The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the essential physiological functions of the skin microbiota in human health and diseases. The main characteristics of the normal microbiota in the different anatomical sites have been reported in relation to the main factors, such as the effect of age, on its composition and stability for the eubiosis condition. Moreover, the present overview analyzed the functions and composition and the correct functionality of the skin microbiota in the light of current knowledge.

An untargeted shot-gun approach is described for the ultra-high-resolution analysis of fennel proteins by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) combined with a home-made Matlab search algorithm. The first step of the proposed bioinformatic strategy was the development of a custom-made fennel protein database, starting from the well-known, on-line available, protein NCBI database, under organism, consisting of 231 total proteins. Partial and redundant forms of proteins, repeatedly included in the official NCBI database under different codes, were removed.

The specific traumatic mechanism that leads to the formation of the butterfly fragment is debated in literature. The aim of the present study is to analyze the biomechanics of fractures with a "butterfly" fragment, using a software that simulates the movement of the lines of force (and related iso-displacement points) that occur on the bone, when traumatic forces are applied on it. We have shown that the formation of the butterfly fragment derives from the application of three forces (compression, torsion and bending) with the bending force that acts by increasing the curvature of the long bone.

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies can play a key role in preventing, detecting, and monitoring epidemics. In this paper, we provide an overview of the recently published literature on the COVID-19 pandemic in four strategic areas: (1) triage, diagnosis, and risk prediction; (2) drug repurposing and development; (3) pharmacogenomics and vaccines; and (4) mining of the medical literature. We highlight how AI-powered health care can enable public health systems to efficiently handle future outbreaks and improve patient outcomes.

Background: Osteoporosis is an asymptomatic disease of high prevalence and incidence, leading to bone fractures burdened by high mortality and disability, mainly when several subsequent fractures occur. A fragility fracture predictive model, Artificial Intelligence-based, to identify dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) variables able to characterise those patients who are prone to further fractures called Bone Strain Index, was evaluated in this study.
Methods: In a prospective, longitudinal, multicentric study 172 female outpatients with at least one vertebral fracture at the first observation were enrolled.

A rapid shot-gun method by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) is proposed for the characterization of fennel proteins. After enzymatic digestion with trypsin, few microliters of extract were analyzed by direct infusion in positive ion mode. A custom-made non-redundant fennel-specific proteome database was derived from the well-known NCBI database; additional proteins belonging to recognized allergenic sources (celery, carrot, parsley, birch, and mugwort) were also included in our database, since patients hypersensitive to these plants could also suffer from fennel allergy.

Objectives: Clinical observation suggests that early acute respiratory distress syndrome induced by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 may be "atypical" due to a discrepancy between a relatively unaffected static respiratory system compliance and a significant hypoxemia. This would imply an "atypical" response to the positive end-expiratory pressure.

Objectives: The function of NOTCH signaling (oncogenic or oncosuppressive) remains controversial in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). The purpose of this work is to investigate the role of NOTCH pathway in HNSCC prognosis.
Methods: Immunohistochemical NOTCH1 and HES1 expression was jointly evaluated and correlated with other NOTCH1 targets, p21 (WAF1/Cip1) and Cyclin D1, using an unbiased cohort of 372 surgically treated HPV-negative HNSCC patients.

Background And Aims: The MARS post-marketing, observational study evaluates glecaprevir/pibrentasvir in a large population of Italian patients who are infected with HCV.
Patients And Methods: Achievement of SVR12 was the primary endpoint in the overall population and by subpopulations of interest (treatment-naïve and treatment-experienced patients, subjects infected with different HCV genotype/sub-genotype, cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients, patients with different severity of fibrosis, patients with an APRI score ≥1, subjects with comorbidities, HIV-coinfected patients, elderly patients and people who use drugs). Safety and quality of life (assessed by SF-36 and Work Productivity and Activity Impairment) were also evaluated.

This species has low tolerance to chestnut gall wasp ( Yasumatsu), which is a pest that was accidentally introduced into Europe in early 2000 and devastated forest and orchard trees. Resistance to the gall wasp was found in the hybrid cultivar 'Bouche de Bétizac' ( × ) and studied by developing genetic linkage maps using a population derived from a cross between 'Bouche de Bétizac' and the susceptible cultivar 'Madonna' ().
