Superselection Rules and Bosonic Quantum Computational Resources.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Laboratoire Matériaux et Phénomènes Quantiques, Université Paris Cité, CNRS UMR 7162, 75013 Paris, France.

We present a method to systematically identify and classify quantum optical nonclassical states as classical or nonclassical based on the resources they create on a bosonic quantum computer. This is achieved by converting arbitrary bosonic states into multiple modes, each occupied by a single photon, thereby defining qubits of a bosonic quantum computer. Starting from a bosonic classical-like state in a representation that explicitly respects particle number superselection rules, we apply universal gates to create arbitrary superpositions of states with the same total particle number.

The reproduction number, the mean number of secondary cases infected by each primary case, gives an indication of the effort required to control the disease. Beyond the well-known reproduction number, there are two natural extensions, namely the and reproduction numbers. As behaviour, population immunity and viral characteristics can change with time, these reproduction numbers can vary over time.

College of Water Sciences, Beijing Normal University, No 19, Xinjiekouwai Street, Beijing 100875, China; Engineering Research Center of Groundwater Pollution Control and Remediation, Ministry of Education, Beijing, 100875, China. Electronic address:

Reclaimed water is widely used in agriculture irrigation to alleviate water scarcity, whereas the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the soil it introduces has attracted widespread attention. Currently, few studies have systematically elucidated the coalescence of the resistome originating from reclaimed water with the soil's native community. Also, the effects and mechanisms of irrigation on the dissemination of ARGs in soils have yet to be demonstrated.

The influence of coadsorbed ions on adsorbate diffusion, an inherent effect at solid-liquid interfaces, was studied for adsorbed sulfur on Ag(100) electrodes in the presence of bromide or iodide. Quantitative in situ high-speed scanning tunnelling microscopy (video-STM) measurements were performed both in the potential regime of the c(2×2) halide adlayer at its saturation coverage and in the regime of a disordered adlayer where the halide coverage increases with potential. These studies reveal a surprising non-monotonic potential dependence of Sad diffusion with an initial increase with halide coverage, followed by a decrease upon halide adlayer ordering into the c(2×2) structure.

Grandparental childcare and subjective well-being: The role of activities and reasons for care.

Soc Sci Med

January 2025

Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London, 1-19 Torrington Place, 355a, London, WC1E 7HB, UK.

Despite extensive research on the impact of grandchild care on grandparents' well-being, no studies have examined the frequency of activities that grandparents engage in with their grandchildren or the reasons for care using nationally representative data. We address this gap using waves 8 (2016/2017) and 9 (2018/19) of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, a nationally representative study of English older adults. We employ hybrid regression models to distinguish between within- and between-individual effects on grandparents' subjective wellbeing, as captured by quality of life and depressive symptoms.
