Background: Clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF) is a dreaded complication following pancreatic surgery. Several scores attempt to predict CR-POPF occurrence to better manage outcomes in patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). In our study, we investigate the prognostic role of several demographic and clinico-pathological variables.

Background: Paternal perinatal depression affects 10% of fathers, implying a significant burden on families and public health. A better insight into the population's health literacy could guide professionals and policymakers in addressing these men and making better use of existing healthcare options. It is also crucial for caregivers, as they play a vital role in identifying symptoms, encouraging help-seeking, and reducing stigma.

Over the past decade, neuropathological diagnosis has undergone significant changes, integrating morphological features with molecular biomarkers. The molecular era has successfully refined neuropathological diagnostic accuracy; however, a substantial number of CNS tumor diagnoses remain challenging, particularly in children. DNA methylation classification has emerged as a powerful machine learning approach for clinical decision-making in CNS tumors.

Introduction: The incidence of Legionnaires' disease (LD) steadily increases worldwide. Although Legionella pneumophila is known as pathogenic, systematic investigations into antibiotic resistance are scarce, and reports of resistance in isolates are recently emerging.
Methods: Clinical cases and metadata reported to the Belgian National Reference Centre between 2011 and 2022 were retrospectively analysed.
In patients with transplant-eligible newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, induction therapy with a quadruplet regimen prior to autologous transplant is the standard of care. The phase III IFM2020-02-MIDAS study (NCT04934475) assessed a minimal residual disease (MRD)-driven consolidation and maintenance strategy following induction with isatuximab, carfilzomib, lenalidomide, and dexamethasone (IsaKRD). Here, we report safety and efficacy outcomes of six 28-day cycles of IsaKRD.

Immune checkpoint blockers (ICBs) have revolutionized the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Currently, one-dose-fits-all maximalist regimens have been considered the standard of care, with ICBs administered at flat doses regardless of patients' weight. Treatment duration with ICBs is often arbitrary across stages, ranging from a fixed time point to until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity.

The lower limb of Homo naledi presents a suite of primitive, derived and unique morphological features that pose interesting questions about the nature of bipedal movement in this species. The exceptional representation of all skeletal elements in H. naledi makes it an excellent candidate for biomechanical analysis of gait dynamics using modern kinematic software.

Language control processes allow for the flexible manipulation and access to context-appropriate verbal representations. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have localized the brain regions involved in language control processes usually by comparing high vs. low lexical-semantic control conditions during verbal tasks.

End-of-life (EOL) issues have become increasingly common in intensive therapy units (ITUs), largely due to advances in critical care that enable patients to be kept alive for extended periods. Death in the ITU now generally follows an EOL decision, which can pose ethical, emotional, and practical challenges. Our approach to such issues should be based on adherence to the four bioethical principles -autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and distributive justice- as well as the concept of proportionate care, and requires careful and effective communication with the whole ITU team, including the patient and their family.

Background: The studies on the use and performance of the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference for age (MUACZ) for the diagnosis of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) are still rare. Our study aimed to analyze the performance of MUACZ for diagnosis of SAM in South Kivu, eastern DR Congo.
Methods: We analyzed a database of children admitted from 1987 to 2008 for management of SAM in the east of the DRC.

Science is crucial for evidence-based decision-making. Public trust in scientists can help decision makers act on the basis of the best available evidence, especially during crises. However, in recent years the epistemic authority of science has been challenged, causing concerns about low public trust in scientists.

Science is integral to society because it can inform individual, government, corporate, and civil society decision-making on issues such as public health, new technologies or climate change. Yet, public distrust and populist sentiment challenge the relationship between science and society. To help researchers analyse the science-society nexus across different geographical and cultural contexts, we undertook a cross-sectional population survey resulting in a dataset of 71,922 participants in 68 countries.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) can be presented with extramedullary manifestations, more frequently involving skin and rarely other sites, such as the urinary tract. We report the case of a 37-year-old male patient with a history of testicular cancer who presented to the emergency department with cytopenias and hematuria. Bone marrow analysis diagnosed AML (French-American-British(FAB) classificationM4 subtype, karyotype showing inv16).

Density functional theory (DFT) has been enacted to study the Diels-Alder reaction between 2,5-dimethylfuran (2,5-DMF), a direct product of biomass transformation, and acrolein and to analyze its thermodynamics, kinetics, and mechanism when catalyzed by a Lewis acid (LA), in comparison to the uncatalyzed reaction. The uncatalyzed reaction occurs via a typical one-step asynchronous process, corresponding to a normal electron demand (NED) mechanism, where acrolein is an electrophile whereas 2,5-DMF is a nucleophile. The small endo selectivity in solvents of low dielectric constants is replaced by a small exo selectivity in solvents with larger dielectric constants, such as DMSO.

Reservoir computing is a machine learning algorithm for processing time dependent data which is well suited for experimental implementation. Tuning the hyperparameters of the reservoir is a time-consuming task that limits is applicability. Here we present an experimental validation of a recently proposed optimisation technique in which the reservoir receives both the input signal and a delayed version of the input signal.

International guidelines recommend giving a bone-protecting agent (BPA) to patients with mCRPC and bone metastases. However, the data supporting these recommendations were generated before androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs) were available.

The marking of DNA, histones, and RNA is central to gene expression regulation in development and disease. Recent evidence links N6-methyladenosine (mA), installed on RNA by the METTL3-METTL14 methyltransferase complex, to histone modifications, but the link between mA and DNA methylation remains scarcely explored. This study shows that METTL3-METTL14 recruits the DNA methyltransferase DNMT1 to chromatin for gene-body methylation.

Intravenous fluid is administered during high-risk surgery to optimize stroke volume (SV). To assess ongoing need for fluids, the hemodynamic response to a fluid bolus is evaluated using a fluid challenge technique. The Acumen Assisted Fluid Management (AFM) system is a decision support tool designed to ease the application of fluid challenges and thus improve fluid administration during high-risk surgery.

Background: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating condition characterised by significant heterogeneity. Early diagnosis is critical, but limited data exists on the condition's early stages. This study aimed to characterise (very) early CRPS patients and explore potential subgroups to enhance understanding of its mechanisms.
