE) aims to provide the clinicians with the recommendations arising from the best evidence currently available on hysteroscopic myomectomy (HM).

Study Design: The ISGE Task Force for HM defined key clinical questions, which led the search of Medline/PubMed and the Cochrane Database. We selected and analyzed relevant English-language articles, published from January 2005 to June 2021, including original works, reviews and the guidelines previously published by the European Society for Gynecological Endoscopy (ESGE) and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL), in which bibliographies were also checked in order to identify additional references, using the medical subject heading (MeSH) term "Uterine Myomectomy" (MeSH Unique ID: D063186) in combination with ''Myoma" (MeSH Unique ID: D009214) and ''Hysteroscopy" (MeSH Unique ID: D015907).

Objective: To describe a cohort of T3-T4 thoracic disc herniations (TDHs), their clinical and radiologic characteristics, and unique thoracoscopic transaxillary approach (TAA).

Methods: All patients operated on for a T3-T4 TDH with minimal follow-up of 1 year were selected.

Results: Eight TAA procedures (6 males and 2 females) were included (1.

Background And Aim: Patients with methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) and propionic acidemia (PA) and urea cycle disorders (UCD), treated with a protein restricted diet, are prone to growth failure. To obtain optimal growth and thereby efficacious protein incorporation, a diet containing the essential and functional amino acids for growth is necessary. Optimal growth will result in improved protein tolerance and possibly a decrease in the number of decompensations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how cancer cachexia (a condition that causes weight loss and weakness in cancer patients) affects survival rates.
  • It compared two definitions of cachexia: one by Fearon, which focuses mainly on weight loss, and one by Evans, which includes more symptoms like fatigue and nutrition problems.
  • The results showed that the Evans definition is better at predicting how long patients will live, suggesting that other symptoms besides weight loss are important to consider.

This paper summarises the guidelines and recommendations that were generated during a number of discussion forums attended by the majority of Belgian cytometry laboratory professionals. These forums focused on the rational and optimal use of flow cytometric evaluations in the clinical laboratory setting. The aim was to improve the coherence of the testing panels and the quality of the results and--as such--the clinical diagnostic information.

We compared the technique of immunofluorescence on clinical samples (IFCS) and immunofluorescence on centrifuged cell cultures (IFCC) for the detection of respiratory viruses, using monoclonal antibodies. Four hundred fourty five nasopharyngeal aspirates were tested prospectively for RSV, influenza- (A and B), parainfluenza viruses (1, 2, 3) and adenovirus. IFCS and IFCC detected 94% and 51% of RSV respectively, 78.
