We present a single-arm, phase II, neoadjuvant trial with the oncolytic virus talimogene laherparepvec (T-VEC) in 18 patients with difficult-to-resect cutaneous basal cell carcinomas. The primary end point, defined as the proportion of patients, who after six cycles of T-VEC (13 weeks), become resectable without the need for plastic reconstructive surgery, was already achieved after stage I (9 of 18 patients; 50.0%); thus the study was discontinued for early success.

We synthesized and spectroscopically investigated monolayer (ML) C on the topological insulator (TI) BiTe. This C/BiTe heterostructure is characterized by an excellent translational order in a novel (4 × 4) C superstructure on a (9 × 9) cell of BiTe. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of C/BiTe reveals that ML C accepts electrons from the TI at room temperature, but no charge transfer occurs at low temperatures.

Despite the intrinsic charge heterogeneity of proteins plays a crucial role in the liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of a broad variety of protein systems, our understanding of the effects of their electrostatic anisotropy is still in its early stages. We approach this issue by means of a coarse-grained model based on a robust mean-field description that extends the DLVO theory to non-uniformly charged particles. We numerically investigate the effect of surface charge patchiness and net particle charge on varying these features independently and with the use of a few parameters only.

Localized high-risk (HR) prostate cancer (PCa) is a heterogeneous disease whose likelihood of a biochemical recurrence, metastatic progression and cancer-related mortality after initial treatment is higher when compared with patients with low (LR) or intermediate-risk (IR) disease. In the past, neoadjuvant therapy has shown an improvement in postoperative oncological variables but failed to demonstrate any survival advantages. Plant-derived foods are potential vehicles for microbial antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which can be transferred to the human microbiome if consumed raw or minimally processed. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and the amount of clinically relevant ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in differently processed smoothies (freshly prepared, cold-pressed, pasteurized and high-pressure processed) and fresh produce samples (organically and conventionally cultivated) to assess potential health hazards associated with their consumption. The MGE and the class 1 integron-integrase gene were detected by probe-based qPCR in concentrations up to 10 copies/mL in all smoothies, lettuce, carrots and a single tomato sample.

In this paper, we tackle the challenge of accurately controlling the position of the valve spool in hydraulic 4/3 two-stage directional control valves utilized in mobile applications. The pilot valve's overlapping design often leads to a significant dead zone, negatively impacting positioning accuracy and necessitating a sophisticated controller design. Background: Preoperative localization of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands in primary hyperparathyroidism is essential for successful parathyroid surgery, particularly in patients with previous negative imaging or reoperations.
Methods: A multicenter registry study was performed in 776 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism from 53 hospitals in Germany and Austria who underwent parathyroid surgery after preoperative F-choline or C-methionine positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT).
Results: In 683 of 776 patients (88%) (78% female, aged 15-86 years), primary hyperparathyroidism was caused by a single-gland parathyroid adenoma.

Unlabelled: In recent years, sugar alcohols have gained significant attention as organic phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal energy storage due to their comparably high thermal storage densities up to 350 J/g. In a computational study, outstandingly high values of up to ~ 450-500 J/g have been postulated for specific higher-carbon sugar alcohols. These optimized structures feature an even number of carbon atoms in the backbone and a stereochemical configuration in which all hydroxyl groups are in an 1,3--relationship, as found in the natural hexitol d-mannitol.
