Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) were employed to study the solvation of Zn2+ ion in dry [Cnmim][Tf2N] (n = 2, 4; 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). For [C4mim][Tf2N] also a water-saturated system was considered. The thermodynamic parameters of single ion solvation and transfer from water to the RTIL, as well as the structural information, were calculated by means of MD simulations and our study evidences that both structural and thermodynamic features can be reproduced by MD in good agreement with the experimental data.

This work presents the simple and low cost synthesis of a new tripodal ligand, in which three units of kojic acid are coupled to a tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) backbone molecule. The protonation equilibria, together with the complex formation equilibria of this ligand with Fe, Al, Cu and Zn ions were studied. The complementary use of potentiometric, spectrophotometric and NMR techniques, and of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, has allowed a thorough characterization of the different species involved in equilibrium.

The microbiota of different types of Italian high-moisture Mozzarella cheese produced using cow or buffalo milk, acidified with natural or selected cultures, and sampled at the dairy or at the mass market, was evaluated using a Next Generation Sequencing approach, in order to identify possible drivers of the bacterial diversity. Cow Mozzarella and buffalo Mozzarella acidified with commercial cultures were dominated by Streptococcus thermophilus, while buffalo samples acidified with natural whey cultures showed similar prevalence of L. delbrueckii subsp.

Background: Risk-adapted therapy is a common strategy in curable hematologic malignancies: standard-risk patients receive less intensive treatment, whereas high-risk patients require a more intensive approach. This model cannot be applied in multiple myeloma (MM), which is still incurable. Continuous treatment (CT) is a key strategy for MM treatment, since it improves duration of remission.

Lymph node dissection (LND; PLND: pelvic LND) is an essential component of radical cystectomy (RC) for bladder cancer (BC). However, the optimal anatomical extent of LND and its potential therapeutic role are still controversial: as we will explain, the extent of LND dissection is a predictor of survival and local recurrence but what is an adequate extension is still unclear. Moreover, there is large uncertainty about the role of surgery in patients with clinically-positive nodes.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been proved to be ideal scaffolds to build nanodevices whose performance can be tuned by changing their coating. In particular, the interaction of AuNPs with proteins was revealed to be highly dependent on the physico-chemical properties of the gold cluster protecting monolayer. In this work we studied the behavior of three different alkanethiolate-coated AuNPs (AT-AuNPs) when they are incubated with a model amyloidogenic protein, β2-microglobulin (β2m), whose clinical relevance in dialysis-related amyloidosis (DRA) and structural properties are well known.

Bovine milk is important for human nutrition, but its fat content is often criticized as a risk factor in cardiovascular disease. Selective breeding programs could be used to alter the fatty acid (FA) composition of bovine milk to improve the healthiness of dairy products for human consumption. Here, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on bovine milk to identify genomic regions or specific genes associated with FA profile and to investigate genetic differences between the Italian Simmental (IS) and Italian Holstein (IH) breeds.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFJet substructure observables have significantly extended the search program for physics beyond the standard model at the Large Hadron Collider. The state-of-the-art tools have been motivated by theoretical calculations, but there has never been a direct comparison between data and calculations of jet substructure observables that are accurate beyond leading-logarithm approximation. Such observables are significant not only for probing the collinear regime of QCD that is largely unexplored at a hadron collider, but also for improving the understanding of jet substructure properties that are used in many studies at the Large Hadron Collider.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA search for new phenomena in final states containing an or pair, jets, and large missing transverse momentum is presented. This analysis makes use of proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of , collected during 2015 and 2016 at a centre-of-mass energy with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search targets the pair production of supersymmetric coloured particles (squarks or gluinos) and their decays into final states containing an or pair and the lightest neutralino ( ) via one of two next-to-lightest neutralino ( ) decay mechanisms: , where the boson decays leptonically leading to a peak in the dilepton invariant mass distribution around the boson mass; and with no intermediate resonance, yielding a kinematic endpoint in the dilepton invariant mass spectrum.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSearches for dijet resonances with sub-TeV masses using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider can be statistically limited by the bandwidth available to inclusive single-jet triggers, whose data-collection rates at low transverse momentum are much lower than the rate from standard model multijet production. This Letter describes a new search for dijet resonances where this limitation is overcome by recording only the event information calculated by the jet trigger algorithms, thereby allowing much higher event rates with reduced storage needs. The search targets low-mass dijet resonances in the range 450-1800 GeV.

The monofunctional platinum drug phenanthriplatin (phenPt) blocks the replication of cancer cells even if it reacts with only one guanine base. However, there is still insufficient experimental data to improve its cytotoxicity and all previously proposed chemical modifications of the parent structure have resulted in a loss of activity. We use theoretical tools to illustrate the key steps in the biological mechanisms of phenPt; that is, its activation in water and the subsequent attack on DNA.

Removal of basal leaves near blooms inevitably affects grapevine balance and cluster microclimate conditions, improving fruit quality. Mechanization of this practice allows growers to save time and resources, but to our knowledge, it has not yet been compared with the manual application of this practice in a cool-climate region where seasonal temperatures frequently limit fruit technological maturity and phenolic ripening in red Vitis vinifera cultivars. In our research, berry sugar concentration was highest with prebloom mechanical treatment (PB-ME).

In this work we study the turbulence modulation in a viscosity-stratified two-phase flow using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of turbulence and the Phase Field Method (PFM) to simulate the interfacial phenomena. Specifically we consider the case of two immiscible fluid layers driven in a closed rectangular channel by an imposed mean pressure gradient. The present problem, which may mimic the behaviour of an oil flowing under a thin layer of different oil, thickness ratio / = 9, is described by three main flow parameters: the shear Reynolds number (which quantifies the importance of inertia compared to viscous effects), the Weber number (which quantifies surface tension effects) and the viscosity ratio = / between the two fluids.

Metabolism and carbon, oxygen, and nutrient fluxes (DIC, DOC, DO, NO, NO, NH, PO and SiO) were studied during three surveys at two sites (VN1 and VN3) located at a fish farm at the Marano and Grado Lagoon (northern Adriatic Sea), using an in situ benthic chamber. Field experiments were conducted in July and October 2015 and March 2016 at a depth of approximately 2 m along the main channels of the fish farm. Water samples were collected by a scuba diver every 2 h in order to investigate daily fluxes of solutes across the sediment-water interface (SWI).
