Many polymers exhibit much steeper temperature dependence of their structural relaxation time (higher fragility) than liquids of small molecules, and the mechanism of this unusually high fragility in polymers remains a puzzle. To reveal additional hints for understanding the underlying mechanism, we analyzed correlation of many properties of polymers to their fragility on example of model polymer polystyrene with various molecular weights (MWs). We demonstrate that these correlations work for short chains (oligomers), but fail progressively with increase in MW.

Drought-induced xylem embolism is a serious threat to plant survival under future climate scenarios. Hence, accurate quantification of species-specific vulnerability to xylem embolism is a key to predict the impact of climate change on vegetation. Low-cost hydraulic measurements of embolism rate have been suggested to be prone to artefacts, thus requiring validation by direct visualization of the functional status of xylem conduits using nondestructive imaging techniques, such as X-ray microtomography (microCT).

We have recently proposed a new erythrocyte-based model of study to predict the antiproliferative effects of selected heterocyclic scaffolds. Starting from the metabolic similarity between erythrocytes and cancer cells, we have demonstrated how the metabolic derangement induced by an indolone-based compound (DPIT) could be related to its antiproliferative effects. In order to prove the validity of our biochemical approach, in the present study the effects on erythrocyte functionality of its chemical precursor (PID), whose synthesis we reported, were investigated.

Diatoms have been shown to produce and release a wide range of secondary metabolites that mediate interactions between individuals of different species. Among these compounds, different types of fatty acid derived long-chained polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) have been related to multiple functions such as intra- or interspecific signals and adverse effect on the reproduction of marine organisms. Several studies have reported changes on growth, cell membrane permeability, flow cytometric properties and cell morphology in phytoplankton organisms exposed to PUAs, but little information is available on the effect of these compounds on benthic microalgae.

In spite of the growing variety of biological applications of dendrimer-based nanocarriers, a major problem of their potential applications in bio-medicine is related to the disruption of lipid bilayers and the cytotoxicity caused by the aggregation processes involved onto cellular membranes. With the aim to study model dendrimer-biomembrane interaction, the self-assembly processes of a mixture of charged polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers and dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) lipids were investigated by means of Zeta potential analysis, Raman and x-ray scattering. Zwitterionic DPPC liposomes showed substantially different behaviors during their interaction with negatively charged (generation G=2.

Through structure-based virtual screening and subsequent activity assays of selected natural products, Lavendustin B was previously identified as an inhibitor of HIV-1 integrase (IN) interaction with its cognate cellular cofactor, lens epithelium-derived growth factor (LEDGF/p75). In order to improve the inhibitory potency we have employed in silico-based approaches. Particularly, a series of new analogues was designed and docked into the LEDGF/p75 binding pocket of HIV-1 IN.

Influenza virus PA endonuclease has recently emerged as an attractive target for the development of novel antiviral therapeutics. This is an enzyme with divalent metal ion(s) (Mg(2+) or Mn(2+)) in its catalytic site: chelation of these metal cofactors is an attractive strategy to inhibit enzymatic activity. Here we report the activity of a series of N-acylhydrazones in an enzymatic assay with PA-Nter endonuclease, as well as in cell-based influenza vRNP reconstitution and virus yield assays.

We consider two separate atoms interacting with a single-mode optical or microwave resonator. When the frequency of the resonator field is twice the atomic transition frequency, we show that there exists a resonant coupling between one photon and two atoms, via intermediate virtual states connected by counterrotating processes. If the resonator is prepared in its one-photon state, the photon can be jointly absorbed by the two atoms in their ground state which will both reach their excited state with a probability close to one.

Levothyroxine (L-T4) is recommended as lifelong replacement therapy for hypothyroidism. Recent clinical and experimental data support the addition of levotriiodothyronine (L-T3) treatment in some selected hypothyroid patients when their symptoms persist and their quality of life remains impaired despite adequate L-T4 monotherapy. An increase in L-T3 prescriptions has been recently observed in Italy due to availability of different L-T3 formulations, making it possible to clinicians to prescribe L-T3 alone or in combination with L-T4.

