This study explores the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of oxygen (O) and hydrogen sulfide (HS) mass transfer in a highly turbulent stirring tank. Using the open-source software OpenFOAM, we extended three-dimensional two-phase flow solvers with a rotating mesh feature to model the mass transfer processes between the water and air phases. The accuracy of these simulations was validated against experimental data, demonstrating a strong agreement in the mass transfer rates of HS and O.

Photocrosslinkable hydrogels based on hyaluronic acid are promising biomaterials high in demand in tissue engineering. Typically, hydrogels are photocured under the action of UV or blue light strongly absorbed by biotissues, which limits prototyping under living organism conditions. To overcome this limitation, we propose the derivatives of well-known photosensitizers, namely chlorin , chlorin and phthalocyanine, as those for radical polymerization in the transparency window of biotissues.

The first monomeric pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent transaminase from a marine, aromatic-compound-degrading, sulfate-reducing bacterium Tol2, has been studied using structural, kinetic, and spectral methods. The monomeric organization of the transaminase was confirmed by both gel filtration and crystallography. The PLP-dependent transaminase is of the fold type IV and deaminates D-alanine and ()-phenylethylamine in half-reactions.

Objectives: We conducted a cluster-randomized-controlled trial (cRCT) in 18 German nursing homes (NH) to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of reinstruction and remotivation of nursing staff by dental assistants (DAs) over 13 months.
Methods: In the intervention arm, dentists examined NH residents, identified oral health conditions, and prescribed individualized oral care interventions. Nursing staff delivered these interventions, with regular follow-up support from DAs (reinstruction and remotivation).

Modern nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods like carbon relaxation dispersion in the rotating frame (C-R) and proton chemical exchange saturation transfer (H-CEST) are key methods to investigate molecular recognition in biomacromolecules and to detect molecular motions on the μs to s timescale, revealing transient conformational states. Changes in kinetics can be linked to binding, folding, or catalytic events. Here, we investigated whether these methods allow detection of changes in the dynamics of a small, highly selective peptide catalyst during recognition of its enantiomeric substrates.

: Despite the increasing use of chromatic intraoral scanners, color determination is often performed visually, offering poor reliability and validity. In this study, we aimed to compare the reliability and validity of the tooth shade determination tool of an intraoral scanner (Trios3 Color) with that of two dental spectrophotometers (VITA Easyshade Advance 4.0 and SpectroShade Micro) and with visual determination using the VITA 3D-Master shade guide.

Three-finger proteins (TFPs), or Ly6/uPAR proteins, are characterized by the beta-structural LU domain containing three protruding "fingers" and stabilized by four conserved disulfide bonds. TFPs were initially characterized as snake alpha-neurotoxins, but later many studies showed their regulatory roles in different organisms. Despite a known expression of TFPs in vertebrates, they are poorly studied in other taxa.

The coastline of the shallow southern Baltic Sea is a highly dynamic system of spits, lagoonal systems and subtidal flats. On the land side, coastal peatlands are common. Intact peatlands provide important ecosystem services, however, many peatlands have been severely degraded due to human activities.

Plasma-activated chitosan (PAC) colloids for cancer treatment were obtained by using the cold atmospheric plasma technique. Chitosan solutions were irradiated by plasma ignited in argon gas and in a mixture of argon with nitrogen and oxygen gases in certain ratios. The structural modifications of chitosan and the chemical species generated in plasma were investigated by EPR, LC-MS/MS, XRD, DLS, and TGA methods.

Background: Timothy grass (Phleum pratense) is a significant source of allergens, and recombinant allergens are increasingly used for diagnostic purposes. However, the performance of different recombinant allergen production systems in diagnostic assays needs further investigation to optimize their use in clinical settings.
Objective: The main objective of this study was to analyze and compare the diagnostic performance of recombinant timothy grass allergens produced in E.

Pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) are a polygenic family with many scattered genes and pseudogenes resulting from the duplication or fusion of a pseudogene with expression beginning in the trophoblast during the peri-implantation period and continuing in the trophectoderm. In this study, single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and insertion/deletion (InDels) in the open reading frame (nine exons) of crossbreed pigs are reported for the first time. Novel SNPs/InDels were researched using genomic DNA templates isolated from the leukocytes of crossbreed pigs (N = 25), which were amplified, gel-out-purified, and sequenced.

A series of new RS-, RS-CH- and RN-CH-functionalized сatechols with heterocyclic fragments such as 1,3,4-oxadiazole, 1,2,4-triazole, thiazole, or pyridine were synthesized by the reaction of 3,5-di--butyl--benzoquinone or 3,5-di--butyl-6-methoxymethylcatechol with different heterocyclic thiols. The S-functionalized catechols were prepared by the Michael reaction from 3,5-di--butyl--benzoquinone and the corresponding thiols. The starting reagents such as substituted 1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiols and 4-triazole-3-thiols are characterized by thiol-thione tautomerism, therefore their reactions with 3,5-di--butyl-6-methoxymethylcatechol can proceed at the sulfur or nitrogen atom.

Background: The pertrochanteric femoral fracture (PFF) represents one of the most common fracture types throughout Germany. To enable early mobilization of patients, the primary surgical goal is load-stable osteosynthesis. Implant failure still represents the largest group of implant-related complications (>80%).

Clinical complications frequently follow polytrauma and bleeding fractures, increasing the risk of delayed fracture healing and nonunions, especially in aged patients. Therefore, this study examines age's impact on fracture repair with and without severe bleeding in mice. Young (17-26 weeks) and aged (64-72 weeks) male C57BL/6J mice (n = 72 in total, n = 6 per group) are allocated into 3 groups: the fracture group (Fx) undergoes femur osteotomy stabilized via external fixator, the combined trauma group (THFx) additionally receives pressure-controlled trauma hemorrhage (TH) and Sham animals are implanted with catheter and fixator without blood loss or osteotomy.

Chemotherapy is among the main classical approaches to the treatment of oncologic diseases. Its efficiency has been comprehensively proven by clinical examinations; however, the low selectivity of chemotherapeutic agents limits the possibilities of this method, making it necessary to search for new approaches to the therapy of oncologic diseases. Photodynamic therapy is the least invasive method and a very efficient alternative for the treatment of malignant tumors; however, its efficiency depends on the depth of light penetration into the tissue and on the degree of oxygenation of the treatment zone.

In the realm of agricultural sustainability, the utilization of plant genetic resources for enhanced disease resistance is paramount. Preservation efforts in genebanks are justified by their potential contributions to future crop improvement. To capitalize on the potential of plant genetic resources, we focused on a barley core collection from the German ex situ genebank and contrasted it with a European elite collection.
