The current paper implements a methodology for automatically detecting vehicle maneuvers from vehicle telemetry data under naturalistic driving settings. Previous approaches have treated vehicle maneuver detection as a classification problem, although both time series segmentation and classification are required since input telemetry data are continuous. Our objective is to develop an end-to-end pipeline for the frame-by-frame annotation of naturalistic driving studies videos into various driving events including stop and lane-keeping events, lane changes, left-right turning movements, and horizontal curve maneuvers.

Reprogramming somatic cells to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) eliminates many epigenetic modifications that characterize differentiated cells. In this study, we tested whether functional differences between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and non-COPD fibroblasts could be reduced utilizing this approach. Training in intercultural competency for health care professionals is necessary to bring greater balance to the disparity currently found among those needing health care. The purpose of this study was to determine what, if any, improvements in cultural competency were measurable in physician assistant (PA) students as they matriculated, using the Multicultural Awareness, Knowledge and Skills Survey-Revised as a pretest upon program entry and again as a posttest on the final day of the program. Ninety-three PA students from four successive classes graduating from a private midwest college between 2003 and 2007 participated in the pre and post measurements.

An exaggerated exercise pressor reflex (EPR) contributes to exercise intolerance and excessive sympathoexcitation in the chronic heart failure (CHF) state, which is prevented by exercise training (ExT) at an early stage in the development of CHF. We hypothesized that ExT has a beneficial effect on the exaggerated EPR by improving the dysfunction of muscle afferents in CHF. We recorded the discharge of mechanically sensitive (group III) and metabolically sensitive (group IV) afferents in response to static contraction, passive stretch, and hindlimb intra-arterial injection of capsaicin in sham+sedentary (Sed), sham+ExT, CHF+Sed, and CHF+ExT rats.

The paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus is involved in the neural control of sympathetic drive, but the precise mechanism(s) that influences the PVN is not known. The activation of the PVN may be influenced by input from higher forebrain areas, such as the median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) and the subfornical organ (SFO). We hypothesized that activation of the MnPO or SFO would drive the PVN through a glutamatergic pathway.

The multifunctional cytoprotective protein peroxiredoxin 6 (Prdx6) maintains cellular homeostasis and membrane integrity by regulating expression of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and phospholipid turnover. Using cells derived from targeted inactivation of Prdx6 gene or its depletion by RNA interference or aging, we showed that Prdx6 deficiency in cells evoked unfolded protein response (UPR), evidenced by increased expression or activation of proapoptotic factors, CHOP, ATF4, PERK, IRE-α and eIF2-α and by increased caspases 3 and 12 processing. Those cells displayed enhanced and sustained expression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related chaperon proteins, Bip/glucose-regulated protein 78, calnexin, and calreticulin.

Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain 2 (NOD2) is involved in innate immune responses to peptidoglycan degradation products. Peptidoglycans are important mediators of organic dust-induced airway diseases in exposed agriculture workers; however, the role of NOD2 in response to complex organic dust is unknown. Elevated central angiotensin II (ANG II) plays a critical role in the sympathoexcitation of chronic heart failure (CHF) by stimulating upregulated ANG II type 1 receptors (AT(1)R) in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). However, the link between enhanced ANG II signaling and alterations in the electrophysiological characteristics of neurons in the RVLM remains unclear. Peripheral chemoreflex sensitivity is enhanced in both clinical and experimental chronic heart failure (CHF). Here we investigated the role of manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), the SOD isoform specially targeted to mitochondria, and mitochondrial superoxide levels in the enhanced chemoreceptor activity and function of the carotid body (CB) in CHF rabbits. CHF suppressed MnSOD protein expression and elevated mitochondrial superoxide levels in CB compared with that in sham CB.

Glomerular hyperfiltration and mesangial expansion have been described in mouse models of a hyperinsulinemic early stage of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Large-conductance Ca(2+)-activated K(+) channels (BK) have been linked to relaxation of human mesangial cells (MC) and may contribute to MC expansion and hyperfiltration. Chronic heart failure (CHF) is well known to be associated with both an enhanced chemoreceptor reflex and an augmented cardiac "sympathetic afferent reflex" (CSAR). The augmentation of the CSAR may play an important role in the enhanced chemoreceptor reflex in the CHF state because the same central areas are involved in the sympathetic outputs of both reflexes. Horizontal cell (HC) to cone feedback helps establish the center-surround arrangement of visual receptive fields. It has been shown that HC activity influences cone synaptic output by altering the amplitude and voltage dependence of the calcium current (ICa) in cones. The time course of changes in mitochondrial respiration, alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase activity, and inner membrane proton permeability and the effects of protein synthesis inhibition was determined in hypothyroid rats treated with triiodothyronine. Respiratory rates, alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase activity and proton permeability were decreased in hypothyroid rats and rose to euthyroid levels 9-12 hours after triiodothyronine treatment.
