In the past years, many attempts have been made in order to model the process of bone remodeling. This process is complex, as it is governed by not yet completely understood biomechanical coupled phenomena. It is well known that bone tissue is able to self-adapt to different environmental demands of both mechanical and biological origin.

Understanding the structural modification experienced by the Mn CaO oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II along the Kok-Joliot's cycle has been a challenge for both theory and experiments since many decades. In particular, differential infrared spectroscopy was extensively used to probe the surroundings of the reaction center, to catch spectral changes between different S-states along the catalytic cycle. Because of the complexity of the signals, only a limited quantity of identified peaks have been assigned so far, also because of the difficulty of a direct comparison with theoretical calculations.

The plant cell wall is the barrier that pathogens must overcome to cause a disease, and to this end they secrete enzymes that degrade the various cell wall components. Due to the complexity of these components, several types of oligosaccharide fragments may be released during pathogenesis and some of these can act as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Well-known DAMPs are the oligogalacturonides (OGs) released upon degradation of homogalacturonan and the products of cellulose breakdown, i.

Climate models consistently predict an acceleration of the Brewer-Dobson circulation (BDC) due to climate change in the 21st century. However, the strength of this acceleration varies considerably among individual models, which constitutes a notable source of uncertainty for future climate projections. To shed more light upon the magnitude of this uncertainty and on its causes, we analyze the stratospheric mean age of air (AoA) of 10 climate projection simulations from the Chemistry Climate Model Initiative phase 1 (CCMI-I), covering the period between 1960 and 2100.

Bacterial resistance has become a worldwide concern, particularly after the emergence of resistant strains overproducing carbapenemases. Among these, the KPC-2 carbapenemase represents a significant clinical challenge, being characterized by a broad substrate spectrum that includes aminothiazoleoxime and cephalosporins such as cefotaxime. Moreover, strains harboring KPC-type β-lactamases are often reported as resistant to available β-lactamase inhibitors (clavulanic acid, tazobactam and sulbactam).

Previous multi-model intercomparisons have shown that chemistry-climate models exhibit significant biases in tropospheric ozone compared with observations. We investigate annual-mean tropospheric column ozone in 15 models participating in the SPARC/IGAC (Stratosphere-troposphere Processes and their Role in Climate/International Global Atmospheric Chemistry) Chemistry-Climate Model Initiative (CCMI). These models exhibit a positive bias, on average, of up to 40-50% in the Northern Hemisphere compared with observations derived from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument and Microwave Limb Sounder (OMI/MLS), and a negative bias of up to ~30% in the Southern Hemisphere.

The proto-oncogene c-Src is a non-receptor tyrosine kinase which is involved in the regulation of many cellular processes, such as differentiation, adhesion and survival. c-Src hyperactivation has been detected in many tumors, including neuroblastoma (NB), one of the major causes of death from neoplasia in infancy. We already reported a large family of pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidines active as c-Src inhibitors.

Height and its variations in time are considered useful indicators of living conditions in countries and in periods where no written sources are available. Majority of data refer to male stature, whereas data concerning female stature are limited and cover only a short span. This paper investigates the height of 456 women in 6 African countries, born around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

1,8-Naphthalenediol (dihydroxynaphthalene, 1,8-DHN) has been shown to be a potent hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) antioxidant compound because of the strong stabilization of the resulting free radical by intramolecular hydrogen bonding. However, the properties, reactivity, and fate of the 1,8-DHN phenoxyl radical have remained so far uncharted. Herein, we report an integrated experimental and computational characterization of the early intermediates and dimer products that arise by the oxidation of 1,8-DHN.

Neuronal responses to external stimuli vary from trial to trial partly because they depend on continuous spontaneous variations of the state of neural circuits, reflected in variations of ongoing activity prior to stimulus presentation. Understanding how post-stimulus responses relate to the pre-stimulus spontaneous activity is thus important to understand how state dependence affects information processing and neural coding, and how state variations can be discounted to better decode single-trial neural responses. Here we exploited high-resolution CMOS electrode arrays to record simultaneously from thousands of electrodes in in-vitro cultures stimulated at specific sites.

Background: In 1969, Dazzi and Finizio reported the second observation of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) - amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) association in a large Italian kindred affected by an autosomal dominant form of ALS with high penetrance, frequent bulbar onset, and frequent cognitive decline.
Objective: To expand the original characterization of this family and report the link with the C9orf72 repeat expansion (RE).
Methods: We followed or reviewed the medical records of thirteen patients belonging to the original family and performed genetic analyses in four individuals.

The emergence and dissemination of multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens resistant to nearly all available antibiotics poses a significant threat in clinical therapy. Among them, Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates overexpressing KPC-2 carbapenemase are the most worrisome, extending bacterial resistance to last-resort carbapenems. In this study, we investigate the molecular recognition requirements in the KPC-2 active site by small phenylboronic acid derivatives.

Bacterial resistance has become a worldwide concern after the emergence of metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs). They represent one of the major mechanisms of bacterial resistance against beta-lactam antibiotics. Among MBLs, New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 NDM-1, the most prevalent type, is extremely efficient in inactivating nearly all-available antibiotics including last resort carbapenems.

We witness multipartite entanglement in the ground state of the Kitaev chain-a benchmark model of a one dimensional topological superconductor-also with variable-range pairing, using the quantum Fisher information. Phases having a finite winding number, for both short- and long-range pairing, are characterized by a power-law diverging finite-size scaling of multipartite entanglement. Moreover, the occurring quantum phase transitions are sharply marked by the divergence of the derivative of the quantum Fisher information, even in the absence of a closing energy gap.

The reduction of graphene oxide (GO) has been extensively studied in literature in order to let GO partially recover the properties of graphene. Most of the techniques proposed to reduce GO are based on high temperature annealing or chemical reduction. A new procedure, based on the direct reduction of GO by etched Si substrate, was recently proposed in literature.

An accurate estimate of global hydroxyl radical (OH) abundance is important for projections of air quality, climate, and stratospheric ozone recovery. As the atmospheric mixing ratios of methyl chloroform (CHCCl) (MCF), the commonly used OH reference gas, approaches zero, it is important to find alternative approaches to infer atmospheric OH abundance and variability. The lack of global bottom-up emission inventories is the primary obstacle in choosing a MCF alternative.
