Materials or systems demonstrating negative linear compressibility (NLC), whose size increases (decreases) in at least one of their dimensions upon compression (decompression) are very rare. Materials demonstrating this effect in all their dimensions, negative volumetric compressibility (NVC), are exceptional. Here, by liquid porosimetry and neutron diffraction, we show that one can achieve exceptional NLC and NVC values by nonwetting liquid intrusion in flexible porous media, namely in the ZIF-8 metal-organic framework (MOF).

Myroxylon pereirae (balsam of Peru): Still worth testing?

Contact Dermatitis

September 2021

Section of Dermatology, Department of Biomedical Science and Human Oncology, University of Bari, Bari, Italy.

Background: Because Myroxylon pereirae (MP), or balsam of Peru, is nowadays almost not used "as such," and fragrance mix 1 (FM1) apparently is more sensitive in detecting fragrance allergy, the usefulness of testing MP in baseline series was recently questioned.

Objectives: Identification of the number of clinically relevant patch test reactions to MP not detected by FM1.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of 12 030 patients patch tested with MP and FM1 for contact dermatitis between January 2018 and December 2019 in 13 Italian dermatology clinics.

Low impact of different SNP panels from two building-loci pipelines on RAD-Seq population genomic metrics: case study on five diverse aquatic species.

BMC Genomics

March 2021

Department of Zoology, Genetics and Physical Anthropology, ACUIGEN group, Faculty of Veterinary, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Campus of Lugo, 27002, Lugo, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The introduction of Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and RAD-seq has dramatically improved the identification and genotyping of molecular markers for various aquatic species, especially those with limited genomic resources.
  • A comparison was made between two bioinformatics pipelines, STACKS 2 and Meyer's 2b-RAD v2.1, using five different species, to evaluate SNP panels, revealing that while there were variations in results, overall genetic diversity within species remained consistent.
  • Although the choice of pipeline had minimal influence on population genetics conclusions, distinct discrepancies were noted between de novo methods and reference genomes, prompting further exploration of different bioinformatic tools.

Four novel polypyridine cobalt(II) complexes were developed based on a hexadentate ligand scaffold bearing either electron-withdrawing (-CF ) or electron-donating (-OCH ) groups in different positions of the ligand. Experiments and theoretical calculations were combined to perform a systematic investigation of the effect of the ligand modification on the hydrogen evolution reaction. The results indicated that the position, rather than the type of substituent, was the dominating factor in promoting catalysis.

A facile synthesis of diaryl pyrroles led to the discovery of potent colchicine site antimitotic agents.

Eur J Med Chem

March 2021

Istituto di Ricerca Pediatrica (IRP), Corso Stati Uniti 4, 35128, Padova, Italy. Electronic address:

Three different series of cis-restricted analogues of combretastatin A-4 (CA-4), corresponding to thirty-nine molecules that contained a pyrrole nucleus interposed between the two aryl rings, were prepared by a palladium-mediated coupling approach and evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against six human cancer cell lines. In the two series of 1,2-diaryl pyrrole derivatives, results suggested that the presence of the 3',4',5'-trimethoxyphenyl moiety at the N-1 position of the pyrrole ring was more favorable for antiproliferative activity. In the series of 3,4-diarylpyrrole analogues, three compounds (11i-k) exhibited maximal antiproliferative activity, showing excellent antiproliferative activity against the CA-4 resistant HT-29 cells.

Continuous assessment of neuro-ventilatory drive during 12 h of pressure support ventilation in critically ill patients.

Crit Care

November 2020

Dipartimento dell'Emergenza e Trapianti d'Organo (DETO), Sezione di Anestesiologia e Rianimazione, Università degli Studi di Bari "Aldo Moro", Ospedale Policlinico, Piazza Giulio Cesare 11, Bari, Italy.

Introduction: Pressure support ventilation (PSV) should allow spontaneous breathing with a "normal" neuro-ventilatory drive. Low neuro-ventilatory drive puts the patient at risk of diaphragmatic atrophy while high neuro-ventilatory drive may causes dyspnea and patient self-inflicted lung injury. We continuously assessed for 12 h the electrical activity of the diaphragm (EAdi), a close surrogate of neuro-ventilatory drive, during PSV.

We prove that the Hermite functions are an absolute Schauder basis for many global weighted spaces of ultradifferentiable functions in the matrix weighted setting and we determine also the corresponding coefficient spaces, thus extending the previous work by Langenbruch. As a consequence, we give very general conditions for these spaces to be nuclear. In particular, we obtain the corresponding results for spaces defined by weight functions.

Formation and Stability of Smooth Thin Films with Soft Microgels Made of Poly(-Isopropylacrylamide) and Poly(Acrylic Acid).

