In patients with low-risk polycythemia vera, exposure to low-dose Ropeginterferon alfa-2b (Ropeg) 100 µg every 2 weeks for 2 years was more effective than the standard treatment of therapeutic phlebotomy in maintaining target hematocrit (HCT) (< 45%) with a reduction in the need for phlebotomy without disease progression. In the present paper, we analyzed drug survival, defined as a surrogate measure of the efficacy, safety, adherence, and tolerability of Ropeg in patients followed up to 5 years. During the first 2 years, Ropeg and phlebotomy-only (Phl-O) were discontinued in 33% and 70% of patients, respectively, for lack of response (12 in the Ropeg arm vs.

Background And Aim: This cross-sectional study assessed knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of Italian Occupational Physicians (OPs) on Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among meat/poultry processing plant workers (MPWs) (Summer season 2020).
Methods: Data were collected through an online questionnaire including demographic characteristics, and items about COVID-19-related KAP in MPWs. A logistic regression was modelled in order to characterize explanatory variables of the outcome variable of having any professional experience as OP in meat/poultry processing industry.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess accuracy of the mean corneal stiffness ( kc , N/m) parameter to discriminate between patients with keratoconus and age-matched healthy subjects.
Methods: Dynamic Scheimpflug imaging tonometry was performed with Corvis ST (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH, Germany) in patients with keratoconus (n = 24; study group) and age-matched healthy subjects (n = 32; control). An image processing algorithm was developed to analyze the video sequence of the Corvis ST air-puff event and to determine the geometric and temporal parameters that correlated with the corneal tissue biomechanical properties.

We study the low-temperature phases of interacting bosons on a two-dimensional quasicrystalline lattice. By means of numerically exact path integral Monte Carlo simulations, we show that for sufficiently weak interactions the system is a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate that develops density modulations for increasing filling factor. The simultaneous occurrence of sizeable condensate fraction and density modulation can be interpreted as the analogous, in a quasicrystalline lattice, of supersolid phases occurring in conventional periodic lattices.

This paper presents a study for the realization of a space mission which employs nanosatellites driven by an external laser source impinging on an optimized lightsail, as a valuable technology to launch swarms of spacecrafts into the Solar System. Nanosatellites propelled by laser can be useful for heliosphere exploration and for planetary observation, if suitably equipped with sensors, or be adopted for the establishment of network systems when placed into specific orbits. By varying the area-to-mass ratio (i.

Medicinal gold compounds, a novel class of potential anticancer drugs, are believed to produce their pharmacological effects mainly through direct gold binding to protein targets at the level of solvent exposed cysteine (or selenocysteine) residues. We have explored therein the reactions of a panel of seven representative gold compounds with the cysteine protease cathepsin B according to an established ESI MS approach. Detailed information on the mode of protein binding of these gold compounds is gained; notably, quite distinct patterns of cathepsin B metalation have emerged from these studies.

We present a framework for the kinematics of a material body undergoing anelastic deformation. For such processes, the material structure of the body, as reflected by the geometric structure given to the set of body points, changes. The setting we propose may be relevant to phenomena such as plasticity, fracture, discontinuities and non-injectivity of the deformations.

This study aims to compare different types of metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) with lifestyle intervention/medical therapy (LSI/MT) for the treatment of overweight/obesity. The present and network meta-analysis (NMA) includes randomized trials. MBS was associated with a reduction of BMI, body weight, and percent weight loss, when compared to LSI/MT, and also with a significant reduction of HbA1c and a higher remission of diabetes.

Most hemoproteins display an all-α-helical fold, showing the classical three on three (3/3) globin structural arrangement characterized by seven or eight α-helical segments that form a sandwich around the heme. Over the last decade, a completely distinct class of heme-proteins called nitrobindins (Nbs), which display an all-β-barrel fold, has been identified and characterized from both structural and functional perspectives. Nbs are ten-stranded anti-parallel all-β-barrel heme-proteins found across the evolutionary ladder, from bacteria to Homo sapiens.

Invasive species have a detrimental impact on native populations, particularly in island ecosystems, and they pose a potential zoonotic and wildlife threat. Black rats () are invasive species that disrupt native flora and fauna on islands and serve as potential competent reservoirs for various pathogens and parasites. Microparasites screening was conducted in rat populations from small islands in central Italy (the Pontine Islands and Pianosa) with the aim of assessing the role of rats in maintaining infections, particularly in cases where key reservoir hosts were scarce or absent.

GATA2 deficiency is a rare disorder encompassing a broadly variable phenotype and its clinical picture is continuously evolving. Since it was first described in 2011, up to 500 patients have been reported. Here, we describe a cohort of 31 Italian patients (26 families) with molecular diagnosis of GATA2 deficiency.

Background: Despite the optimal characteristics of peat, more environmental-friendly materials are needed in the nursery sector, although these must guarantee specific quantitative and qualitative commercial standards. In the present study, we evaluated the influence of biochar and compost as peat surrogates on yield and essential oil profile of two different varieties of basil (Ocimum basilicum var. An in-depth study of the Early Pleistocene European remains of Hippopotamus has allowed the first detailed description of the incidence and types of dental alterations related to palaeopathologies and potentially linked to climatic and environmental factors. The results of a long-term qualitative and quantitative assessment highlight the importance of nutrient deficiencies on the development of dental enamel hypoplasia in Hippopotamus. Glacial cyclicity and the resulting changes in humidity and plant community structure conditioned the local environments critical for the survival of this taxon.

While it is widely recognized that purely organic molecular systems with multiple bonds undergo chemical condensation at sufficiently high pressures (from tenths to tens of GPa), the fate of organometallics at extreme conditions remains largely underexplored. We have investigated the high pressure (up to 41 GPa) chemical transformations in a simple molecular system known as nickelocene, (C5H5)2Ni, which serves as a representative example of a class of organometallics called sandwich compounds. Nickelocene decomposed above 13 GPa, at room temperature, while lower pressure thresholds have been observed at higher temperatures (295-573 K).

Currently, the leaves of the hop plant ( L.) are an unexploited and still little-investigated agricultural by-product. In our study, with the aim of exploring the metabolome of dried hop leaves (Chinook cultivar), a metabolomic approach was applied using multiple analytical tools such as SPME/GC-MS, GC-MS, PTR-ToF-MS, and NMR to identify the secondary metabolites.

Understanding the reaction mechanism of enzymes at the molecular level is generally a difficult task, since many parameters affect the turnover. Often, due to high reactivity and formation of transient species or intermediates, detailed information on enzymatic catalysis is obtained by means of model substrates. Whenever possible, it is essential to confirm a reaction mechanism based on substrate analogues or model systems by using the physiological substrates.

The chemistry and mineralogy of slabs subducted into lower mantle control slab rheology and impact the deep volatile cycle. It is known that the metamorphism of little-altered oceanic crust results in eclogite rocks with subequal proportions of garnet and clinopyroxene. With increasing pressure, these minerals react to stabilize pyrope-rich tetragonal majoritic garnet.
