Temperature is one of the most important factors in the life histories of ectotherms, as body temperature has an undeniable effect on growth, activity, and reproduction. Lizards have a wide variety of strategies to acquire and maintain body temperature in an optimal range. The "Thermal Melanism Hypothesis" proposes that individuals with lower skin reflectance can heat up faster as a result of absorbing more solar radiation compared to lighter conspecifics.

BioCholine Powder is a polyherbal feed additive composed of , , , and . The objective of this study was to analyze published results that support the hypothesis that the polyherbal product BioCholine Powder has rumen bypass choline metabolites through a meta-analysis and effect size analysis (ES). Using Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and university dissertation databases, a systematic search was conducted for experiments published in scientific documents that evaluated the effects of BioCholine supplementation on the variables of interest.

Electronic address:

In ectothermic animals, body temperature is the most important factor affecting physiology and behavior. Reptiles depend on environmental temperature to regulate their body temperature, so geographic variation in environmental temperature can affect the biology of these organisms in the short and long term. We may expect physiological and behavioral responses to temperature change to be especially important in ectotherms inhabiting temperate zones, where different seasons present different thermal challenges.

High altitude environments provide a fertile ground for investigating the benefits of phenotypic adjustments at several levels of biological organization. Low oxygen partial pressure and low environmental temperature are the main limiting factors that promote phenotypic variation in different organs, such as the lung and heart. Although high-altitude environments act like natural laboratories, most morphological studies conducted to date lack replication.

Ecogeographical patterns describe predictable variation in phenotypic traits between ecological communities. For example, high-altitude animals are expected to show elevated hematological values as an adaptation to the lower oxygen pressure. Mountains act like ecological islands and therefore are considered natural laboratories.

This essay is a reflection of the time and duration of the medical consultation, seen as a social process that is determined by macro structures following the productive logic and the demands of modern time. The length of the medical discussion is heterogeneous worldwide; in contrast, what is standard is the perception of the professionals and the patients that the time for interaction is short. Such a perception pervades the doctor-patient relationship, perpetuating a cycle of dissatisfaction-tension-anxiety in these actors.

  • This report marks the first identification of canine rotavirus in Mexico based on an analysis of 50 dog samples with gastroenteritis.
  • The study used advanced techniques like polymerase chain reaction to detect the presence of rotavirus and parvovirus.
  • Findings revealed that 7% of the dogs were solely infected with rotavirus, while 14% had both infections, with co-infected dogs showing more severe clinical symptoms.

The feeding-nutrition connection, three aspects for its understanding.

Medwave

April 2016

Departamento en Salud de la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Xochimilco, México.

Feeding is not an isolated concept; it is linked to biological, psychological, cultural, political and economic determinants. Physiologically the meeting of the biological need is very important, but when a group is subjected to a diet that only satisfies hunger and does not provide for nutrients, chronic deficient nutritional stages appear that impact social welfare and health. In this paper, we present three instances of nutritional problems that affect the Mexican population: child malnourishment, obesity and food security.

Canine transmissible venereal tumour (CTVT) has been transmitted by cell transplantation from dog to dog, for over 10 000 years. Although initial studies report a single genetic origin for CTVT, recent samples from around the world reveal high genetic diversity. An elevated number of polymorphisms have been determined in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of CTVT.

Violence in Mexico: A social or public health problem?

Medwave

March 2016

Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, Guatemala.

This article seeks to explain the importance of violence as a social phenomenon and public health, trying to envision this issue not only from a curative approach to health, but from the social determinants of health, such as economics, politics and the administration of justice. Here, the younger population lacks real opportunities with an “absent State” that fails to provide structure. These frameworks play a fundamental role in the manifestation of violence.

This essay attempts to bring on a new perspective for healthcare professionals regarding the problems that surround this institutionalized profession, based on a system of stock balances and not on the real needs of patients and their community. The healthcare professional not only engages in biomedical healing but also possesses knowledge and expertise regarding the dialectical process of health/disease. Thus, his or her practice and actions should be centered on social practices and not just the healing process.

The vulvovaginal region is a very complex area because of its anatomy and the fact that it can be source of a large number of benign tumors and less frequent malignant tumors. In recent decades, there have been significant gains in the diagnosis and treatment of vulvovaginal tumors, thanks to the contributions of cellular and molecular biology. The purpose of this review article is to serve as a practical reference for clinical and pathological diagnosis as well as in the outpatient treatment and monitoring of these benign tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors for Toxocara canis infection in children aged 2-16, using questionnaires and ELISA tests to detect antibodies.
  • Results showed higher seroprevalence in males (28.84%) compared to females (16.07%), with owning dogs under one year old identified as a significant risk factor (OR = 1.78).
  • Although not statistically significant, factors like poor hygiene, malnutrition, and outdoor activities were suggested as potential risks, emphasizing the importance of pet deworming and hygiene to prevent infection.