Polymers (Basel)

November 2020

Istituto per la Sintesi Organica e la Fotoreattivitá del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (ISOF-CNR), via P. Gobetti 101, 40129 Bologna, Italy.

In this work, soft microgels of Poly(-Isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) at two different sizes and of interpenetrated polymer network (IPN) composed of PNIPAm and Poly(Acrylic Acid) (PAAc) were synthesized. Then, solutions of these different types of microgels have been spin-coated on glass substrates with different degrees of hydrophobicity. PNIPAm particles with a larger diameter form either patches or a continuous layer, where individual particles are still distinct, depending on the dispersion concentration and spin speed.

Background: Dupilumab blocks the shared receptor component for interleukin (IL)-4/IL-13, key drivers of type 2 inflammation. In phase 2b (NCT01854047) and phase 3 LIBERTY ASTHMA QUEST (NCT02414854), add-on dupilumab 200/300 mg every 2 weeks (q2w) reduced severe exacerbations, improved prebronchodilator (pre-BD) forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV ) and quality of life measures, and it was generally well tolerated in patients with uncontrolled, persistent (phase 2b), or moderate-to-severe (phase 3) asthma.

Methods: In patients on high-dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) with type 2-high asthma (subgroups including baseline blood eosinophils ≥150/300 cells/µL and/or fractional exhaled nitric oxide [FeNO] ≥25 ppb), annualized severe exacerbation rates over the treatment period, changes from baseline in pre-BD FEV and asthma control (5-item asthma control questionnaire [ACQ-5]) were analyzed.

Neurophysiological monitoring in neonatal abstinence syndrome from cocaine.

Ann Ist Super Sanita

September 2021

UOC Neonatologia e Terapia Intensiva, PO San Marco Azienda O-U Policlinico Vittorio Emanuele, Catania, Italy.

Introduction: Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in a newborn is a result of the sudden discontinuation of exposure to psychotropic drugs abused by the mother during pregnancy. Since forty decades, the standardized Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring Tool (FNAST) documents the infant withdrawal, and initiate the appropriate treatment regimen, when elevated scored are reported. Whereas FNAST is successfully applied for opioids NAS, in case of other psychotropic drugs and especially cocaine, the tool is not always efficacious or predictive.

Could we fight healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance with probiotic-based sanitation? Commentary.

Ann Ist Super Sanita

September 2021

Dipartimento di Sicurezza Alimentare, Alimentazione e Sanità Pubblica Veterinaria,Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome, Italy.

Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) affect every year about 4 million hospitalized patients in the EU, causing over 33 000 deaths as a direct consequence and over 1.1 billion € associated costs. Besides the persistent microbial contamination of the hospital environment, a major cause is the rampant antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of the HAI-associated pathogens.

Objectives: Clinical observation suggests that early acute respiratory distress syndrome induced by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 may be "atypical" due to a discrepancy between a relatively unaffected static respiratory system compliance and a significant hypoxemia. This would imply an "atypical" response to the positive end-expiratory pressure.

Design: Single-center, unblinded, crossover study.

In the Late Middle Paleolithic of Central Europe, two main cultural complexes have been distinguished: the Micoquian or Keilmessergruppe (KMG), and the Mousterian. Their differences mainly consist in the frequence of some retouched tools and the presence of bifacial technology. When these industries coexist, one element of discussion is the application of different concepts to manufacture tools with the same techno-functionality.

The Late Mesolithic in Southern Europe is dated to the 7th and the first part of the 6th millennia BCE and is marked by profound changes which are mostly evident in the technical know-how and tool-kit of the last hunter-fisher-gatherer societies. The significance of this phase also relates to the fact that it precedes the Early Neolithic, another period of major transformations of human societies. Nonetheless, the Late Mesolithic still remains a poorly known age in this area.

Article Synopsis
  • Notarchirico in Southern Italy reveals the earliest evidence of Acheulean settlements with new archaeological findings, including bifaces, extending its history in Italy.
  • Recent dating places these ancient occupations between 695 and 670 ka during the MIS 17 period, aligning with similar sites in France.
  • The findings suggest rapid cultural expansion among adaptable hominins in Western Europe during fluctuating climate conditions, challenging the idea of refuge areas during glacial stages and highlighting the need to explore migration routes like the Sicilian pathway.

Fire and grass-bedding construction 200 thousand years ago at Border Cave, South Africa.

Science

August 2020

Archaeology Division, School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, 1 Jan Smuts Avenue, Braamfontein 2001, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Early plant use is seldom described in the archaeological record because of poor preservation. We report the discovery of grass bedding used to create comfortable areas for sleeping and working by people who lived in Border Cave at least 200,000 years ago. Sheaves of grass belonging to the broad-leafed Panicoideae subfamily were placed near the back of the cave on ash layers that were often remnants of bedding burned for site maintenance.
