The cadmium-rich intermetallic compounds RhCd ( = Ca, Sr, Y, La-Nd, Sm-Lu) were synthesized from the elements in sealed tantalum tubes. The elements were reacted in an induction furnace and the samples were post-annealed to increase phase purity and crystallinity. The RhCd phases crystallize with the cubic CeCrAl type structure, space group 3̄.

Objective: We sought to develop consensus recommendations for measurement and analysis of data on contraceptive-induced menstrual changes (CIMCs) in contraceptive clinical trials. We built upon previous standardization efforts over the last 50 years and prioritized input from a variety of global experts and current regulatory authority guidance on patient-reported outcomes.

Study Design: We completed a formal consensus-building process with an interdisciplinary group of 57 experts from 30 organizations and 14 countries in five global regions who work across academia, nonprofit research organizations, the pharmaceutical industry, and funding agencies.

Artificial Intelligence in Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography.

Curr Med Imaging

January 2025

UOC Neurologia e Rete Stroke Metropolitana, Istituto delle Scienze Neurologiche di Bologna, Italy.

Transcranial Doppler is an instrumental ultrasound method capable of providing data on various brain pathologies, in particular, the study of cerebral hemodynamics in stroke, quickly, economically, and with repeatability of the data themselves. However, literature reviews from clinical studies and clinical trials reported that it is an operator-dependent method, and the data can be influenced by external factors, such as noise, which may require greater standardization of the parameters. Artificial intelligence can be utilized on transcranial Doppler to increase the accuracy and precision of the data collected while decreasing operator dependencies.

A 54-year-old man presented with increasing arthralgia and swelling of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints II and III for approximately 2 years. He also reported morning stiffness and joint pain in both knees and feet. Both MCP joints II and III and the proximal interphalangeal joints II and III were tender without visible swelling.

Herz

January 2025

Klinik für Kardiologie, Angiologie und internistische Intensivmedizin, Universitätsklinikum des Saarlandes, Kirrberger Str. 1, 66421, Homburg/Saar, Deutschland.

Respiratory tract infections with influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and respiratory syncytial (RS) viruses and pneumococci as well as endogenous reactivation of varicella zoster viruses presenting as herpes zoster, are associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes, such as myocardial infarction or hospitalization for heart failure. Effective prevention of these events, particularly through influenza and pneumococcal vaccination, is well established and cost-effective. Despite guideline recommendations to vaccinate older patients and people at risk, vaccination rates in these population groups remain suboptimal and below average in international comparison.

Radiologie (Heidelb)

February 2025

Klinik für diagnostische und interventionelle Neuroradiologie, Universitätskliniken des Saarlandes, Kirrberger Str., 66421, Homburg Saar, Deutschland.

Performance: Spontaneous dissections of the cerebral arteries are among the leading causes of stroke in young adults. They result from hemorrhage into the outer layers of the arterial wall, which can lead to stenosis or even complete vessel occlusion. Clinical presentations vary, ranging from localized pain to cerebral ischemic complications.

[A short history of stroke].

Radiologie (Heidelb)

February 2025

Klinik für Diagnostische und Interventionelle Neuroradiologie, Universitätsklinikum des Saarlandes, Kirrberger Str., 66424, Homburg, Deutschland.

The history of stroke dates back to antiquity, where it was first described as "apoplexia" in Hippocratic writings. For centuries, understanding of the pathology was limited, based on Galen's theories and humoral pathology. Significant advances were made by Islamic scholars who expanded the knowledge and addressed existing contradictions.

: Empirical antibacterial therapy for febrile neutropenia reduces mortality due to Gram-negative blood stream infections (BSIs). Pediatric guidelines recommend monotherapy with an antipseudomonal beta-lactam or a carbapenem and to add a second anti-Gram-negative agent in selected situations. We evaluated the changes in the proportions of resistance of beta-lactam monotherapies vs.

Photoacids undergo an increase in acidity upon electronic excitation, enabling excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reactions. A multitude of compounds that allow ESPT has been identified and integrated in numerous applications, as is outlined by reviewing the rich history of photoacid research reaching back more than 90 years. In particular, achievements together with ambitions and challenges are highlighted from a combined experimental and theoretical perspective.

Background: The new patient cataract and lens ophthalmic questionnaire (CLOQ) determines subjective patient satisfaction before and after cataract surgery according to item response theory (IRT).

Methods: A total of 317 patients with bilateral cataract surgery and implantation of different intraocular lens (IOL) types were included. The questionnaire (37 questions) is divided into questions on visual acuity-relevant quality of life (VRQoL), quality of vision (QoV), spectacle dependence, and general satisfaction.

The computation of magnetizability tensors using gauge-including atomic orbitals is discussed in the context of Cholesky decomposition (CD) for the two-electron repulsion integrals with a focus on the involved doubly differentiated integrals. Three schemes for their handling are suggested: the first exploits the density fitting (DF) aspect of Cholesky decomposition, the second uses expressions obtained by differentiating the CD expression for the unperturbed two-electron integrals, while the third addresses the issue that the first two schemes are not able to represent the doubly differentiated integrals with arbitrary accuracy. This scheme uses a separate Cholesky decomposition for the cross terms in the doubly differentiated two-electron integrals.

Self-Assembled Chains and Solids of Dipolar Atoms in a Multilayer.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Departament de Física, Campus Nord B4-B5, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, E-08034 Barcelona, Spain.

We predict that ultracold bosonic dipolar gases, confined within a multilayer geometry, may undergo self-assembling processes, leading to the formation of chain gases and solids. These dipolar chains, with dipoles aligned across different layers, emerge at low densities and resemble phases observed in liquid crystals, such as nematic and smectic phases. We calculate the phase diagram using quantum Monte Carlo methods, introducing a newly devised trial wave function designed for describing the chain gas, where dipoles from different layers form chains without in-plane long-range order.

[Complications of mechanical thrombectomy].

Radiologie (Heidelb)

February 2025

Klinik für Diagnostische und Interventionelle Neuroradiologie, Universitätsklinikum des Saarlandes, Kirrberger Straße 1, 66424, Homburg/Saar, Deutschland.

Clinical Problem: Ischemic stroke is the most common cause of disability in adults and an important disease for society; therefore, the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment play an important role. Endovascular mechanical recanalization to reopen large occlusions of the intracerebral vessels has established itself as the gold standard in therapy, which is why knowledge of the most important complications and their management is essential for interventionalists.

Practical Recommendations: Intracranial hemorrhages, which include intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhages, are dreaded complications that significantly worsen the clinical outcome.

The phylum Actinomycetota and genus Streptomyces in particular are the major source for discovery of natural products with diverse chemical structures and a variety of biological activities. Genes encoding biosynthetic pathways for bacterial natural products are grouped together into biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). The size of a typical actinobacterial BGC may range from 10 kb to 200 kb, which makes their cloning for heterologous expression a challenging task.
