Tissue engineering (TE) is a branch of regenerative medicine with enormous potential to regenerate damaged tissues using synthetic grafts such as scaffolds. Polymers and bioactive glasses (BGs) are popular materials for scaffold production because of their tunable properties and ability to interact with the body for effective tissue regeneration. Due to their composition and amorphous structure, BGs possess a significant affinity with the recipient's tissue.

Iron(II) -pyrazolilpyridyl (bpp-R) complexes [Fe(bpp-R)](X)·solvent, R = substituent and X = anion, can undergo a spin transition from high ( = 2, HS) to low spin ( = 0, LS), being spin crossover (SCO) in the solid state. The distortion of the octahedral coordination environment around the metal centre is governed by crystal packing, the intermolecular interactions among the substituent R of the bpp-R ligands, the anion X, and the co-crystallized solvent, and this modulates the SCO behaviour. In this work, an innovative multivariate approach, through the combination of the chemometric tools Principal Component Analysis and Partial Least Squares regression, was applied on the coordination bond distances and angles and selected torsional angles of the available HS structures.

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a rare anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, characterized by asthma, eosinophilia and granulomatous or vasculitic involvement of several organs. The diagnosis and management of EGPA are often challenging and require an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. Current practice relies on recommendations and guidelines addressing the management of ANCA-associated vasculitis and not specifically developed for EGPA.

Extended risk stratification and optimal management of patients with a permanently increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) is becoming increasingly important. There are several clinical conditions where the risk of arrhythmic death is present albeit only transient. As an example, patients with depressed left ventricular function have a high risk of SCD that may be only transient when there is a significant recovery of function.

The tetranuclear iron(III) compounds [Fe(μ-O)(μ-L)] (-) were obtained by reaction of FeCl with the shortened salen-type NO tetradentate Schiff bases -(salicylidene)--Z-phenylmethanediamine HL (Z = NO, Cl and OMe, respectively), where the one-carbon bridge between the two iminic nitrogen donor atoms guide preferentially to the formation of oligonuclear species, and the position of the substituent Z on the central phenyl ring selectively drives towards Fe bis-oxido clusters. All compounds show a flat almost-symmetric butterfly-like conformation of the {Fe(μ-O)} core, surrounded by the four Schiff base ligands, as depicted by both the X-ray molecular structures of and and the optimized geometries of all derivatives as obtained by UM06/6-311G(d) DFT calculations. The strength of the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling constants between the iron(III) ions varies among the three derivatives, despite their magnetic cores remain structurally almost unvaried, as well as the coordination of the metal ions, with a distorted octahedral environment for the two-body iron ions, Fe, and a pentacoordination with trigonal bipyramidal geometry for the two-wing iron ions, Fe.

We used humic and fulvic acids extracted from digestate to formulate nanohybrids with potential applications in agronomy. In order to obtain a synergic co-release of plant-beneficial agents, we functionalized with humic substances two inorganic matrixes: hydroxyapatite (Ca₁₀(PO₄)₆(OH)₂, HP) and silica (SiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs). The former is a potential controlled-release fertilizer of P, and the latter has a beneficial effect on soil and plants.

Hyperferritinaemia is a common laboratory finding that is often associated with metabolic dysfunction and fatty liver. Metabolic hyperferritinaemia reflects alterations in iron metabolism that facilitate iron accumulation in the body and is associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic and liver diseases. Genetic variants that modulate iron homeostasis and tissue levels of iron are the main determinants of serum levels of ferritin in individuals with metabolic dysfunction, raising the hypothesis that iron accumulation might be implicated in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and the related organ damage.

Ti6Al4V titanium alloy (Ti-alloy) sleeved ceramic heads have become widely used in revision surgery when the hip stem is left in situ. This solution guarantees a new junction between the bore of the ceramic head and the Ti-alloy sleeve, regardless of any possible, slight surface damage to the Ti-alloy taper of the stem. However, this solution introduces an additional Ti-alloy/Ti-alloy interface pairing, which is potentially susceptible to mechanically assisted crevice corrosion.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations allow us to reproduce the SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) spectra of molecules adsorbed on nanostructured metal surfaces and extract the most information this spectroscopy is potentially able to provide. The latter point mainly concerns the anchoring mechanism and the bond strength between molecule and metal as well as the structural and electronic modifications of the adsorbed molecule. These findings are of fundamental importance for the application of this spectroscopic technique.
