Dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche, Biologiche, Farmaceutiche ed Ambientali, Università degli Studi di Messina, Viale F. Stagno d'Alcontres, 31, 98166 Messina, Italy.

Ammonium ion/carboxylate ion pairing is a key interaction ubiquitous in biological systems, but amine recognition by ionizable molecular receptors, mediated by host-to-guest proton transfer, has too often been overlooked as a design element for molecular recognition. This survey will show that proton transfer mediated recognition is a powerful and versatile tool that can be made to work with different amines and diverse macrocyclic scaffolds, such as crown ethers, calixarenes or pillararenes. We will trace the history of this recognition motif since Cram's first report half a century ago down to the latest applications in supramolecular sensing, drug-delivery and materials science, highlighting along the way the impact of host-to-guest proton transfer on self-assembly and molecular recognition.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

August 2022

Dipartimento di Scienze Matematiche e Informatiche, Scienze Fisiche e Scienze della Terra, Università degli Studi di Messina, Viale Ferdinando Stagno D'Alcontres, 31-98166 Messina, Italy.

In this article, the authors report experimental results obtained for the assessment of the Ra content in 80 drinking water samples from the Calabria region, Southern Italy. The activity concentration, measured with the Perkin Elmer Tricarb 4910 TR Liquid Scintillation Counter (LSC) setup, was compared with the reference values reported in the Italian Legislative Decree 28/2016 in order to evaluate any possible radiological health hazards for the population in terms of Ra content due to the ingestion of the investigated drinking water. The obtained results put in evidence that the average Ra specific activity is lower than the LSC minimum detectable activity (MDA) in all cases, thus, excluding any radiological risk.

Dipartimento di Scienze Matematiche e Informatiche, Scienze Fisiche e Scienze della Terra, Università degli Studi di Messina, Viale F. Stagno d'Alcontres 31, 98166 Messina, Italy.

We investigate by Monte Carlo simulations a mixture of particles with competing interactions (hard-sphere two-Yukawa, HSTY) and hard spheres (HS), with same diameters and a square-well (SW) cross attraction. In a recent study [G. Munaò , , 2022, , 2027-2039], we have analysed situations-in terms of relative concentration and attraction strength-where HS promote the formation of clusters involving particles of both species under thermodynamic conditions that would not allow for clustering of the pure HSTY fluid.

Philadelphia-negative chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) represent a group of hematological disorders that are traditionally considered as indistinct slow progressing conditions; still, a subset of cases shows a rapid evolution towards myelofibrotic bone marrow failure. Specific abnormalities in the megakaryocyte lineage seem to play a central role in this evolution, especially in the bone marrow fibrosis but also in the induction of myeloproliferation. In this review, we analyze the current knowledge of prognostic factors of MPNs related to their evolution to myelofibrotic bone marrow failure.
