The presence of microplastics (MPs), trace metals (TM) and metalloids (Ms) in surface seawater is a severe emerging issue of global concern. Information about the distribution of these pollutants is often lacking, and large-scale studies come with uncertainties because of difficult comparisons of results obtained using different methods to collect and process data. This study presents a comprehensive investigation of microplastics (MPs), trace metals (TM) and metalloids (Ms) in surface seawater during two transatlantic sampling campaigns, covering approximately 17,000 nautical miles.

Plastics have surpassed traditional materials across numerous industries due to their versatility, durability, and cost-effectiveness. However, their persistence in ecosystems, particularly in soil, presents serious environmental challenges. This narrative review builds on previous work by analysing over 300 studies on plastics in soil, with a focus on degradation and potential reuse.

Brine mining can represent a valuable non-conventional resource for the extraction of Mg, Li, B, Sr and other Trace Elements (TEs) such as Rb, Cs, whose recoveries require chemical reagents such as alkaline and acidic solutions. In a circular strategy, these required chemicals can be produced in-situ through Electrodialysis with Bipolar Membranes (EDBM). In this work, a laboratory EDBM unit was operated using real brines from Trapani saltworks to investigate, for the first time, the migration of minor and trace ions, as Li, B, Sr, Cs and Rb through ion-exchange membranes (IEMs).

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CREs) are globally considered to be a major threat to public health. National and international guidelines emphasize the importance of routine active surveillance policies to prevent their transmission. Consequently, screening for the evaluation of the status of colonization by CREs in hospitalized patients in Italy is considered essential to contain and control the spread of these microorganisms and their evolution towards infection.

The project "Experimentation of new integrated hospital-territory organizational models for the prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections: facilitated diagnostic-care pathways and offer of free targeted screening" was developed as part of the CCM 2019 programme, funded by the Italian Ministry of Health, being coordinated by the Italian National Health Institute (ISS), in collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome. Three clinical units located in Turin, Milan, and Cagliari, specialized in sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis and treatment, and three highly specialized microbiology laboratories located in Trieste, Florence, and Palermo were involved. The objectives were to develop an innovative network model for the treatment of STIs based on multidisciplinary centres with high quality of care for STIs (hub-IST) and territorial structures (spoke-IST), to plan and test integrated facilitated care pathways for STIs, to evaluate the priorities, feasibility, and sustainability of prevention interventions.

Leishmaniasis is one of the most important neglected diseases, classically characterized by three clinical forms that if left untreated can lead to skin lesions, lifelong scarring, or death depending on the parasite species. Unfortunately, treatment is unsatisfactory and the search for an improved therapy has been a priority. Gold compounds have emerged as promising candidates and among them, Au(I)bis-N-heterocyclic carbene (Au(BzTMX)) has stood out.

Mixed reality (MR) has the potential to complement numerical simulations for enhanced post-processing and integrate digital models into the daily clinical practice of healthcare professionals. In complex cardiac anatomies, the decision-making process for bioprosthesis implantation involves the challenging analysis of heart valve distribution, positioning, and sealing. This study proposes a framework to visualize computational modeling results in an immersive environment for comprehensive analysis of the geometric implications of implanted devices on human heart function.

Electrodialysis with Bipolar Membranes (EDBM) is an electro-membrane process that produces acid and base from saline solutions using electricity. In previous research, this technology has predominantly been explored at the laboratory scale, with very few examples at the pilot scale. This study investigated, for the first time, how differential pressures applied between the EDBM channels affect its performance, utilizing a semi-industrial scale pilot - the largest ever studied in the literature.

The most recurrent familial cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the presence of an abnormal number of intronic GGGGCC (G4C2) repetitions in the C9orf72 gene, which has been proposed to drive ALS/FTD pathogenesis. Recently, it has been shown that such G4C2 repetitions can fold into G-quadruplex (G4) secondary structures. These G4s have been selectively stabilized by small-molecule binders, furnishing proof of principle that targeting these non-canonical nucleic acid sequences represents a novel and effective therapeutic strategy to tackle neurodegenerative disorders.

Phosphorus (P), crucial for plant nutrition, is unevenly distributed in the Earth's crust, necessitating its supplementation in agriculture through fertilizers. However, excessive use can lead to water pollution. Our research focuses on the P adsorbing complex, investigating P release due to flooding, using 12 well-characterized soils with contrasting properties.

Strong laser pulses can control superconductivity, inducing nonequilibrium transient pairing by leveraging strong-light matter interaction. Here, we demonstrate theoretically that equilibrium ground-state phonon-mediated superconductive pairing can be affected through the vacuum fluctuating electromagnetic field in a cavity. Using the recently developed ab initio quantum electrodynamical density-functional theory approximation, we specifically investigate the phonon-mediated superconductive behavior of MgB[Formula: see text] under different cavity setups and find that in the strong light-matter coupling regime its superconducting transition temperature T[Formula: see text] can be enhanced at most by [Formula: see text]10% in an in-plane (or out-of-plane) polarized and realistic cavity via photon vacuum fluctuations.

Recently, in several locations in the province of Trapani (Sicily, Italy), olive growers have reported cases of decaying olive trees of cv. 'Nocellara del Belice', showing symptoms of defoliation, branch drying, xylem browning, and reduced production. Internal symptoms include white and brown wood rot, starting from the base of the trunk.

Mango, a tropical fruit celebrated for its delightful fragrance and high nutritional value, generates significant waste during processing, with approximately 35-60% of the fruit being discarded. However, this waste contains valuable components, such as fibre, carotenoids, polyphenols, and other bioactive compounds. In an effort to repurpose mango peel, this study dehydrated it to create mango peel powder (MPP), which was then incorporated into sourdough bread to produce functional breads with enhanced nutritional value.

The yellow-necked dry-wood termite (Fabricius, 1793) (Blattodea: Kalotermitidae) is an important pest that infests wood in Europe. An increase in attacks by has been seen in buildings and in churches in Palermo (Italy), with attacks on both structural elements and artefacts. Future climate changes are expected to lead to increasing temperatures, which will probably affect the pest status of this species, which is difficult to control.

Protein self-assemblies in the form of ordered supramolecular structures such as particulates hold great potential as new biomaterials. However, research in this field is rarely conducted under physiologically relevant conditions but such studies are crucially needed to unravel the potential use of particulates and other amyloid structures in health sciences. In this study, particulates of α-lactalbumin (ALA) were prepared at different stages of maturation by thermal incubation.

Introduction: While the economic and clinical burden of chronic diseases are well documented, their environmental impact remains poorly understood. We developed a framework to estimate the environmental impact of a disease care pathway using chronic kidney disease (CKD) as an example.
Methods: A life cycle assessment framework was developed for the CKD care pathway and validated by experts.

The Italian Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI) has developed a good clinical practice to address the challenges of treating critically ill patients in resource-limited austere environments, exacerbated by recent pandemics, natural disasters, and conflicts. The methodological approach was based on a literature review and a modified Delphi method, which involved blind voting and consensus evaluation using a Likert scale. This process was conducted over two rounds of online voting.
