TP53 gene disruption, including 17p13 deletion [del(17p)] and/or TP53 mutations, is a negative prognostic biomarker in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) associated with disease progression, treatment failure and shorter survival. Germline variants in p53 signaling pathway genes could also lead to p53 dysfunction, but their involvement in CLL has not been thoroughly evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine the association of TP53, MDM2 and NQO1 gene variability with clinical and genetic data of CLL patients.

January 2023

Centro de Investigaciones en Bioquímica Clínica e Inmunología (CIBICI-CONICET), Facultad de Ciencias Químicas, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Córdoba, Argentina.

B cells, follicular helper T (Tfh) cells and follicular regulatory T (Tfr) cells are part of a circuit that may play a role in the development or progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). With the aim of providing further insight into this topic, here we evaluated the frequency of different subsets of Tfh and Tfr in untreated and long-term treated RA patients from a cohort of Argentina, and their potential association with particular human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class-II variants and disease activity. We observed that the frequency of total Tfh cells as well as of particular Tfh subsets and Tfr cells were increased in seropositive untreated RA patients.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

May 2022

Departamento de Bioquímica Clínica, Facultad de Ciencias Químicas, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Córdoba, Argentina.

Background: Congenital iodide transport defect (ITD) is an uncommon cause of dyshormonogenic congenital hypothyroidism characterized by the absence of active iodide accumulation in the thyroid gland. ITD is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by loss-of-function variants in the sodium/iodide symporter (NIS)-coding gene.

Objective: We aimed to identify, and if so to functionally characterize, novel ITD-causing gene variants in a cohort of five unrelated pediatric patients diagnosed with dyshormonogenic congenital hypothyroidism with minimal to absent Tc-pertechnetate accumulation in the thyroid gland.

B cells from Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis Show Conserved CD39-Mediated Regulatory Function and increased CD39 Expression After Positive Response to Therapy.

J Mol Biol

January 2021

Centro de Investigaciones en Bioquímica Clínica e Inmunología (CIBICI-CONICET), Facultad de Ciencias Químicas, UNC, Córdoba, Argentina. Electronic address:

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by progressive joint destruction associated with increased pro-inflammatory mediators. In inflammatory microenvironments, exogenous ATP (eATP) is hydrolyzed to adenosine, which exerts immunosuppressive effects, by the consecutive action of the ectonucleotidases CD39 and CD73. Mature B cells constitutively express both ectonucleotidases, converting these cells to potential suppressors.

Position statement: asthma in Latin America. IS short-acting beta-2 agonist helping or compromising asthma management?

J Asthma

August 2021

Pulmonary Division-Heart Institute (InCor), Hospital das Clinicas, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

In Latin-America, with 603 million inhabitants, the average prevalence of asthma is estimated at 17%, but with wide fluctuations, ranging from 5% in some cities (Mexico) to 30% in Costa Rica. The risk of severe exacerbations seems to be higher in Latin America compared with other regions. A majority of patients uses daily quick-relief medication, with the belief that it is the most important treatment because of its rapid onset of action; without treating the underlying inflammation.
