The rising incidence of head and neck cancer represents a serious global health challenge, requiring more accurate diagnosis and innovative surgical approaches. Multimodal nonlinear optical microscopy, combining coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF), and second-harmonic generation (SHG) with deep learning-based analysis routines, offers label-free assessment of the tissue's morphochemical composition and allows early-stage and automatic detection of disease. For clinical intraoperative application, compact devices are required.

The yttrium-hydrogen system has gained attention because of near-ambient temperature superconductivity reports in yttrium hydrides at high pressures. We conducted a study using synchrotron single-crystal x-ray diffraction (SCXRD) at 87 to 171 GPa, resulting in the discovery of known (two YH phases) and five previously unknown yttrium hydrides. These were synthesized in diamond anvil cells by laser heating yttrium with hydrogen-rich precursors-ammonia borane or paraffin oil.

How will savanna trees and grasses be affected by growing season dry spells and altered seasonality and how tightly coupled are tree-grass phenologies with rainfall? Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS) imaging following in situ enzymatic digestion is a versatile analytical method for the untargeted investigation of protein distributions, which has rarely been used for plants so far. The present study describes a workflow for in situ tryptic digestion of plant seed tissue for MALDI MS imaging. Substantial modifications to the sample preparation procedure for mammalian tissues were necessary to cater to the specific properties of plant materials.

A line illumination Raman microscope extracts the underlying spatial and spectral information of a sample, typically a few hundred times faster than raster scanning. This makes it possible to measure a wide range of biological samples such as cells and tissues - that only allow modest intensity illumination to prevent potential damage - within feasible time frame. However, a non-uniform intensity distribution of laser line illumination may induce some artifacts in the data and lower the accuracy of machine learning models trained to predict sample class membership.

One of the foundational premises of ecology is that climate determines ecosystems. This has been challenged by alternative ecosystem state models, which illustrate that internal ecosystem dynamics acting on the initial ecosystem state can overwhelm the influence of climate, and by observations suggesting that climate cannot reliably discriminate forest and savanna ecosystem types. Using a novel phytoclimatic transform, which estimates the ability of climate to support different types of plants, we show that climatic suitability for evergreen trees and C4 grasses are sufficient to discriminate between forest and savanna in Africa.

Three series of cis- and trans-[bis(benzimidazol-2-ylidene)dichlorido]platinum(II) and cis-[(benzimidazol-2-ylidene)(DMSO)dichlorido]platinum(II) complexes were synthesised and screened for cytotoxicity against six human cancer cell lines. Depending on their N-alkyl and 5-alkoxycarbonyl substituents, two-digit nanomolar to single-digit micromolar IC values against cancer cell lines intrinsically resistant to or ill-responding to cisplatin were reached by both cis- and trans-configured complexes. The stability of the complexes under aqueous biotest conditions was shown via H and Pt NMR monitoring to be dependent on their configuration and their N-substituents.

This paper presents the () program and its application to the analysis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) data from multiphase mixtures of microcrystalline solids and powders. Superposition of numerous reflections originating from a large number of single-crystal domains of the same and/or different (especially unknown) phases usually precludes the sorting of reflections coming from individual domains, making their automatic indexing impossible. The algorithm is designed to quickly find subsets of reflections from individual domains in a whole set of SC-XRD data.

New mono- and di-nuclear thio-purine and thio-purine nucleoside gold(I) complexes were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated in vitro for biological activities in comparison to related known purine complexes. By combining known anti-tumoral thio-purines with RPAu moieties as present in auranofin, complexes with enhanced effects and selectivities were obtained, which not only act as cytostatics, but also disrupt tumor-specific processes. Their IC values in cytotoxicity test with tumor cell lines ranged from three-digit nanomolar to single-digit micromolar, revealing a tentative structure-activity relationship (SAR).