The thionation reaction of carbonyl compounds with Lawesson's reagent (LR) has been studied using density functional theory methods and topological analyses. After dissociation of LR, the reaction takes place through a two-step mechanism involving (i) a concerted cycloaddition between one monomer and the carbonyl compound to form a four-membered intermediate and (ii) a cycloreversion leading to the thiocarbonyl derivative and phenyl(thioxo)phosphine oxide. Topological analyses confirmed the concertedness and asynchronicity of the process.

The combination of conventional anticancer therapy with other treatment modalities such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) is paving the way to novel more effective treatment of solid tumors via light exposure. With this idea in mind, in this paper, nanoparticles (NPs) based on Heptakis (2-oligo(ethyleneoxide)-6-hexadecylthio-)-β-CD (SC16OH) for dual delivery of Zinc-Phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and Docetaxel (DTX) were developed pointing to their potential application as nanomedicine for the combined photodynamic and chemo-therapy of solid tumors. NPs prepared by the emulsion-solvent evaporation technique displayed a hydrodynamic diameter of ≅ 200nm, a negative zeta potential (≅ -27mV) and a satisfactory entrapment efficiency of both drugs at a specific mass ratio.

Drought stress can impair leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), but the relative contribution of changes in the efficiency of the vein xylem water pathway and in the mesophyll route outside the xylem in driving the decline of Kleaf is still debated. We report direct measurements of dehydration-induced changes in the hydraulic resistance (R=1/K) of whole leaf (Rleaf), as well as of the leaf xylem (Rx) and extra-vascular pathways (Rox) in four Angiosperm species. Rleaf, Rx, and Rox were measured using the vacuum chamber method (VCM).

New potentiometric experiments have been performed in NaCl and in (CH3)4NCl media, to determine the protonation constants, the protonation enthalpy changes and the solubility of six natural α-amino acids, namely Glycine (Gly), Alanine (Ala), Valine (Val), Leucine (Leu), Serine (Ser) and Phenylalanine (Phe). The aim of the work is the rationalization of the protonation thermodynamics (log [Formula: see text], solubility and [Formula: see text]) in NaCl, determining recommended, tentative or provisional values in selected experimental conditions and to report, for the first time, data in a weak interacting medium, as (CH3)4NCl. Literature data analysis was performed selecting the most reliable values, analyzed together with new data here reported.

Recent reports on tree mortality associated with anomalous drought and heat have raised interest into processes underlying tree resistance/resilience to water stress. Hydraulic failure and carbon starvation have been proposed as main causes of tree decline, with recent theories treating water and carbon metabolism as interconnected processes. We subjected young plants of two native (Quercus pubescens [Qp] and Prunus mahaleb [Pm]) and two invasive (Robinia pseudoacacia [Rp] and Ailanthus altissima [Aa]) woody angiosperms to a prolonged drought leading to stomatal closure and xylem embolism, to induce carbon starvation and hydraulic failure.

We report on the unconventional optical properties exhibited by a two-dimensional array of thin Si nanowires arranged in a random fractal geometry and fabricated using an inexpensive, fast and maskless process compatible with Si technology. The structure allows for a high light-trapping efficiency across the entire visible range, attaining total reflectance values as low as 0.1% when the wavelength in the medium matches the length scale of maximum heterogeneity in the system.

Objective: Although a concern exists that 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins) might increase the risk of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH), the contribution of these agents to the relationship between serum cholesterol and disease occurrence has been poorly investigated.
Methods: We compared consecutive patients having ICH with age and sex-matched stroke-free control subjects in a case-control analysis, as part of the Multicenter Study on Cerebral Haemorrhage in Italy (MUCH-Italy), and tested the presence of interaction effects between total serum cholesterol levels and statins on the risk of ICH.
Results: A total of 3492 cases (mean age, 73.

Background: Interactions of ligands with proteins imply changes in the properties of the macromolecules that may deeply modify their biological activities and conformations and allow them to acquire new and, sometimes, unexpected abilities. The flavonoid phloretin has several pharmacological properties that are starting to be elucidated, one of which is the well-known inhibition of glucose transport.
Methods: The interactions of phloretin to human serum albumin have been investigated by fluorescence, UV-visible, FTIR spectroscopy, native electrophoresis, protein ligand docking studies, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy.
