The purpose of this study was to test the hypotheses that digital infrared thermographic imaging (DITI) during simulated uncontrolled hemorrhage will reveal 1) respiratory rate and 2) changes of skin temperature that track reductions of stroke volume. In 45 healthy volunteers (25 men and 20 women), we recorded the ECG, finger photoplethysmographic arterial pressure, respiratory rate (pneumobelt and DITI of the nose), cardiac output (inert rebreathing), and skin temperature of the forehead during lower body negative pressure (LBNP) at three continuous decompression rates; slow (-3 mmHg/min), medium (-6 mmHg/min), and fast (-12 mmHg/min) to an ending pressure of -60 mmHg. The release of trace metals (Mn, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd) and inorganic compounds (As) from initially anoxic Trepangier Bayou sediments, Louisiana and the sources of the released metals were investigated. After 1 to 2 d aeration, significant amounts of trace metals (Mn, Zn, Cd, Ni, and Co) were released to the aqueous phase with increased acidity, primarily due to the oxidation of acid-volatile sulfide and ferrous iron and iron sulfide minerals. The addition of a bacterial inhibitor, NaN,, to the Trepangier sediment during resuspension inhibited metal release, suggesting that microbial catalysis can regulate metal mobilization during sediment resuspension.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that exacerbated reductions of cerebral blood velocity (CBV) during upright tilt with dehydration are associated with impaired cerebrovascular control. Nine healthy men were tilted head-up (HUT) to 70° for 10 min on two occasions separated by 7 days under euhydration (EUH) and dehydration (DEH; 40 mg of furosemide and water restriction) conditions. Beat-by-beat arterial pressures and CBV were measured during a 5-min supine baseline and during the first (T1) and last (T2) 5 min of HUT.

A Comparison of Methods for Determining Optical Properties of Thin Samples.

The near-infrared (NIR) optical properties of human retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells and rare earth nanopowders were studied using a double-integrating sphere setup. The Kubelka-Munk and Inverse Adding-Doubling techniques were applied to obtain absorption and scattering coefficients. These are compared with the coefficients obtained through the Representative Layer Theory described by the Dahm equation.
