When main-sequence stars expand into red giants, they are expected to engulf close-in planets. Until now, the absence of planets with short orbital periods around post-expansion, core-helium-burning red giants has been interpreted as evidence that short-period planets around Sun-like stars do not survive the giant expansion phase of their host stars. Here we present the discovery that the giant planet 8 Ursae Minoris b orbits a core-helium-burning red giant.

This paper reports the synthesis, structure, photophysical, and optoelectronic properties of five eight-coordinate Europium(III) ternary complexes, namely, [Eu(hth)(L)], bearing 4,4,5,5,6,6,6-heptafluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-hexanedione (hth) as a sensitizer and L = HO (), dpso (diphenyl sulphoxide, ), dpsoCH (4,4'-dimethyl diphenyl sulfoxide, ), dpsoCl (bis(4-chlorophenyl)sulphoxide, ), and tppo (triphenylphosphine oxide, ) as co-ligands. The NMR and the crystal structure analysis confirmed the eight-coordinate structures of the complexes in solution and in a solid state. Upon UV-excitation on the absorption band of the β-diketonate ligand hth, all complexes showed the characteristic bright red luminescence of the Europium ion.

NPM1-mutated acute myeloid leukaemia (NPM1 AML) represents a mostly favourable/intermediate risk disease that benefits from allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in case of measurable residual disease (MRD) relapse or persistence after induction chemotherapy. Although the negative prognostic role of pre-HSCT MRD is established, no recommendations are available for the management of peri-transplant molecular failure (MF). Based on the efficacy data of venetoclax (VEN)-based treatment in NPM1 AML older patients, we retrospectively analysed the off-label combination of VEN plus azacitidine (AZA) as bridge-to-transplant strategy in 11 NPM1 MRD-positive fit AML patients.

Iron(II) -pyrazolilpyridyl (bpp-R) complexes [Fe(bpp-R)](X)·solvent, R = substituent and X = anion, can undergo a spin transition from high ( = 2, HS) to low spin ( = 0, LS), being spin crossover (SCO) in the solid state. The distortion of the octahedral coordination environment around the metal centre is governed by crystal packing, the intermolecular interactions among the substituent R of the bpp-R ligands, the anion X, and the co-crystallized solvent, and this modulates the SCO behaviour. In this work, an innovative multivariate approach, through the combination of the chemometric tools Principal Component Analysis and Partial Least Squares regression, was applied on the coordination bond distances and angles and selected torsional angles of the available HS structures.

Background: Over the past decades, the improvements in the diagnostic power and availability of non-invasive cardiac imaging techniques have led to a decline of right heart catheterization (RHC) performance. However, RHC remains the gold standard for diagnosing pulmonary hypertension and an essential tool for the evaluation of patient candidacy to heart transplantation.
Methods: This survey was carried out jointly by the Young Committee of GISE, with the support of the SICI-GISE Society, and the ICOT group, with the aim of evaluating how the interventional cardiology community perform RHC.

Elementary events that determine photochemical outcomes and molecular functionalities happen on the femtosecond and subfemtosecond timescales. Among the most ubiquitous events are the nonadiabatic dynamics taking place at conical intersections. These facilitate ultrafast, nonradiative transitions between electronic states in molecules that can outcompete slower relaxation mechanisms such as fluorescence.

Negative Symptoms (NS) severely affect real-world functioning also in young people at UHR for developing psychosis. However, longitudinal research on beneficial effects of specialized treatments for NS in UHR people is still relatively scarce and inconclusive, especially in real-world care settings. The aims of the present research were: (1) to evaluate the longitudinal stability of NS levels in young UHR subjects treated within a specialized "Early Intervention in Psychosis" (EIP) program across a 2-year follow-up period, and (2) to investigate any relevant association of NS changes with the specific treatment components offered within the EIP program.

The permeability of fault zones plays a significant role on the distribution of georesources and on seismogenesis in the brittle upper crust, where both natural and induced seismicity are often associated with fluid migration and overpressure. Detailed models of the permeability structure of fault zones are thus necessary to refine our understanding of natural fluid pathways and of the mechanisms leading to fluid compartmentalization and possible overpressure in the crust. Fault zones commonly contain complex internal architectures defined by the spatial juxtaposition of "brittle structural facies" (BSF), which progressively and continuously form and evolve during faulting and deformation.

The importance of prompt evaluation and care of the newborn is essential for reducing neonatal mortality, which represents a major cause of loss in camelids. This study investigated the blood gases, acid-base and electrolyte profiles in healthy dromedary calves during the first 3 weeks of life, assessing possible associations with age. Twenty-one dromedary camel calves aged 1 to 21 days were sampled, and venous whole blood analyzed through a VETSTAT® analyzer.

Bis-squaramide receptors L1-L4 bearing a dansyl moiety were synthesised and their potential applications as fluorescent probes towards non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs naproxen and ketoprofen was investigated. A detailed photophysical characterization in CHCN/DMSO solution (9 : 1 v/v) was conducted and demonstrated that the two macrocyclic receptors L1 and L2 show good sensitivity towards ketoprofen with an ON-OFF fluorescent response, while the two open chain receptors L3 and L4 behave similarly with the three guests considered. DFT theoretical calculations carried out on L2 and L4 as model receptors allowed to propose a possible coordination mode towards the guests.

Monitoring of their time-resolved dynamics remains a formidable experimental challenge. In this study, we simulate the photoinduced S to S non-adiabatic dynamics of cyclooctatetraene (COT), involving multiple CIs with relaxation times in good agreement with experiment.

Azobenzene is a prototype and a building block of a class of molecules of extreme technological interest as molecular photo-switches. We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of its response to irradiation with light across the UV to x-ray spectrum. The study of valence and inner shell photo-ionization and excitation processes combined with measurement of valence photoelectron-photoion coincidence and mass spectra across the core thresholds provides a detailed insight into the site- and state-selected photo-induced processes.

The recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for novel point-of-care devices to be promptly used for a rapid and reliable large screening analysis of several biomarkers like genetic sequences and antibodies. Currently, one of the main limitations of rapid tests is the high percentage of false negatives in the presence of variants and, in particular for the Omicron one. We demonstrate in this work the detection of SARS-CoV-2 and the Omicron variant with a cost-effective silicon nanosensor enabling high sensitivity, selectivity, and fast response.

Molecular switches which can be triggered by light to interconvert between two or more well-defined conformation differing in their chemical or physical properties are fundamental for the development of materials with on-demand functionalities. Recently, a novel molecular switch based on a the azodicarboxamide core has been reported. It exhibits a volume-conserving conformational change upon excitation, making it a promising candidate for embedding in confined environments.
