The origin of stereocontrol in ring opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic lactide (rac-LA) promoted by achiral aluminium-based catalysts has been explained through DFT calculations combined with a molecular descriptor (%V) and the activation strain model (ASM-NEDA) analysis. The proposed chain end control (CEC) model suggests that the ligand framework adopts a chiral configuration mimicking the enantiomorphic site control (ESC) while also incorporating control of the last inserted monomer unit. It is found that the ligand wrapping mode around the aluminium centre is dictated by the monomer configuration (R,R-LA and S,S-LA).

Pregnancy and lactation-associated osteoporosis is a rare form of osteoporosis occurring during late pregnancy and early lactation, featuring fragility fractures, primarily involving the vertebral bodies and leading to back pain. Its management involves osteoporosis treatment, complicated by potential drug-related dangerous effects on the fetus. Nevertheless, many controversies remain regarding diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options.

Obesity, a prevalent and multifactorial disease, is linked to a range of metabolic abnormalities, including insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and chronic inflammation. These imbalances not only contribute to cardiometabolic diseases but also play a significant role in cancer pathogenesis. The rising prevalence of obesity underscores the need to investigate dietary strategies for effective weight management for individuals with overweight or obesity and cancer.

Background: Considering differences in body composition and inflammatory status between sexes, as well as recent recommendations advocating for personalized dietary approaches, this study aimed to explore how sex influences weight loss, changes in body composition, and inflammatory status in subjects with grade I and II obesity undergoing a 45-day of the Very Low-Energy Ketogenic Therapy (VLEKT).
Methods: Participants (21 premenopausal females and 21 males), included in the study adhered to the 45-day of the VLEKT and underwent assessments of anthropometric parameters (weight, height, body mass index-BMI -, and waist circumference), body composition via bioelectrical impedance analysis, and inflammatory status measured by high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels at baseline and post-intervention.
Results: At baseline, premenopausal females and males did not differ in BMI (p = 0.
Obesity is a chronic disease associated with increased morbidity and mortality and reduced quality of life. Pharmacotherapy can be associated with life style changes in increasing and maintaining weight loss and ameliorating obesity-related complications and comorbidities. In patients affected by obesity and uncontrolled obesity-associated complications or high degrees of BMI (> 40 Kg/m), metabolic bariatric surgery can be a valid therapeutic option.

The 2022 American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) updated the indications for metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS), replacing the previous guidelines established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) over 30 years ago. The evidence supporting these updated guidelines has been strengthened to assist metabolic and bariatric surgeons, nutritionists, and other members of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), as well as patients. This study aims to assess the level of evidence and the strength of recommendations compared to the previously published criteria.

This work introduces a novel electrolyte comprising lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt dissolved in bio-based γ-valerolactone (GVL) for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Moreover, a simple and sustainable aqueous-based recycling approach for recovering the imide-based lithium salt is proposed. Beyond the sustainable origin of the GVL solvent, this electrolyte exhibits reduced flammability risk, characterized by a flash point of 136 °C, along with favorable transport properties (conductivity of 6.

Background And Purpose: Cisplatin-induced sensorineural hearing loss is a significant clinical challenge. Although the potential effects of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) have previously been investigated in some ototoxicity models, its efficacy in cisplatin-induced hearing loss remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of recombinant human BDNF (rhBDNF) in protecting cells against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity.

Electrically conductive hydrogels (ECHs) combine the electrical properties of conductive materials with the unique features of hydrogels. They are attractive for various biomedical applications due to their smart response to electrical fields. Owing to their distinctive properties, such as biocompatibility, thermosensitivity and self-assembling behaviour, Pluronics can be adopted for the generation of hydrogels for biomedical applications.

The escalating global prevalence of bariatric procedures necessitates an enhanced focus on optimizing perioperative care for improved patient outcomes. This study focuses on the implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Bariatric Surgery (ERABS) protocols in Italian bariatric centers to optimize perioperative care. An online survey comprising 19 items was conducted in October 2023, targeting managing surgeons in 139 registered bariatric centers.

The role of the exact Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange in determining the band gap and other properties of defects in crystalline solids is investigated. Two defects in diamond, VHd1 and VHq1 (one first neighbour of the vacancy is saturated with hydrogen, and the three unpaired electrons combine to give a quadruplet, 3 spin up, or a doublet, two spin up and one down), are used as test cases. The results obtained with a gradient corrected functional, PBE, one range separate hybrid, HSE06, two full range hybrids, B3LYP and PBE0, and the Hartree-Fock Hamiltonian are compared.

Dyslipidemia is one of the most important risk factors for the development of atherosclerotic disease and its control, through well-proven therapies, allows an optimal risk management over time. LDL-cholesterol targets are well defined by international guidelines and based on individual cardiovascular risk. As guidelines evolve, also laboratory reports need to do the same, including lipid reference values by cardiovascular risk classes, to avoid misunderstandings and inappropriate lipid-lowering therapy withdrawal.

Light-dependent fatty acid photodecarboxylases (FAPs) hold significant potential for biotechnology, due to their capability to produce alka(e)nes directly from the corresponding (un)saturated natural fatty acids requiring light as the only reagent. This study expands the family of FAPs through cavity-based enzyme discovery methods. Thirty enzyme candidates with potential photodecarboxylation activity were identified by matching the cavities of four related template structures against the Protein Data Bank's flavoproteins, a library of proteins identified via the Foldseek Search Server, and homology models of sequences resulting from BLAST.

The electrospinning process is an effective technique for creating micro- and nanofibers from synthetic and natural polymers, with significant potential for biomedical applications and drug delivery systems due to their high drug-loading capacity, large surface area, and tunable release times. Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) stands out for its excellent thermo-mechanical properties, biodegradability, and bioabsorbability. Electrospun PLLA nanofibrous structures have been extensively investigated as wound dressings, sutures, drug delivery carriers, and tissue engineering scaffolds.
