Impact of lockdown on emergency general surgery during first 2020 COVID-19 outbreak.

Purpose: To evaluate and analyze the impact of lockdown strategy due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on emergency general surgery (EGS) in the Milan area at the beginning of pandemic outbreak.

Methods: A survey was distributed to 14 different hospitals of the Milan area to analyze the variation of EGS procedures. Each hospital reported the number of EGS procedures in the same time frame comparing 2019 and 2020.

Physical and chemical perturbations induce the formation of protein aggregates with different structural features.

The in vitro aggregation of the model GST-GFP fusion protein was induced by several effectors, including those mimicking variations occurring under cell stress conditions. In particular, we examined the effects of thermal treatments, redox state and pH variations, salt addition, and freezing and thawing cycles. The resulting aggregates displayed different morphologies as seen by electron microscopy, and different secondary and tertiary structures, as indicated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence.

Effect of different inspiratory rise time and cycling off criteria during pressure support ventilation in patients recovering from acute lung injury.

Objective: With many mechanical ventilators, it is possible to modify the time to reach the selected airway pressure and the criteria for cycling off the inflation during pressure support ventilation. This study evaluated the effect of different inspiratory rise time and cycling off criteria on breathing pattern and work of breathing.

Hemifield memory for attractiveness.

In order to determine whether or not facial attractiveness plays a role in hemispheric facial memory, 35 right-handed participants first assigned attractiveness ratings to faces and then performed a recognition test on those faces in the left visual half-field (LVF) and right visual half-field (RVF). We found significant interactions between the experimental factors and visual half-field. There were significant differences in the extreme ends of the rating scale, that is, the very unattractive versus the very attractive faces: Female participants remembered very attractive faces of both women and men, with memory being superior in the RVF than in the LVF.

Chromatofocusing and isoelectric focusing in immobilized pH gradients compared for characterization of human hemoglobin variants.

We compared the performance of two highly resolving methods, chromatofocusing (CRF) and isoelectric focusing in immobilized pH gradients (IPGF), for the separation of human hemoglobin variants.
