Water retention curves are essential for understanding the hydrologic behavior of partially saturated porous media and modeling flow and transport processes within the vadose zone. We directly measured the main drying and wetting branches of the average water retention function obtained using two-dimensional neutron radiography. Flint sand columns were saturated with water and then drained and rewetted under quasi-equilibrium conditions using a hanging water column setup.

The use of neutron imaging is demonstrated for visualizing and quantifying water distribution in partially saturated granular porous media. Because of the unique difference in the total neutron cross sections of water, sand, and air, a significant contrast for the three phases is observed in a neutron transmission image, and a quantitative analysis provides detailed information on the arrangement and distribution of particles, voids, and water. The experiments in this study are performed at the Neutron Imaging Facility (NIF) at the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST).

We investigated the contribution of cytochrome P-450 1B1 (CYP1B1) to renal dysfunction and organ damage associated with ANG II-induced hypertension in rats. ANG II (300 ng·kg(-1)·min(-1)) or vehicle were infused for 2 wk, with daily injections of a selective CYP1B1 inhibitor, 2,4,3',5'-tetramethoxystilbene (TMS; 300 μg/kg ip), or its vehicle. ANG II increased blood pressure and renal CYP1B1 activity that were prevented by TMS.

Skin expresses all elements of the HPA axis including corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), proopiomelanocortin (POMC), ACTH, β-endorphin (β-END) with corresponding receptors, the glucocorticoidogenic pathway, and the glucocorticoid receptor (GR). We have studied apoptosis of gastrointestinal epithelial cells by examining the receptor-mediated and DNA damage-induced pathways using TNF-α and camptothecin (CPT), respectively. TNF-α requires inhibition of antiapoptotic protein synthesis by cycloheximide (CHX). CHX also results in high levels of active JNK, which are necessary for TNF-induced apoptosis.

20-hydroxyvitamin D(2) [20(OH)D(2)] inhibits DNA synthesis in epidermal keratinocytes, melanocytes, and melanoma cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. This inhibition is dependent on cell type, with keratinocytes and melanoma cells being more sensitive than normal melanocytes. The antiproliferative activity of 20(OH)D(2) is similar to that of 1,25(OH)(2)D(3) and of newly synthesized 1,20(OH)(2)D(2) but significantly higher than that of 25(OH)D(3).

JNK is a nonreceptor kinase involved in the early events that signal cell migration after injury. However, the linkage to early signals required to initiate the migration response to JNK has not been defined in airway epithelial cells, which exist in an environment subjected to cyclic mechanical strain (MS). The present studies demonstrate that the JNK/stress-activated protein kinase-associated protein 1 (JSAP1; also termed JNK-interacting protein 3, JIP3), a scaffold factor for MAPK cascades that links JNK activation to focal adhesion kinase (FAK), are both associated and activated following mechanical injury in 16HBE14o- human airway epithelial cells and that both FAK and JIP3 phosphorylation seen after injury are decreased in cells subjected to cyclic MS.

We sought to assess readability and layout characteristics of state-issued Medicaid enrollment applications. We attempted to locate Internet-based Medicaid enrollment applications from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Readability of each Medicaid enrollment application "Signature" page was calculated using McLaughlin's Simplified Measure of Gobbledygoop formula, while layout characteristics were assessed utilizing criteria included in the User-Friendliness Tool.

Association of triclosan to casein proteins through solvent-mediated high-pressure homogenization.

The association of triclosan (TCS), a widely used hydrophobic compound, to the bovine casein micelle is investigated in this study. The use of high-pressure homogenization (HPH) at 0, 100, 200, and 300 MPa was introduced as a method for the dissociation of casein micelles in a skim milk/ethanol solution (1: 1, v/v) in the presence of TCS at 20, 80, and 160 mg/L where ethanol evaporation served as the final step for TCS association to caseins. The majority of TCS (over 80%) was associated with the caseins regardless of initial TCS concentration or applied pressure.
