The macro-metastasis/organ parenchyma interface (MMPI) is gaining increasing significance due to its prognostic relevance for cancer (brain) metastasis. We have developed an organotypic 3D ex vivo co-culture model that mimics the MMPI and allows us to evaluate the histopathological growth pattern (HGP) and infiltration grade of the tumor cells into the neighboring brain tissue and to study the interactions of cancer and glial cells ex vivo. This system consists of a murine brain slice and a 3D tumor plug that can be co-cultured for several days.

Human interferon (hINF) alpha 2b is clinically important pharmaceutical product included in combinatory therapy against chronic hepatitis C and B and complex therapy against several cancer diseases. Here, we created the genetic constructions, based on genome elements of potato virus X (PVX), carrying the infα2b gene for transient expression in plant cells. The created plasmid vector constructions were tested through Agrobacterium-mediated transient gene expression method in two plant species-Nicotiana benthamiana and Ocimum basilicum (sweet basil).

Background: In most of Europe and especially in Germany, there is currently a concerning rise in the number of hospital-acquired infections due to vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm). Therefore, there is a need to improve our understanding of the way VREfm spreads in hospitals. In this study, we investigated the molecular epidemiology of VREfm isolates from the first appearance at our university hospital in 2004 until 2010.

Background: The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays an important role in the occurrence and progression of prostate cancer (PCa). At the same time, the mechanisms and features of the interaction between tumor cells and individual components of the TME in PCa remain not fully elucidated. The aim was to study the expression levels of tumor-associated miR-7-5p, miR-19a-3p, and miR-23b-3p in the PCa tissue and to analyze their relationship with the features of TME.

Ewing's sarcoma (ES), the second most prevalent malignant osseous tumor in children and adolescents, primarily affects the extremities' long bones and pelvic region. Characterized by its aggressive growth, ES often presents with symptoms like swelling, pain, and neurological deficits, impacting various skeletal sites. ES involving the spine, particularly the sacral region, poses a significant challenge due to its rarity, aggressive nature, and limited sensitivity to treatments.

Background/aim: The aim of this study was to describe and evaluate the patterns, perioperative outcomes, and survival rates of patients subjected to hepatic resections for ovarian-derived liver metastasis as part of cytoreductive surgery with or without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Furthermore, we investigated two subgroups of tumor patterns: hematogenous liver metastasis and infiltrative liver metastatic spread.
Patients And Methods: A retrospective study was conducted.

Objective: Cancer patients are often overwhelmed when being informed about clinical trials. However, there is a lack of evidence-based strategies to improve physician-patient communication in this area. This study assessed the experiences and needs of cancer patients and their support persons (SPs) during the informed consent (IC) process prior to participation in clinical trials.

Introduction: Both navigation systems and robotics enable greater precision in the implantation of an artificial knee joint. However, they do not improve clinical outcomes. We hypothesized that although implantation of a total knee arthroplasty results in reconstruction of the alignment in the coronal plane, the variable rotational tibial and variable translational femoral and tibial component positioning lead to a change in the remaining alignment parameters of the lower extremity.

Objective: Water-bearing systems are known as frequent Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) outbreak sources. However, many older buildings continue to have sanitary facilities in high-risk departments such as the ICU. We present two simultaneous prolonged multi-drug-resistant (MDR) PA outbreaks detected at the ICU of a pulmonology hospital, which were resolved by whole-genome sequencing (WGS).

Membranous Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) of Gram-negative bacteria are a secretion and delivery system that can disseminate bacterial products and interact with hosts and the environment. EVs of nonpathogenic bacteria deliver their contents by endocytosis into eukaryotic cells, however, no evidence exists for a fusion delivery mechanism. Here, we describe the fusion of exposed to space/Mars-like stressors simulated on the International Space Station vesicles (E-EVs) from Komagataeibacter oboediens to different types of model planar membranes in comparison with the EVs of the ground-based reference strain.

MXenes, a family of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, have been discovered as exciting candidates for various energy storage and conversion applications, including green hydrogen production by water splitting. Today, these materials mostly remain interesting objects for in-depth fundamental studies and scientific curiosity due to issues related to their preparation and environmental stability, limiting potential industrial applications. This work proposes a simple and inexpensive concept of composite electrodes composed of molybdenum- and titanium-containing MAX phases and MXene as functional materials.

Background: To date, there are no adequate care concepts for geriatric patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery in Germany. The Special Orthopaedic Geriatrics (SOG) study evaluates for the first time in Germany the impact of comprehensive orthogeriatric co-management on the outcome of elderly patients with elective hip and knee replacements compared to standard orthopaedic care.
Methods: The interim analysis of the ongoing study included 174 patients; 87 patients were randomized to the intervention group and 87 to the control group.

D-2-hydroxyglutarate (D-2-HG) accumulates in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with mutated isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) and in other malignancies. D-2-HG suppresses antitumor T-cell immunity but little is known about potential effects on non-malignant myeloid cells. Here we show that D-2-HG impairs human but not murine dendritic cell differentiation, resulting in a tolerogenic phenotype with low major histocompatibility class II expression.

Introduction: Essential components of fast-track or enhanced recovery programs in arthroplasty are the optimization of interdisciplinary organizational processes, as well as pre-, intra- and postoperative procedures in everyday clinical practice. The early postoperative mobilization of patients after joint replacement surgery is of central importance, with the aim of avoiding pain and complications. This article provides a detailed overview of fast-track procedures that have already been established in many units.

The article presents experimental results of research concerning the action of weak electric and magnetic fields on physicochemical transformations in samples of hard coal with a previously destabilized microstructure. The actions of electric and magnetic fields are fundamentally different by many parameters. It has been shown that after treatment with a weak electric field, coal posted an electret potential with an anomalously continuous charge relaxation.

The life expectancy of people living with HIV (PLWH) has greatly increased due to advancements in combination antiretroviral treatment (cART). However, this longer life has also increased the prevalence of age-related comorbidities, such as frailty, which now manifest sooner in this group. Frailty, a term coined by the insurance industry, has been broadened to include physical, cognitive, and emotional elements and has been recognized as a critical predictor of negative health outcomes.

The given information and forensic medical characteristics of injuries found on the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers who were in Russian captivity and died as a result of cruel, inhuman treatment and torture in 2022-2023. According to their nature and morphological features, the damage could be the result of high temperature action using hot metal objects, but more likely, the result of the use of electric current conductors (bare end of the wire). In other cases, after the exhumation of the occupied territory of the Kharkiv region, the manifestations of torture were brain injuries and fractures of the bones of the body caused by blunt hard objects with a limited surface.
