This work challenges the conventional approach of using NdF lifetime changes for evaluating the experimental Nd → Yb energy transfer rate and efficiency. Using near-infrared (NIR) emitting Nd:Yb mixed-metal coordination polymers (CPs), synthesized via solvent-free thermal grinding, we demonstrate that the Nd [H → I] → Yb [F → F] pathway, previously overlooked, dominates energy transfer due to superior energy resonance and -level selection rule compatibility. This finding upends the conventional focus on the Nd [F → I] → Yb [F → F] transition pathway.

The reactive spark plasma sintering (R-SPS) method was compared in this work with the two-step SHS-SPS route, based on the combination of the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) with the SPS process, for the fabrication of dense (HfMoTiTaNb)B-SiC and (HfMoTiTaZr)B-SiC ceramics. A multiphase and inhomogeneous product, containing various borides, was obtained at 2000 °C/20 min by R-SPS from transition metals, BC, and Si. In contrast, if the same precursors were first reacted by SHS and then processed by SPS under the optimized condition of 1800 °C/20 min, the desired ceramics were successfully attained.

The MONITOOL project (2017-2023) was carried out to describe the relationships between total dissolved and labile metal concentrations measured in spot water samples and in concurrently deployed Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGTs) passive samplers, respectively. The ultimate aim was to adapt existing marine metal Environmental Quality Standards (EQS ) for DGTs, enabling their use in the context of the European Directives (the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD)). Time-integrated metal concentrations provided by DGTs, representing several days, are an advantage compared to conventional spot sampling, especially in highly dynamic systems, such as transitional waters.

Long afterglow phosphors constitute an emerging class of compounds with wide application in several fields, from photonic to dosimetry, solar energy storage and photocatalysis. In this study, we synthesized and thoroughly characterized a new class of persistent emitting materials, CaGaO: xBi, yZn, zTb. Through the utilization of X-ray and Raman spectroscopy, as well as optical measurements including static and time-resolved luminescence, thermoluminescence, and phosphorescence, the effects of the Tb concentration on the optical and structural properties of the material has been deeply studied.

In this investigation, a multifunctional visible-light TX-based photosensitizer containing a siloxane moiety (TXS) was designed with a good overall yield of 54%. The addition of a siloxane moiety enabled the incorporation of a TX photosensitizer into a siloxane network by photoinduced sol-gel chemistry, thus avoiding its release. Both liquid H and solid-state Si NMR measurements undeniably confirmed the formation of photoacids resulting from the photolysis of the TXS/electron acceptor molecule (Iodonium salt), which promoted the photoinduced hydrolysis/condensation of the trimethoxysilane groups of TXS, with a high degree of condensation of its inorganic network.

We numerically study the fluid dynamics of oil tamponade in models of vitrectomized eyes prompted by a subset of daily activities corresponding to movements on the horizontal plane with the patient in a standing position. Bulk flow features are related to near-wall flow topology and transport at the retinal surface through a wall shear-stress-based analysis. Proliferative VitreoRetinopathy (PVR) is the leading cause of retinal re-detachment occurring in about 20% of all cases due to the accumulation of inflammatory cells in discrete retinal regions.

Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the absorption spectra (in the near-infrared, visible, and first UV range) of the two most probable eumelanin tetrameric molecules exhibiting either a linear open-chain or a cyclic porphyrine-like configuration. In order to simulate a realistic molecular system, an implicit solvent model is used in our calculations to mimic the effect of the solvated environment around the eumelanin molecule. Although the presence of solvent is found not to significantly affect the absorption pattern of both molecules, the onset of the spectra are shifted toward higher energies, especially for the linear tetramer.

The transition to farming brought on a series of important changes in human society, lifestyle, diet and health. The human bioarchaeology of the agricultural transition has received much attention, however, relatively few studies have directly tested the interrelationship between individual lifestyle factors and their implications for understanding life history changes among the first farmers. We investigate the interplay between skeletal growth, diet, physical activity and population size across 30,000 years in the central Mediterranean through a 'big data' cross-analysis of osteological data related to stature (n = 361), body mass (n = 334) and long bone biomechanics (n = 481), carbon (δC) and nitrogen (δN) stable isotopes (n = 1986 human, n = 475 animal) and radiocarbon dates (n = 5263).
