The European Union (EU)-funded KitNewCare consortium aims to create and manage a comprehensive EU-wide programme focusing on sustainability in Kidney Care. Around 850 million people have chronic kidney disease (CKD) worldwide and by 2030, 6 million will need kidney replacement therapy, mainly haemodialysis. As the world population gets older, projections for the end of the century worsen.

Background: Belzutifan is a first-in-class hypoxia-inducible factor subunit 2α (HIF-2α) inhibitor approved at a dose of 120 mg once daily for certain adults with VHL disease and adults with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) following therapy with a programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) [or programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1)] inhibitor and a vascular endothelial growth factor tyrosine kinase inhibitor. However, whether the belzutifan dose could be optimized is unclear.

Patients And Methods: The phase II LITESPARK-013 study (NCT04489771) enrolled patients with advanced clear cell RCC whose disease progressed after one to three prior systemic therapies, including an anti-PD-(L)1 regimen.

Background: Potentially curative therapy for locally advanced gastric cancer consists of gastrectomy, usually in combination with perioperative chemotherapy. An oncological resection includes a radical (R0) gastrectomy and modified D2 lymphadenectomy; generally, a total omentectomy is also performed, to ensure the removal of possible microscopic disease. However, the omentum functions as a regulator of regional immune responses to prevent infections and prevents adhesions which could lead to bowel obstructions.

Pan-pathogen deep sequencing of nosocomial bacterial pathogens in Italy in spring 2020: a prospective cohort study.

Lancet Microbe

October 2024

Department of Biostatistics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway; Parasites and Microbes, Wellcome Sanger Institute, Cambridge, UK; Helsinki Institute for Information Technology, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland. Electronic address:

Background: Nosocomial infections pose a considerable risk to patients who are susceptible, and this is particularly acute in intensive care units when hospital-associated bacteria are endemic. During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the surge of patients presented a significant obstacle to the effectiveness of infection control measures. We aimed to assess the risks and extent of nosocomial pathogen transmission under a high patient burden by designing a novel bacterial pan-pathogen deep-sequencing approach that could be integrated with standard clinical surveillance and diagnostics workflows.

Aims: Risk assessment is essential in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. In patients with recent acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or coronary revascularization, risk prediction tools, like the European Society of Cardiology guideline recommended SMART-REACH risk score, are increasingly used to predict the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events enabling risk-based personalized prevention. However, little is known about the association between risk stratification and the social and healthcare costs at a population level.

Identification of Predictors for Progression of Scoliosis in Rett Syndrome.

Dev Neurorehabil

July 2024

Department of Epidemiology, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Care and Public Health Research Institute, Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that often leads to scoliosis as a common orthopedic issue.
  • This study investigates which factors can predict the rapid worsening of scoliosis in patients with Rett syndrome to help create models for future predictions.
  • Key predictors for rapid progression identified include the patient's age at the start of the study, initial Cobb angle measurements, and the presence of epilepsy.

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling encompasses a multitude of functions, including regulation of cell proliferation, differentiation, morphogenesis, and patterning. FGFs and their receptors (FGFR) are crucial for adult tissue repair processes. Aberrant FGF signal transduction is associated with various pathological conditions such as cartilage damage, bone loss, muscle reduction, and other core pathological changes observed in orthopedic degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis (OA), intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD), osteoporosis (OP), and sarcopenia.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined the changes in length of stay (LoS) for very preterm infants in NICUs and identified what factors influenced these trends over time in the Netherlands from 2008 to 2021.
  • - It found that overall LoS increased by an average of 5.1 days, primarily due to longer stays at level II hospitals, while NICU stays remained stable.
  • - The increase in LoS is linked to more severe complications in extremely preterm infants, suggesting that the health challenges faced by these infants directly impact their duration in care before discharge.

Object: In a typical MR session, several contrasts are acquired. Due to the sequential nature of the data acquisition process, the patient may experience some discomfort at some point during the session, and start moving. Hence, it is quite common to have MR sessions where some contrasts are well-resolved, while other contrasts exhibit motion artifacts.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a common disease, which can present with a variety of symptoms. Optimal use of diagnostics is challenging given the tight and delicate balance between underdiagnosis and over-testing or overdiagnosis. Diagnostic delay occurs in a substantial part of patients, and seems more common in those with known cardiopulmonary disease or non-specific signs and symptoms.

Background: Despite therapeutic hypothermia (TH) and neonatal intensive care, 45-50% of children affected by moderate-to-severe neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) die or suffer from long-term neurodevelopmental impairment. Additional neuroprotective therapies are sought, besides TH, to further improve the outcome of affected infants. Allopurinol - a xanthine oxidase inhibitor - reduced the production of oxygen radicals and subsequent brain damage in pre-clinical and preliminary human studies of cerebral ischemia and reperfusion, if administered before or early after the insult.

KRAS G12C mutation is prevalent in ~4% of colorectal cancer (CRC) and is associated with poor prognosis. Divarasib, a KRAS G12C inhibitor, has shown modest activity as a single agent in KRAS G12C-positive CRC at 400 mg. Epidermal growth factor receptor has been recognized as a major upstream activator of RAS-MAPK signaling, a proposed key mechanism of resistance to KRAS G12C inhibition in CRC.
