Anemia of Inflammation is a prevalent co-morbidity in patients with chronic inflammatory disorders. Inflammation causes hypoferremia and iron-restricted erythropoiesis by limiting Ferroportin (FPN)-mediated iron export from macrophages that recycle senescent erythrocytes. Macrophage cell surface expression of FPN is reduced by hepcidin-induced degradation and/or by repression of FPN (Slc40a1) transcription via cytokine and Toll-like receptor (TLR) stimulation.

Background And Aims: Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is driven by high caloric intake and sedentary lifestyle. Migration towards high income countries may induce these driving factors; yet, the influence of such on the prevalence of MAFLD is clearly understudied. Here, we investigated the Fatty Liver Index (FLI), a proxy of steatosis in MAFLD, after migration of Ghanaian subjects.

Changing mobility patterns combined with changes in the climate present challenges and opportunities for global health, requiring effective, relevant, and humane policy responses. This study used data from a systematic literature review that examined the intersection between climate change, migration, and health. The study aimed to synthesize policy recommendations in the peer-reviewed literature, regarding this type of environmental migration with respect to health, to strengthen the evidence-base.

In sub-Saharan Africa, vitamin A deficiency constitutes a severe health problem despite various supplementation and food fortification programs. Given that the intake of preformed vitamin A from animal products remains low in these countries, an efficient metabolization of plant-based provitamin A carotenoids is essential. Previously, adolescents in rural Ghana have shown high total plasma carotenoid concentrations, while 36% had a vitamin A deficiency (defined as plasma retinol < 0.

Introduction: Beta-cell autoantibodies are established markers of autoimmunity, which we compared between Ghanaian adults with or without diabetes, living in rural and urban Ghana and in three European cities.
Methods: In the multicenter cross-sectional Research on Obesity and Diabetes among African Migrants (RODAM) study (N = 5898), we quantified autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65Ab) by radioligand binding assay (RBA) and established cut-offs for positivity by displacement analysis. In a subsample, we performed RBA for zinc transporter-8 autoantibodies (ZnT8Ab).

Objective: Cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS) result from gain-of-function mutations in the NLRP3 gene, which causes excessive release of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and systemic inflammation. While pathogenetic NLRP3 variant phenotypes are well-characterized, low-penetrance NLRP3 variants represent a significant clinical challenge. The aims of this study were to determine the clinical phenotype, the in vitro biologic phenotype, and the effect of anti-IL-1 treatment in patients with low-penetrance NLRP3 variants.

Background: Elotuzumab, an immunostimulatory monoclonal antibody targeting signalling lymphocytic activation molecule (SLAM) family member 7 (SLAMF7), selectively kills SLAMF7-expressing myeloma cells through direct activation and engagement of the innate immune system, and thus might have clinical benefit in the treatment of myeloma. In phase 1 of this phase 1b-2 study, 82% of patients with relapsed multiple myeloma who were given elotuzumab plus lenalidomide and dexamethasone achieved an overall response. Here we report the final phase 2 results.

Different genetic routes account for colonic carcinogenesis. However, when analyzing colon cancer specimens, separation into different groups based on genetic alterations is commonly not performed. Thus, we here initiate the comparative phenotyping considering microsatellite instability/stability for clinical specimens.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is proposed to consist of two main pathogenetic groups. Although hyperdiploid MM (HD) is characterized by multiple trisomies of odd chromosomes, in nonhyperdiploid MM (NHD), one of the recurrent primary immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) translocations and deletion of chromosome 13 can frequently be found. In this study, we analyzed gene-expression profiles of patients with previously untreated MM.

Radioimmunotherapy using antibodies with favorable tumor targeting properties and high binding affinity is increasingly applied in cancer therapy. The potential of this valuable cancer treatment modality could be further improved by increasing the specific activity of the labeled proteins. This can be done either by coupling a large number of chelators which leads to a decreased immunoreactivity or by conjugating a small number of multimeric chelators.

By means of the tumorigenicity assay applying DNA from a patient with a gastric carcinoma (MA) we have already reported the identification of the putative oncogene myeov. In addition we have shown its involvement in t(11;14)-positive multiple myelomas and amplifications of breast tumours and esophageal carcinomas. The failure of myeov cDNA to induce tumour formation in NIH/3T3 cells prompted us to analyze the human sequences present in our MA-T1a1 tertiary transfectants.
