Self-Interacting Dark Sectors in Supernovae Can Behave as a Relativistic Fluid.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia, Università degli Studi di Padova, Via Marzolo 8, 35131 Padova, Italy.

We revisit supernova (SN) bounds on a hidden sector consisting of millicharged particles χ and a massless dark photon. Unless the self-coupling is fine-tuned to be small, rather than exiting the SN core as a gas, the particles form a relativistic fluid and subsequent dark QED fireball, streaming out against the drag due to the interaction with matter. Novel bounds due to excessive energy deposition in the mantle of low-energy supernovae can be obtained.

The preclinical phase of Alzheimer's disease represents a crucial time window for therapeutic intervention but requires the identification of clinically relevant biomarkers that are sensitive to the effects of disease-modifying drugs. Amyloid peptide and tau proteins, the main histological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease, have been widely used as biomarkers of anti-amyloid and anti-tau drugs. However, these biomarkers do not fully capture the multiple biological pathways of the brain.

Marginal enamel fractures (MEF) are a common clinical concern in dentistry, particularly in anterior teeth. These fractures occur at the enamel margins and their etiopathogenesis involves a complex interplay of mechanical, chemical, and biological factors. The ongoing research focuses on an overview of MEF to improve the knowledge about this condition.

A high-resolution record of central Mediterranean Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs) based on the alkenone UK'37 index and planktic δ18O values for the surface-dweller G. ruber has been reconstructed across the Pliocene/Pleistocene transition at Monte San Nicola (Sicily), reference area for the GSSP (Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point) of the Gelasian Stage. Spectral analyses indicate that the SST record is predominantly paced by a cyclicity in the ~47 kyr time domain, consistent with the obliquity driven glacial-interglacial variability that is expected to dominate in the interval of relevance.

Balancing increasing demand for wood products while also maintaining forest biodiversity is a paramount challenge. Europe's Biodiversity and Forest Strategies for 2030 attempt to address this challenge. Together, they call for strict protection of 10% of land area, including all primary and old growth forests, increasing use of ecological forestry, and less reliance on monocultural plantations.

December 2024

Società per l'Epidemiologia e la Prevenzione "Giulio A. Maccacaro", Milano.

The "One Health and Citizen Science" (OHCS) project aims to provide an integrated intervention model useful for characterising the state of environmental quality, assessing population exposure to pollutants, investigating the association between environmental risk factors and health outcomes, and measuring the impacts associated with contamination and remediation scenarios. In pursuing this objective, the activation of participatory pathways and the use of risk communication strategies are envisaged.Within the OHCS project, training and discussion meetings were planned on a number of issues deemed central.

The area known as Piana di Venafro is situated between the Mainarde and Matese massifs in the extreme western Region of Molise (Southern Italy). This valley was formerly designated as Campania felix, a moniker derived from the global esteem in which its crops were held. Nowadays, the valley is traversed by numerous high-volume thoroughfares, rendering it challenging to maintain the designation of felix.

Black Holes and Gravitational Waves from Slow First-Order Phase Transitions.

Phys Rev Lett

November 2024

Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia, Università degli Studi di Padova, Via Marzolo 8, 35131 Padova, Italy.

Slow first-order phase transitions generate large inhomogeneities that can lead to the formation of primordial black holes. We show that the gravitational wave spectrum then consists of a primary component sourced by bubble collisions and a secondary one induced by large perturbations. The latter gives the dominant peak if β/H_{0}<12, impacting, in particular, the interpretation of the recent pulsar timing array data.

Scope: The emergence of post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) after SARS-CoV-2 infection underscores the critical need for preparedness in addressing future post-acute infection syndromes (PAIS), particularly those linked to epidemic outbreaks. The lack of standardized clinical and epidemiological data during the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly hindered timely diagnosis and effective treatment of PCC, highlighting the necessity of pre-emptively standardizing data collection in clinical studies to better define and manage future PAIS. In response, the Cohort Coordination Board, a consortium of European-funded COVID-19 research projects, has reviewed data from PCC studies conducted by its members.

Holopodidae is one of the three families in the order Cyrtocrinida that have extant representatives. Two genera have been described, Holopus and Cyathidium, both with extant species and fossil representatives dating back to the Cenomanian (Late Cretaceous). Eocene (Lutetian) holopodid material from the Chiampo Valley (north-eastern Italy) has recently been attributed to H.

The spectrum of the quasinormal modes of the gravitational waves emitted during the ringdown phase following the merger of two black holes is of primary importance in gravitational astronomy. However, the spectrum is extremely sensitive to small disturbances of the system, thus potentially jeopardizing the predictions of the gravitational-wave observables. We offer an analytical and intuitive explanation of such an instability and its properties based on the transfer matrix approach of quantum mechanics.

Predictive coding mechanisms facilitate detection and perceptual recognition, thereby influencing recognition judgements and, broadly, perceptual decision-making. The anterior insula (AI) has been shown to be involved in reaching a decision about discrimination and recognition, as well as to coordinate brain circuits related to reward-based learning. Yet, experimental studies in the context of recognition and decision-making, targeting this area and based on formal trial-by-trial predictive coding computational quantities, are sparse.

Simple synthesis of [Au(NHC)X] complexes utilizing aqueous ammonia: revisiting the mechanism.

Dalton Trans

December 2024

Department of Chemistry and Center for Sustainable Chemistry, Ghent University, Krijgslaan 281 (S-3), 9000 Ghent, Belgium.

Aqueous ammonia has been examined as a new weak base for the synthesis of [Au(NHC)Cl] complexes, as well as for the activation of C-H, S-H, and N-H bonds. Its low cost and mild operational conditions (in air and using technical grade solvents) make it an attractive alternative for producing gold-NHC complexes. Synthetic pathways have been investigated , assessing the role of the deprotonation and metalation steps within the reaction mechanisms.
