N-(3-hydroxyacyl)glycines are compounds of remarkable interest due to their biogenic origin and bioactivity and as precursors of the corresponding 3-acyloxy derivatives which represent an important class of bioactive products of bacterial origin. Commendamide [N-(3-hydroxypalmitoyl)glycine] (1) is a gut microbiota-derived bioactive metabolite that is structurally like endogenous long-chain N-acyl-amino acids belonging to the endocannabinoidome, a complex lipid signaling system involved in several aspects of mammalian physiology and pathology. Thanks to this structural similarity, this compound and its analogues, like the N-(3-hydroxymyristoyl)glycine 2, exert a remarkable bioactivity in mammals, for instance, through activation of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs).

Importance: The management of posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries in children is complex and varies depending on the specific nature of the injury. Avulsions of the PCL can often be addressed with proximal or distal repair, while intra-substance tears and cases with persistent instability generally require more extensive reconstruction. Despite the prevalence of such cases, the literature is predominantly composed of case reports, indicating a lack of comprehensive research in this area.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals known for their persistence and bioaccumulation, leading to widespread environmental contamination. Despite their recognised environmental risks, particularly to aquatic wildlife, including marine invertebrates, detailed impact studies are limited. PFAS can be categorised according to the length of the compound chain, with short-chain PFAS announced as a safer alternative to the more commonly used long-chain PFAS.

Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) affects about 3-7% of the global population, but is often undiagnosed. It involves pauses in breathing during sleep, for at least 10 s, due to partial or total airway blockage. The current gold standard for diagnosing SAS is polysomnography (PSG), an intrusive procedure that depends on subjective assessment by expert clinicians.

The volitional control of powered assistive devices is commonly performed by mapping the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the lower limb to joints' angular kinematics, which are then used as the input for regulation. However, during walking, the ground reaction force (GRF) plays a central role in the modulation of the gait, providing dynamic stability and propulsion during the stance phase. Including this information within the control loop of prosthetic devices can improve the quality of the final output, providing more physiological walking dynamics that enhances the usability and patient comfort.

Forecasts about the aging trend of the world population agree on identifying increased life expectancy as a serious risk factor for the financial sustainability of social healthcare systems if not properly supported by innovative care management policies. Such policies should include the integration within traditional healthcare services of assistive technologies as tools for prolonging healthy and independent living at home, but also for introducing innovations in clinical practice such as long-term and remote health monitoring. For their part, solutions for active and assisted living have now reached a high degree of technological maturity, thanks to the considerable amount of research work carried out in recent years to develop highly reliable and energy-efficient wearable sensors capable of enabling the development of systems to monitor activity and physiological parameters over time, and in a minimally invasive manner.

Numerous cutting-edge immunotherapy approaches have been developed for hematological malignancies, such as immune-checkpoint inhibitors for lymphomas, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T-cell treatments for B-cell cancers, and monoclonal antibody therapies for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). However, achieving similar breakthroughs in MPNs has proven challenging. The key obstacles include the absence of universally expressed and MPN-specific surface markers, significant cellular and molecular variability among both individual patients and across different MPN subtypes, and the failure of treatments to stimulate an anti-tumor immune response due to the immune system disruptions caused by the myeloid neoplasm.

Pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) and microplastics (MPs) have been detected in different marine compartments from coastal areas, raising concerns due to their simultaneous discharge through wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the role of MPs as vectors of pollutants for marine organisms. This study investigates the biochemical effects of citalopram (CIT) and bezafibrate (BEZ) on the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, at environmentally relevant concentrations, and their co-exposure with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) MPs. MPs accumulated in gills and digestive glands during exposure, but they were rapidly eliminated after depuration, except for a small fraction of the smallest MPs in gills.
