We have previously demonstrated that clementines have in vitro drug interaction potential. To assess the clinical relevance of clementine-drug interaction, two single case experiments with repetitive phenotyping of CYP3A activity were conducted. Although an increment of 43% in the estimated midazolam clearance (eCL) was observed during the first experiment in a renal transplant patient on tacrolimus after 4-d consumption of clementines (1 kg/d), and an increment of +89% of eCL was observed during chronic consumption of clementine juice in a healthy male volunteer, these changes lie within the range of intra-individual variability.

The first infliximab biosimilar for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was introduced in 2013, and today eight anti-TNF alpha biosimilars (three for infliximab and five for adalimumab) have been approved and licensed by the European Medicines Agency. Biosimilars present great potential in terms of cost saving and possible consequential reinvestment in the health care system. The increasing knowledge about the process of biosimilar development and use in IBD and the publication of many prospective clinical studies and real-life clinical experiences have progressively changed the point of view of IBD physicians.

Two close parallel mirrors attract due to a small force (Casimir effect) originating from the quantum vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. These vacuum fluctuations can also induce motional forces exerted upon one mirror when the other one moves. Here, we consider an optomechanical system consisting of two vibrating mirrors constituting an optical resonator.

Acute lung injury (ALI) affects over 10% of patients hospitalised in critical care, with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) being the most severe form of ALI and having a mortality rate in the region of 40%. There has been slow but incremental progress in identification of biomarkers that contribute to the pathophysiology of ARDS, have utility in diagnosis and monitoring, and that are potential therapeutic targets (Calfee CS, Delucchi K, Parsons PE, Thompson BT, Ware LB, Matthay MA, Thompson T, Ware LB, Matthay MA, Lancet Respir Med 2014, 2:611--620). However, a major issue is that ARDS is such a heterogeneous, multi-factorial, end-stage condition that the strategies for "lumping and splitting" are critical (Prescott HC, Calfee CS, Thompson BT, Angus DC, Liu VX, Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2016, 194:147--155).

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory skin disease characterized by painful inflamed nodules, recurrent abscesses and fistulas located in apocrine gland-bearing body sites. The negative impact of HS on patient's quality of life (QoL) has been reported to be greater than other dermatologic conditions as psoriasis and atopic eczema, and its improvement is an important goal in disease management. Nowadays, there are no specific validated QoL instruments available for HS and generic dermatologic questionnaires are used.

Modeling optical tweezers in the T-matrix formalism has been of key importance for accurate and efficient calculations of optical forces and their comparison with experiments. Here we extend this formalism to the modeling of chiral optomechanics and optical tweezers where chiral light is used for optical manipulation and trapping of optically active particles. We first use the Bohren decomposition to deal with the light scattering of chiral light on optically active particles.

Honey is a food produced from honey bee widely used for the sweetening power and for its biological properties. In order to prevent the infection of the hive, different xenobiotics (antibiotics, pesticide) were frequently employed. One of these substances is the chloramphenicol, that given its chemical stability could often found in food.

Cavity-QED systems have recently reached a regime where the light-matter interaction strength amounts to a non-negligible fraction of the resonance frequencies of the bare subsystems. In this regime, it is known that the usual normal-order correlation functions for the cavity-photon operators fail to describe both the rate and the statistics of emitted photons. Following Glauber's original approach, we derive a simple and general quantum theory of photodetection, valid for arbitrary light-matter interaction strengths.

The interest in the use of non-invasive brain stimulation for enhancing neural functions and reducing symptoms in anxiety disorders is growing. Based on the DSM-V classification for anxiety disorders, we examined all available research using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for the treatment of specific phobias, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, and generalized anxiety disorder. A systematic literature search conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar databases provided 26 results: 12 sham-controlled studies and 15 not sham-controlled studies.

The oxygen in Earth's atmosphere is there primarily because of water oxidation performed by photosynthetic organisms using solar light and one specialized protein complex, photosystem II (PSII). High-resolution imaging of the PSII 'core' complex shows the ideal co-localization of multi-chromophore light-harvesting antennas with the functional reaction centre. Man-made systems are still far from replicating the complexity of PSII, as the majority of PSII mimetics have been limited to photocatalytic dyads based on a 1:1 ratio of a light absorber, generally a Ru-polypyridine complex, with a water oxidation catalyst.

In recent years, channels that mediate store-operated calcium entry (SOCE, i.e., the ability of cells to sense a decrease in endoplasmic reticulum luminal calcium and induce calcium entry across the plasma membrane) have been associated with a number of disorders, spanning from immune disorders to acute pancreatitis and have been suggested to be druggable targets.

Manipulative actions involving unstable interactions with the environment require controlling mechanical impedance through muscle co-contraction. While much research has focused on how the central nervous system (CNS) selects the muscle patterns underlying a desired movement or end-point force, the coordination strategies used to achieve a desired end-point impedance have received considerably less attention. We recorded isometric forces at the hand and electromyographic (EMG) signals in subjects performing a reaching task with an external disturbance.

GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) immunohistochemical expression is commonly considered to be a sensitive and specific diagnostic marker for breast and urothelial carcinomas in surgical pathology practice. However, since its expression has been also demonstrated in other tumors, GATA3 should be better used in conjunction with other immunohistochemical markers to establish tumor primitivity in metastatic setting. Interestingly, GATA3 expression seems to be significantly correlated with androgen receptor (AR) expression in breast carcinoma.

This paper presents an easy and low cost synthesis of chelating agents for potential medical and environmental applications, and the evaluation of the stability of their complexes with Fe, Al, Cu and Zn. In the last years, we synthesized and characterized effective iron chelators based on two kojic acid units joined by different linkers in position 6. In this study, we preserved kojic acid (a cheap and non-toxic molecule) as the basic unit but joined the two kojic acid units through ethylene diamine, propylene diamine and butylene diamine by reacting them with the OH groups in position 2.

Objective: Whether migraine modifies after spontaneous cervical artery dissection (sCeAD) more than after other stroke etiologic subtypes has never been adequately investigated.
Methods: In the setting of the Italian Project on Stroke in Young Adults (IPSYS), we compared the course of migraine before and after acute brain infarct in a group of migraine patients with sCeAD and a group of migraine patients whose ischemia was due to a cause other than CeAD (non-CeAD IS), matched by sex, age (± 3 years), and migraine subtype. We applied linear mixed models to evaluate pre-event vs post-event changes and differences between sCeAD and non-CeAD IS patients.
