Center for Memory Disturbances, Laboratory of Clinical Neurochemistry, Section of Neurology, Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Perugia, Perugia, 06129, Italy.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most frequent neurodegenerative disorder worldwide. The great variability in disease evolution and the incomplete understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying AD make it difficult to predict when a patient will convert from prodromal stage to dementia. We hypothesize that metabolic alterations present at the level of the brain could be reflected at a systemic level in blood serum of patients, and that these alterations could be used as prognostic biomarkers.

Mechanisms underlying CSD initiation implicated by genetic mouse models of migraine.

J Headache Pain

January 2025

Department of Neurology, University of Utah, 383 Colorow Drive, Salt Lake City, UT, 84108, USA.

A key unanswered question in migraine neurobiology concerns the mechanisms that make the brain of migraineurs susceptible to cortical spreading depression (CSD, a spreading depolarization that underlies migraine aura and may trigger the migraine pain mechanisms). Important insights into this question can be obtained by studying the mechanisms of facilitation of CSD initiation in genetic mouse models of the disease. These models, all generated from families with hereditary migraine, allow the investigation of the functional consequences of disease-causing mutations at the molecular, cellular, synaptic and neural circuit levels.

Validating the Accuracy of Parkinson's Disease Clinical Diagnosis: A UK Brain Bank Case-Control Study.

Ann Neurol

January 2025

Research Unit of Neurology, Neurophysiology and Neurobiology, Department of Medicine and Surgery, Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, Rome, Italy.

Objective: Despite diagnostic criteria refinements, Parkinson's disease (PD) clinical diagnosis still suffers from a not satisfying accuracy, with the post-mortem examination as the gold standard for diagnosis. Seminal clinicopathological series highlighted that a relevant number of patients alive-diagnosed with idiopathic PD have an alternative post-mortem diagnosis. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of PD comparing the in-vivo clinical diagnosis with the post-mortem diagnosis performed through the pathological examination in 2 groups.

Introduction: Altered vascular microcirculation is recognized as a risk factor for anastomotic leakage (AL) in colorectal surgery. However, few studies evaluated its impact on AL using different devices, with heterogeneous results. The present study reported the initial experience measuring gut microcirculatory density and flow with the aid of incidence dark-field (IDF) videomicroscopy (Cytocam, Braedius, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) comparing its operative outcome using a propensity score matching (PSM) model based on age, gender, and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI).

Lateralised overgrowth (LO) is characterised by the asymmetric increase in the size of any part of the body exceeding 10% compared with the unaffected contralateral one. LO is a key feature in various syndromic overgrowth disorders, such as Beckwith-Wiedemann spectrum and -related overgrowth spectrum (PROS). However, it can also present as isolated (ILO).

Background: Anti-CD19 CAR T-cells have revolutionized outcomes in relapsed/refractory large B-cell lymphomas. Long-term follow-up underscored the role of hematological toxicity in non-relapse mortality, largely driven by infections, leading to the development of the CAR-HEMATOTOX (HT) score for predicting neutropenia. The European scientific community (EHA/EBMT) later reached a consensus, defining a new entity: immune effector cell-associated hematotoxicity (ICAHT).

Direct photochemical conversion of CO2 into a single carbon-based product currently represents one of the major issues in the catalysis of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). In this work, we demonstrate that the combination of an organic photosensitizer with a heptacoordinated iron(II) complex allows to attain a noble-metal-free photochemical system capable of efficient and selective conversion of CO2 into CO upon light irradiation in the presence of N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA) and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) as the electron and proton donor, respectively, with unprecedented performances (ΦCO up to 36%, TONCO > 1000, selectivity > 99%). As shown by transient absorption spectroscopy studies, this can be achieved thanks to the fast rates associated with the electron transfer from the photogenerated reduced dye to the catalyst, which protect the dye from parallel degradation pathways ensuring its stability along the photochemical reaction.

The sequestration of carbon dioxide using carbonic anhydrase (CA) is one of the most effective methods for mitigating global warming. The burning of fossil fuels releases large quantities of flue gas; because of its high temperature and of the alkaline conditions required for CaCO precipitation in the mineralization process, thermo-alkali-stable CAs are needed. In this context, Manyumwa et al.

Mechanisms of CO oxidation on high entropy spinels.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

January 2025

CNR-Istituto Officina dei Materiali, TASC, Trieste, Italy.

The CO oxidation reaction on (Co,Mg,Mn,Ni,Zn)(Al,Co,Cr,Fe,Mn)O and (Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni)O high entropy spinel oxides was studied for what concerns its mechanism by means of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In the (Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni)O high entropy spinel, CO oxidation starts at 150 °C, and complete conversion to CO is obtained at 300 °C. For the (Co,Mg,Mn,Ni,Zn)(Al,Co,Cr,Fe,Mn)O spinel oxides, in contrast, the reaction starts at 200 °C, and complete conversion needs temperatures of the order of 350 °C.

Highly sensitized (HS) patients in need of kidney transplantation (KTx) typically spend a longer time waiting for compatible kidneys, are unlikely to receive an organ offer, and are at increased risk of antibody-mediated rejection (AMR). Desensitization using imlifidase, which is more rapid and removes total body immunoglobulin G (IgG) to a greater extent than other methods, enables transplantation to occur between HLA-incompatible (HLAi) donor-recipient pairs and allows patients to have greater access to KTx. However, when the project was launched there was limited data and clinical experience with desensitization in general and with imlifidase specifically.

Gastric cancer (GC), one of the tumours with the highest mortality worldwide, is not a homogeneous disease, showing different features according to location, macroscopic aspect, histotype and molecular alterations. Adenocarcinoma is the most frequent epithelial GC (95%), the remaining 5% comprising rare epithelial tumours with their peculiarities, behaviour and incidence <6 cases/100,000/year. Due to the low number of cases, many aspects must be elucidated in this context.
