Statistical mechanics of inference in epidemic spreading.

Phys Rev E

December 2023

DISAT, Politecnico di Torino, Corso Duca Degli Abruzzi 24, 10129 Torino.

We investigate the information-theoretical limits of inference tasks in epidemic spreading on graphs in the thermodynamic limit. The typical inference tasks consist in computing observables of the posterior distribution of the epidemic model given observations taken from a ground-truth (sometimes called planted) random trajectory. We can identify two main sources of quenched disorder: the graph ensemble and the planted trajectory.

We consider properties of dichroic antenna arrays on a silicon substrate with integrated cold-electron bolometers to detect radiation at frequencies of 210 and 240 GHz. This frequency range is widely used in cosmic microwave background experiments in space, balloon, and ground-based missions such as BICEP Array, LSPE, LiteBIRD, QUBIC, Simons Observatory, and AliCPT. As a direct radiation detector, we use cold-electron bolometers, which have high sensitivity and a wide operating frequency range, as well as immunity to spurious cosmic rays.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (iNPH) typically affects the elderly and can cause cognitive decline, resulting in its differential diagnosis with other neurodegenerative conditions. Moreover, it is probably underdiagnosed; such under- and misdiagnosis prevents the patient from receiving the right treatment and significantly affects the quality of life and life expectancy. This investigation is an in-depth analysis of the actual incidence of iNPH in the population of the province served by our hospital (circa 580,000 individuals).

This study aims to compare different types of metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) with lifestyle intervention/medical therapy (LSI/MT) for the treatment of overweight/obesity. The present and network meta-analysis (NMA) includes randomized trials. MBS was associated with a reduction of BMI, body weight, and percent weight loss, when compared to LSI/MT, and also with a significant reduction of HbA1c and a higher remission of diabetes.

Porokeratosis is a group of well-known clinically distinct entities, characterised by different clinical aspects, but sharing a single common histological aspect, namely the cornoid lamella. Usually, porokeratosis occurs in the limbs and trunk, while it rarely involves the face, especially as an exclusive, single, and solitary lesion. We report the case of a 52-year-old Caucasian woman, with an 11-month history of a 2-cm slowly growing solitary, keratotic lesion on her left cheekbone.

Background: Chromosomal inversion polymorphisms have been associated with adaptive behavioral, physiological, morphological and life history traits in the two main Afrotropical malaria vectors, Anopheles coluzzii and Anopheles gambiae. The understanding of the adaptive value of chromosomal inversion systems is constrained by the feasibility of cytological karyotyping. In recent years in silico and molecular approaches have been developed for the genotyping of most widespread inversions (2La, 2Rb and 2Rc).

The anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase, and fusions involving this gene have been reported in a variety of mesenchymal neoplasms. ALK-altered tumors with epithelioid morphology have been described in epithelioid inflammatory myofibroblastic sarcoma and epithelioid fibrous histiocytoma. Herein, we describe the clinicopathologic features of 7 ALK-rearranged mesenchymal tumors with epithelioid morphology occurring predominately in the pediatric population.

Experimental scatter of the fatigue response of additively manufactured components: a statistical method based on the Profile Likelihood.

Sci Rep

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Politecnico di Torino, C.so Duca degli Abruzzi 24, 10129, Turin, Italy.

The fatigue response of additively manufactured (AM) specimens is mainly driven by manufacturing defects, like pores and lack of fusion defects, which are mainly responsible for the large variability of fatigue data in the S-N plot. The analysis of the results of AM tests can be therefore complex: for example, the influence of a specific factor, e.g.

Calprotectin: two sides of the same coin.

Rheumatology (Oxford)

January 2024

Department of Clinical Pathology, Santa Maria Goretti Hospital, AUSL Latina, Latina, Italy.

Calprotectin (CLP) is a calcium-binding protein produced by neutrophils and monocytes in the course of inflammation. Today, the role of faecal CLP in chronic IBD is well known, but in recent years attention has shifted towards circulating CLP. In fact, this molecule can be measured in different biological fluids: blood, saliva and urine, using different analytic methods that are described in this review.
