Functionalization of nanoparticles with ligands is a powerful tool to achieve efficient targeting of receptors expressed on specific cell types. For optimal ligand-receptor interactions, the ligands should be attached on the nanoparticle surface in a predictable manner with specific orientations and density that preserve their bioactivity. While there are many publications on nanoparticles functionalized with small ligands that meet these requirements, achieving these conditions is particularly challenging for protein-based ligands of higher molecular weight.

Carbon nanofiber (CNF) nanocatalyst hybrids hold great promise in fields such as energy storage, synthetic chemistry, and sensors. Current strategies to generate such hybrids are laborious and utterly incompatible with miniaturization and large-scale production. Instead, this work demonstrates that Ni nanoparticles embedded in three-dimensional (3D) CNFs of any shape and design can be easily prepared using electrospinning, followed by laser carbonization under ambient conditions.

Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) inhibitors allow for causative glaucoma therapy. Unfortunately, topically applied ROCK inhibitors suffer from high incidence of hyperemia and low intraocular bioavailability. Viral infection patterns often rely on precisely coordinated sequences of distinct ligand-receptor interactions, leading in many cases to an outstanding target cell specificity. A successful mimicry of viral targeting strategies to create more site-specific nanoparticles (NPs) would therefore require particle-cell interactions to also be adequately controllable. ERP and oscillatory differences in overweight/obese and normal-weight adolescents in response to food stimuli.

Background: Findings are mixed regarding the association of electroencephalographic (EEG) attentional bias measures and body weight, with few studies measuring food craving or intake and no study reporting oscillatory measures.

Methods: EEG data were collected while 28 satiated adolescents (14 overweight/obese) viewed pictures of neutral, low-calorie food, and high-calorie food stimuli and rated their desire to eat, before having access to high-calorie snacks.

Results: Unlike normal-weight adolescents, overweight/obese participants showed similar P300 amplitudes for high- and low-calorie food, and strongest event-related alpha band desynchronization for low-calorie stimuli.

Cell uptake, for example, is of paramount significance for a plethora of biomedical applications and does not exclusively depend on the intensity of multivalency.

In Drosophila, female development is governed by a single RNA-binding protein, Sex-lethal (Sxl), that controls the expression of key factors involved in dosage compensation, germline homeostasis and the establishment of female morphology and behaviour.
