Article Synopsis
  • People with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are overly fixated on perceived flaws in their appearance, often seeing themselves as ugly or disfigured despite others not noticing any real defects.
  • This relentless preoccupation leads them to scrutinize their appearance, which only worsens their self-image and feelings of unattractiveness.
  • Individuals with BDD often seek help from dermatologists or plastic surgeons, believing that these external changes can achieve an ideal beauty that remains unreachable due to their distorted self-perception.

[Alopecia areata].

Hautarzt

November 2013

Univ.-Hautklinik Aachen, RWTH Aachen, Pauwelsstr. 30, 52074, Aachen, Deutschland.

The epidemiology of alopecia areata as well as murine models of this disease and genome-wide association studies support the concept of alopecia areata as an autoimmune disease. In addition, the genome-wide association studies have led to the identification of new potential therapeutic targets such as CTLA4; these results have already led to the initiation of clinical studies, for example, with abatacept. Currently topical and intralesional corticosteroids as well as immunotherapy with diphenylcyclopropenone are most common therapeutic approaches.

[Genetics of contact allergy].

Hautarzt

October 2011

Zentrale des IVDK, Univ.-Hautklinik Göttingen, Universitätsmedizin Göttingen.

The genetics of contact allergy (CA) is still only partly understood, despite decades of research. This might be due to inadequately defined phenotypes used in the past. Therefore we suggested studying an extreme phenotype, namely, polysensitization (sensitization to 3 or more unrelated allergens).

The skin is very often the target organ of allergic reactions. This may be explained by many immunological competent cells in this organ such as the Langerhans cell, mast cells, lymphocytes, neutrophils and eosinophils. This is especially true for the antigen-presenting Langerhans cell.
