Introduction: Melanopsin is a photopigment with roles in mediating sleep and circadian-related processes, which are often disrupted in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Melanopsin also impacts cognition and synaptogenesis. This study investigated the associations between melanopsin genetic variants, sleep, and markers of brain health.

Camera traps are widely used in wildlife research and monitoring, so it is imperative to understand their strengths, limitations, and potential for increasing impact. We investigated a decade of use of wildlife cameras (2012-2022) with a case study on Australian terrestrial vertebrates using a multifaceted approach. We (i) synthesised information from a literature review; (ii) conducted an online questionnaire of 132 professionals; (iii) hosted an in-person workshop of 28 leading experts representing academia, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and government; and (iv) mapped camera trap usage based on all sources.

Background: Novel antidepressive substances are challenging the explanations for the mechanisms of action of traditional psychopharmacology.
Objective: What could be the shared effects of various antidepressants and in this context what role do extrapharmacological factors, such as the body and environment, play?
Material And Method: The available literature on clinical and preclinical data for assumed combined active factors of serotonergic psychedelic drugs, (es)ketamine, monoaminergic antidepressants and zuranolone are presented and the influence of context factors on the individual mechanisms of action is discussed.
Results: There are many indications that classical and novel pharmacological approaches could share similar mechanisms of action in the treatment of depression.

CLN2 and CLN3 diseases, the most common types of Batten disease (also known as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis), are childhood dementias associated with progressive loss of speech, language and feeding skills. Here we delineate speech, language, non-verbal communication and feeding phenotypes in 33 individuals (19 females) with a median age of 9.5 years (range 3-28 years); 16 had CLN2 and 17 CLN3 disease; 8/15 (53%) participants with CLN2 and 8/17 (47%) participants with CLN3 disease had speech and language impairments prior to genetic diagnosis.

Background: Traumatic hip dislocations are associated with high morbidity and overall limitations of daily living activities. Residual disability inhibits returning to work after severe injuries and minimizes financial independence and social involvement, which are both related to well-being and good health. The aim of this study was to analyze epidemiological and socioeconomic status following traumatic hip dislocations to identify predictors for return to work.

Importance: The proportion of colorectal cancer (CRC) cases attributable to excess weight, known as population attributable fraction (PAF), has been commonly based on measures of body mass index (BMI). Central obesity metrics, such as waist circumference (WC) and waist to hip ratio (WHR), are potentially better indicators of adiposity and have demonstrated stronger associations with CRC incidence.
Objectives: To examine PAFs of CRC cases that are attributable to high WC and WHR and compare them to those attributable to high BMI.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) constitutes the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide and advanced CRCs are resistant to targeted therapies, chemotherapies and immunotherapies. p38α (Mapk14) has been suggested as a therapeutic target in CRC; however, available p38α inhibitors only allow for insufficient target inhibition. Here we describe a unique class of p38α inhibitors with ultralong target residence times (designated ULTR-p38i) that robustly inhibit p38α downstream signaling and induce distinct biological phenotypes.

Mental health is shaped by socio-environmental determinants, yet traditional research approaches struggle to capture their complex interactions. This review explores the potential of generative agents, powered by large language models, to simulate human-like behaviour in virtual environments for mental health research. We outline potential applications including the modelling of adverse life events, urbanicity, climate change, discuss potential challenges and describe how generative agents could transform mental health research.

Belief processing and self-referential processing have been consistently associated with cortical midline structures, and cortical regions such as the vmPFC have been implicated in general belief processing. The neural correlates of self-referential belief are yet to be investigated. In this fMRI study, we presented 120 statements with trait adjectives to N = 27 healthy participants, who subsequently judged whether they believed these trait adjectives applied to themselves, a close person, or a public person.

Background: Intrasaccular flow diversion using the woven endobridge device (WEB; MicroVention, Aliso Viejo, CA, USA) for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms has demonstrated large scale safety and efficacy. However, limitations arise from its structural configuration, restricting its application to specific aneurysm sizes and shapes.
Technique Overview: We introduce the CUPCAKE technique, a combination of conventional coiling followed by WEB intrasaccular flow disruption in select cases of atypical aneurysms with technically challenging morphology not typically treatable by WEB alone.

The provision of courses in complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) varies widely between medical schools. To effectively improve CIM education, it is essential to use robust evaluation instruments that measure the impact of different educational interventions. This review aimed to identify and critically appraise qualitative and quantitative instruments used to evaluate CIM courses in undergraduate medical education.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one of the most aggressive malignancies, characterized by an increasing incidence and unfavorable prognosis. Despite recent advances, surgical resection combined with chemotherapy remains the only potentially curative therapeutic option. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to identify novel therapeutic targets and develop effective treatment strategies.

Nursing prioritization and rationing decisions in acute care hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic: a qualitative study The Covid-19 pandemic has put decisions regarding prioritization and rationing of care resources on the health policy agenda. The effects on the allocation of nursing resources in clinical practice are unclear. In order to derive implications for future pandemic situations, we analyzed the extent to which decisions were made about the distribution of resources in acute inpatient care and how bottlenecks were dealt with.

Background: In pancreatic surgery Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) represents the most dreaded complication, for which pancreatic texture is acknowledged as one of the strongest predictors. No consensual objective reference has been defined to evaluate the pancreas composition. The presented study aimed to mine histology data of the pancreatic tissue composition with AI assist and correlate it with clinic-pathological parameters derived from the RECOPANC study.

Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) is a ubiquitous lipid species in higher eukaryotes. Here, we synthesized a multifunctionalized PE derivative (1) designed to identify PE-binding proteins in intact cells through photo-crosslinking and subsequent isolation and proteomic analysis of the PE-protein conjugates. We show that the tool is also useful for tracking PE translocation to mitochondria after uncaging.

Background: The study investigates the prognostic impact of sex and sex-related differences in patients hospitalized with heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF). More data regarding the characterization of patients and their outcomes in the presence of HFmrEF are needed.
Methods And Results: Consecutive patients hospitalized with HFmrEF (ie, left ventricular ejection fraction 41%-49% and signs or symptoms of HF) were retrospectively included at one institution from 2016 to 2022.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic placed many restrictions on families and affected the mental health of parents and children. The present study examines how the restrictions imposed during the pandemic and parental mental health affect early childhood psychopathology.
Method: From September 2019 to December 2021, the Outpatient Department of Family Therapy at the Institute for Psychosocial Prevention, Heidelberg surveyed a clinical sample of 249 families who sought consultation for early childhood psychopathology.
