Autochthonous dengue outbreak in Marche Region, Central Italy, August to October 2024.

Euro Surveill

November 2024

The members of the Marche dengue outbreak group are listed under Collaborators.

Between August and 28 October 2024, 199 autochthonous cases of dengue virus serotype 2 were notified in the city of Fano, central Italy. We describe the ongoing epidemiological and microbiological investigation and public health measures implemented to contain the outbreak. The high transmissibility and the extension of the outbreak suggest that dengue should be expected in temperate regions during favourable seasons, highlighting the need for heightened awareness among healthcare providers and the public to ensure timely detection and response.

Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for patients with a large preoperative deformity (more than 10° varus or valgus) remains a challenge leading to a high rate of outliers, unsatisfactory functional results, or early prosthetic loosening. Robotic arm-assisted TKA (RATKA) has shown improvements in implant positioning accuracy. This study aimed to assess RATKA implant positioning accuracy and functional results at one year postoperative for patients with a large preoperative deformity.

Microplastics pervade ocean ecosystems. Despite their effects on individuals or populations are well documented, the consequences of microplastics on ecosystem functioning are still largely unknown. Here, we show how microplastics alter the structure and functioning of pelagic microbial ecosystems.

The added value of targeting airway hyperresponsiveness by blocking TSLP in the management of severe asthma.

Eur Ann Allergy Clin Immunol

November 2024

Allergy Unit, National Healthcare System, Scilla, Italy.

Airways hyperresponsiveness (AHR) is a pathognomonic event of asthma in which the airways are reactive to various bronchoconstrictor stimuli at 'doses' that normally have no bronchoconstrictor effect in non-asthmatics. AHR is an objective measure of clinical efficacy, and the introduction of biologics revived interest as a marker of disease and its pathophysiologic mechanism. This article aims to discuss the mechanisms of AHR, focusing on the role of epithelial damage and TSLP production, and promote its correct assessment for the evaluation of patients with severe asthma, to predict the risk of exacerbations and outcomes, and the eligibility for treatment with an anti-TSLP agent.

Eur Ann Allergy Clin Immunol

November 2024

Student Research Club of Clinical Immunology, Department of Allergology, Clinical Immunology and Internal Diseases, Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Omega-3 fatty acids are involved in many processes in the human body. Their beneficial effects were documented mainly in relation to cardiovascular and immune systems. Patients with immunodeficiencies with predominantly antibody defects due to their reduced immunoglobulin levels should have factors adversely affecting the course of the disease eliminated.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed new circulating markers related to macrovascular complications (MVC) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by comparing controls, patients with T2DM, and those with T2DM and vascular complications.
  • Results showed significant differences in the expression of specific microRNAs (miRs) between groups, particularly in miR-126a-3p, which was decreased in patients with vascular complications.
  • The study identified predictive models using various biomarkers, including HbA1c, creatinine, total cholesterol, and specific miRs, suggesting new avenues for understanding and predicting MVC in individuals with T2DM.

  • The study examines the impact of different uncemented femoral stem designs (straight vs. anatomical) on clinical outcomes in total hip arthroplasty (THA) for osteoarthritis patients.
  • A total of 84 patients were divided into two groups based on stem design, with clinical assessments taken at multiple follow-up points using various standardized scoring tools.
  • Results indicated no significant differences in overall clinical outcomes between the two designs; however, the anatomical stem group had lower complication rates and is suggested as a preferable option in THA.

A narrative review on allergy and exposure to domestic and non-domestic animals: favorable and unfavorable effects.

Eur Ann Allergy Clin Immunol

November 2024

Department of Experimental Medicine, Postgraduate School of Respiratory Medicine, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy.

The aim of this contribution was to highlight the "favorable" and "unfavorable" roles of domestic and non-domestic animals on airway sensitization processes and on the type/severity of the clinical symptoms induced by their exposure. We performed a literature research in MEDLINE for allergic manifestations and animals. Pets can be "allergy friends" through mechanisms related to hygiene hypothesis and translational aspects, the dual role of IgG4 antibodies for pets, and their promising role as healthcare service animals (dogs).

Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign, monoclonal, gynaecological tumors in a woman's uterus, while leiomyosarcoma is a rare but aggressive condition caused by the malignant transformation of the myometrium. To overcome the common obstacles related to the methods usually used to study these pathologies, we aimed to devise three-dimensional models of myometrium, uterine leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma cell lines, using two different types of biocompatible scaffolds. Specifically, we exploited the agarose gel matrix in common 6-well plates and the alginate matrix using Bioprinting INKREDIBLE + (CELLINK), a pneumatic extruded base equipped with a system with double printheads, and a UV printer LED curing system.

Emotional comorbidities in epilepsy result from seizure-induced corticosterone activity.

Neurobiol Stress

November 2024

Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, T2N 4N1, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • - People with epilepsy often experience psychiatric disorders that negatively impact their quality of life, potentially due to changes in endocannabinoid signaling in the amygdala after seizures.
  • - The study found that seizures lead to elevated levels of corticosterone (CORT), which influences cognitive and emotional processes, and this hypersecretion could contribute to emotional dysregulation following seizure activity.
  • - Using a CORT synthesis inhibitor or receptor antagonists before seizures was shown to prevent anxiety-like behaviors and memory impairments, suggesting potential treatments for emotional issues in individuals with epilepsy.
