Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra and the corresponding IR spectra of the chiral isomers of methyloxirane and of methylthiirane have been reinvestigated, both experimentally and theoretically, with particular attention to accounting for anharmonic corrections, as calculated by the GVPT2 approach. De novo recorded VCD spectra in the near IR (NIR) range regarding CH-stretching overtone transitions, together with the corresponding NIR absorption spectra, were also considered and accounted for, both with the GVPT2 and with the local mode approaches. Comparison of the two methods has permitted us to better describe the nature of active "anharmonic" modes in the two molecules and the role of mechanical and electrical anharmonicity in determining the intensities of VCD and IR/NIR data.

Background: Enteroscopy plays an important role in the management of small bowel bleeding. However, current guidelines are not specifically designed for small bowel bleeding and recommendations from different international societies do not always align. Consequently, there is heterogeneity in the definitions of clinical entities, clinical practice policies, and adherence to guidelines among clinicians.

Chronic kidney disease is characterized by increasingly amplified fibrotic processes regardless of etiology. The severity of renal fibrosis seems to correlate with an increased risk of end-stage renal disease; therefore, monitoring of renal fibrosis over time may play an important role in the follow-up of both focal and diffuse renal diseases and in evaluating the response to treatments. Renal biopsy is the only method capable of providing objective and comparable information on the extent of fibrosis, but it is not suitable for outpatient monitoring of chronic kidney disease due to its invasiveness.

Monitoring immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and its clinical efficacy over time in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients treated with disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) help to establish the optimal strategies to ensure adequate COVID-19 protection without compromising disease control offered by DMTs. Following our previous observations on the humoral response one month after two doses of BNT162b2 vaccine (T1) in MS patients differently treated, here we present a cross-sectional and longitudinal follow-up analysis six months following vaccination (T2, n=662) and one month following the first booster (T3, n=185). Consistent with results at T1, humoral responses were decreased in MS patients treated with fingolimod and anti-CD20 therapies compared with untreated patients also at the time points considered here (T2 and T3).

Background: The reconstructive tracheal options for extensive lesions still remain limited and although a valid substitute is required unfortunately, the biomechanical tracheal characteristics do not allow an easy replacement. In this study we reviewed the described options and investigated, in human cadaver model, whether thigh fascia can be used, as an alternative to forearm fascia, as recipient site for trachea graft heterotopical allotransplantation.
Anatomical Study: In three fresh cadavers, 3 tracheal graft, 6 radial forearm (RF) fascial flaps and 6 antero-lateral thigh (ALT) fascial flaps were harvested.

Chirality is undoubtedly a fundamental property of nature since the different interactions of optically active molecules in a chiral environment are essential for numerous applications. Thus, in the field of asymmetric synthesis, the search for efficient, sustainable, cost-effective and recyclable chiral catalysts is still the main challenge in organic chemistry. The field of carbon dots (CDs) has experienced tremendous development in the last 15 years, including their applications as achiral catalysts.

Revealing universal behaviours is a hallmark of statistical physics. Phenomena such as the stochastic growth of crystalline surfaces and of interfaces in bacterial colonies, and spin transport in quantum magnets all belong to the same universality class, despite the great plurality of physical mechanisms they involve at the microscopic level. More specifically, in all these systems, space-time correlations show power-law scalings characterized by universal critical exponents.

Using the timely re-activation of WNT signalling in neuralizing human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), we have produced neural progenitor cells with a gene expression profile typical of human embryonic dentate gyrus (DG) cells. Notably, in addition to continuous WNT signalling, a specific laminin isoform is crucial to prolonging the neural stem state and to extending progenitor cell proliferation for over 200 days in vitro. Laminin 511 is indeed specifically required to support proliferation and to inhibit differentiation of hippocampal progenitor cells for extended time periods when compared with a number of different laminin isoforms assayed.

The PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) is a heterogeneous set of multisystem disorders caused by germline pathogenic variants in the PTEN tumor suppressor gene. Manifestations include developmental anomalies and proliferative lesions. Evidence of involvement of the GI tract has accrued over time, leading to the incorporation of GI manifestations (multiple hamartomas, glycogenic acanthosis and colorectal cancer) into the diagnostic criteria.

Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) isomers, especially Δ8-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ8-THC), are increasing in foods, beverages, and e-cigarettes liquids. A major factor is passage of the Agriculture Improvement Act (AIA) that removed hemp containing less than 0.3 % Δ9-THC from the definition of "marijuana" or cannabis.

However, about 50% of patients are considered to be cisplatin ineligible. Anti-programmed cell death protein 1/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) therapies have, nevertheless, increased the options available to clinicians and are especially valuable for treating these patients.

At the molecular level fluid motions are, by first principles, described by time reversible laws. On the other hand, the coarse grained macroscopic evolution is suitably described by the Navier-Stokes equations, which are inherently irreversible, due to the dissipation term. Here, a reversible version of three-dimensional Navier-Stokes is studied, by introducing a fluctuating viscosity constructed in such a way that enstrophy is conserved, along the lines of the paradigm of microcanonical versus canonical treatment in equilibrium statistical mechanics.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin, first developed as glucose-lowering agents for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, have been demonstrated to improve prognosis in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) regardless of the presence of diabetes. Since these drugs have only recently been included among the four pillars of HFrEF treatment, cardiologists are still unfamiliar with their use in this setting. This article provides an up-to-date practical guide for the initiation and monitoring of patients treated with SGLT2 inhibitors.
