Article Synopsis
  • Brown adipocytes have a unique structure and genetic profile, including the expression of the P2RX5 receptor, whose function is not well understood.
  • A study involving P2RX5 knockout male mice showed that the absence of this receptor leads to less differentiation of brown adipocytes and reduced browning of adipose tissue.
  • Additionally, activating the P2RX5 receptor can help combat obesity by promoting brown adipose tissue activity, suggesting it could be a potential target for treating metabolic diseases.

Background: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have a reduced life expectancy and high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality as compared to the general population. A number of possible factors for the atherogenesis in this disease have been described, such as homocysteine, altered serum levels of selected lipoproteins and treatment. Recent findings indicate that the systemic inflammation may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis and confer an additional risk for cardiovascular death among patients with RA.

[Galenus Latinus, 1490-1533].

April 2007

Facoltà di Medicina e Chirurgia, Università degli Studi di Ancona, I.

This article provides an examination of the Latin complete editions of Galen, from 1490 to 1528, which are not all pointed out and described by Richard Durling in his census published in 1961, in the Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes. They present the first large circulation of Galen in the Renassaince, which was in Latin, not in Greek, as well as the constitution of the Galenic corpus. At first it was formed by Medieval translations.

Phase-contrast microtomography of thin biomaterials.

J Mater Sci Mater Med

September 2004

Istituto di Scienze Fisiche, Università degli Studi di Ancona and INFM, Via P. Ranieri 65, 60131 Ancona, Italy.

Phase-contrast microtomography, performed at the beamline ID 22 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF, Grenoble, France), is demonstrated for high-resolution 3-D imaging of a hydroxyapatite sample. The technique, which relies on phase contrast imaging, gives the possibility to observe features inside samples with negligible absorption contrast. The positive results obtained suggest a possible future investigation of the influence of the distribution of pores and defects inside biomaterial coatings, on the growth of osteoblast cells.

[Surgical treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma].

Ann Ital Chir

June 2004

Dipartimento delle Malattie Digestive e di Chirurgia Generale, Clinica Chirurgica Generale e Terapia Chirurgica, Università degli Studi di Ancona, Torrette.

Being the excellent prognosis, the extension of the thyroidectomy in the surgical management of differentiated thyroid carcinomas is still controversial: some authors recommend total thyroidectomy for all patients, others suggest a conservative approach, that guarantee the same good prognosis but is associated with fewer complications. Even the cervical lymph node dissection is discussed, both regarding to the indications and the extension. The authors reported a retrospective review of their experience of the last 10 years on 75 patients operated for differentiated thyroid cancer, 61 for papillary carcinoma and 14 for follicular carcinoma; 18 of them were men and 57 females, with a mean age of 48.

Adjuvant 5-fluorouracil (5FU) and levamisole (Lev) have been considered standard treatment for stage III colon cancer patients. However, the uncertain contribution of Lev to the efficacy of treatment has led many oncologists to prefer the 5FU/leucovorin combination. To establish the role of Lev, we conducted a randomized trial comparing the 5FU/Lev combination with 5FU alone in patients with Dukes' C colon cancer.

Hox and paraHox genes in bivalve molluscs.

Gene

October 2003

Istituto di Biologia e Genetica, Facoltà di Scienze, Università degli Studi di Ancona, via Brecce Bianche, I-60131 Ancona, Italy.

In this study, we sought the presence and analysed the sequences of the Hox and ParaHox genes in bivalve molluscs. The clustered Hox genes play a central role in anterior-posterior axial patterning in bilaterian metazoa, whereas the ParaHox gene cluster is a paralogue (evolutionary sister) of the Hox cluster. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based approaches, we isolated nine different sequences in five species belonging to three of the main bivalve subclasses: Ensis ensis and Tapes philippinarum (Heterodonta), Pecten maximus and Mytilus galloprovincialis (Pteriomorphia), and Yoldia eightsi (Protobranchia).

Mercury (Hg) is a persistent soil pollutant that affects soil microbial activity. We monitored the changes in soil microbial biomass and activity of enzymes, including alkaline phosphatase, arylsulfatase, fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolytic activity, and o-diphenol oxidase (o-DPO) in three soils contaminated with different concentrations of Hg. Increasing levels of Hg, from 0.

Biphosphonates are a large class of drugs which inhibits the resorbing activity of osteoclasts. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of topical application of the biphosphonate alendronate on the integration process of endosseus implants placed in a partially edentulous patient. After incision and elevation of a mucoperiosteal flap and carrying out the osteotomy, 2 SLA implants 10 mm long and 3.

Elderly acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a rare condition associated with low complete remission (CR) rate and short survival. In order to improve these results, we evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of Daunoxome, a liposomal daunorubicin, exhibiting toxicity profile and pharmacokinetic indices better than standard daunorubicin. In total, 15 consecutive patients with nonmature ALL were enrolled on a prospective phase II study.

Background: In the last years the prevalence of childhood obesity has notably increased. The treatment of this condition is very difficult, because of the frequent relapses. The aim of our study was to examine the long-term outcomes of different dietary treatments (1200 or 1400 calories or chetogenic diet, derived from the protein sparing modified fast) in children and adolescents with primary obesity, in order to show factors predictive of the long-term success.

Oral implantology is considered an acceptable treatment modality to replace missing teeth when a recipient site with a sufficient horizontal and vertical bone volume exists. Guided bone regeneration is based on the principle of selective exclusion of non osteogenic cells from the bony defect by a barrier membrane. Several supporting systems of the barrier membrane have been successfully used to treat non space-mantaining de-fects.

Imaging modalities for identifying the origin of regional musculoskeletal pain.

Best Pract Res Clin Rheumatol

February 2003

Clinica Reumatologica, Università degli Studi di Ancona, Ospedale A. Murri, Via dei Colli, 52. 60035 Jesi (Ancona), Italy.

Regional musculoskeletal pain is one of the most common complaints in daily rheumatological practice. Conventional radiology remains the cornerstone of diagnostic imaging in these patients despite the advent of new, fascinating imaging techniques. Ultrasonography may have a relevant impact on final diagnosis or therapeutic choices.

The aim of this pictorial essay was to demonstrate the diagnostic efficacy of high-resolution sonography in detecting bone erosions in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis. Standard X-Ray of the feet did not reveal clearly evident erosions. Ultrasonography was able to detect the presence of bone erosions of the metatarsal heads of both the first toes and of the V toe of the left foot.
